New Logo Design - Help needed please?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have made a decision to change the name of my web design ework. As part of the rebranding I am currently re-designing my logo for my web design portfolio.

I have put together a few ideas so far and would like some feedback. None of these designs are final just generating some ideas so far.

I'm not a fan of any of them. The fonts you've used look amateur i'm afraid.

Have a read of this, it may help you somewhat http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/11/04/best-practices-of-combining-typefaces/. You don't necessarily need two typefaces either, you could use two different weights.

Out of the three you have pictured, I prefer the second one overall. It has a nice feel to it.. I do agree with the above poster in that you may want to look at being consistent with the font, they just don't have to be the exact same size. I will keep an eye out for any future updates.

I'm with Jack in terms of fonts. Two is the strongest of the three, but it looks like you have stretched the font for 'design'. If so, that is a big no-no in my book and many other type fans. Apologies if you haven't altered it, but the font is a little too wide.

The second design has potential to build upon though. Try a few other fonts (Font Squirrel is a great free resource for offline fonts) and play around with your tracking and line height a bit. Just my preference, but adding a little more padding to the black border or perhaps removing it all together and letting the font 'bleed' into itself might be worth a play.

Another thing, have a think about the name 'Mogwai' and choose a font suitable for it. It sounds playful or a little deviant (in terms of the Gremlins reference) or perhaps a little more subtle and laid back - as in the band Mogwai. I don't know what the word means to you but toy with it a little and you might come up with something totally different. Whether you think you can draw or not, sketch it all out on some paper and don't self censor.

Good luck - hope this helps :)

The reason behind the name Mogwai is because of the gremlins as i have the nickname of gizmo so its something i thought would good for my web design work, just looked at the gremlins font but not liking it that much.

I am rubbish when it comes to fonts any advice about particular fonts i could try would be much appreciated.

I would say that you need more of everything

More drawing of designs

More font choices

More research into the name

More idea on who you are designing this for.. Your audience

More meaning to the logo

More colour experimentation

Although they don't look bad style wise ( I also agree about the font choices ) what exactly do they mean?

Why have you put the word Mogwai above design instead of next to it for example?

Why are you highlighting the word design?

Would there be a reason for making one word bigger than the other?

If a logo does not have meaning it's pointless as a logo and if it's pointless you are just as well off having no logo especially if I have no reason to remember you later.

In respects to fonts, try places like this for inspiration and ideas http://creativenerds.co.uk/freebies/logo-fonts/ as well as logo websites

As for your pixelation, make sure you are creating a large enough logo for what you want to use them for, also check the dpi you are using.. 75 dpi for web.. 300 dpi for print - lastly it would not use save for web in Photoshop, the idea of save for web is a good one for most things but you want your logo to be clear, I would save it normally as save for web compresses it and sometimes causes pixelation.. Those are a few things you can check, if on the other hand you are just worried about the preview on this forum, don't worry about it looking pixilated on here, the forum software just reduces the preview quality before you click in order to save load time of the page

Thanks Fuzzy Logic for your feedback it is much appreciated, i will go back to the drawing board taking into account what you have pointed out to me, i also appreciate your guidance about pix-elation i will experiment with this advice. I will be looking for additional feedback on designs

I have had a think about what i want the logo to portray and that is friendly and that reflects the service which the client will receive from me. I also done a bit of research into different typefaces / fonts which would help me establish this message. I also added subtle colors which I would be using for the overall design of my portfolio website and have chosen a color which is personal to me as it is my favorite color.

I have used a color scheming website for ideas of the colors which would work well together as I feel that getting the color combination right from the offset would enable me to reflect this is the rest of the design.

I have come up with a completely different logo design and would appreciate feedback. Sorry if i have missed some of people's feedback but i am sure if i have missed some feedback i will be looking back at this thread to make sure i have taken on board all that has been presented here.

To be honest I think it looks much better, there is a definite improvement of character, I like where its going.. you could leave it at that but I would carry on trying new things. well done

I would like to add more depth to the logo but i just do not know what to do to make it something which would be my brand rather than just a typographic logo, I thought of having a gremlin outline as that was where i got the name from but as its a trademark that is out of the question.

Could you suggest anything which I should consider doing to improve this logo even further? Any help is much appreciated :-)

A logo is not a brand, a logo makes up part of a brand, a brand is the whole look, feel, emotional response to your business through colour, style and form.

For a graphic I cannot just pluck one out of the air, but I can give you a heading

Go and find out what is a Mogwai, is it really a furry friend or just well packaged mischief?

How aod you describe one, is it soft? Cute? For example, try to convey these feelings through your typography, a soft rounded font paired with something harsher. As for a graphic, look at the creatures features, both physically and emotionally then just draw and keep drawing until you get an idea, then draw some more and choose the best ones, then develop those and pick the best.

This is a process, not something that is done in a day.. Brief > research > concept > design > develop > make

Thanks for the feedback and guidance, i am off to my day job now but when I get back i will be thinking about the process and also going back over this thread and formulating a brief but once again thanks for your input! I will be updating you soon for feedback again if thats ok?

There's a band called Mogwai, they chose the name for the same reason, although they have never used any Gremlin references in their logo or artwork. Their artwork is actually pretty damn nice and it's an example how it could be approached.
