Bounce rate is the % of 1 hit wonders who visit your site and leave straight away. What a lot of search engines use this information for is to determine if the keyword used to visit your site is accurate, the higher the bounce rate of a particular search term shows the search engine that your site is less relevant than a similar site with a lower bounce rate. I think they just add this to their ranking algorithm pot and give it a stir.

The best way to describe bounce rate is the percentage of your visitors that only view one page and then exit your site.

Overall there a few important factors that will end up contributing to your overall bounce rate.

1. Visitors may leave your site if there are usability or design issues.

2. Visitors may only need the one page they visited to get the information they need and not need other pages.

3. A single page site can cause high bounce rates because Google Analytics will not track multiple page views unless your visitors reload the entire page.

4.The tracking code may not be implemented correctly on all pages.

5. The design of your landing pages could be making the user navigate away and you might need to redesign the pages.

6. A user may just bookmark your page and leave and this will be classed as a bounce.

Bounce rate of a site plays a very important role for a site. Because for the bounce rate you can calculate your site important and how many visitor likes your site. In alternatively its help your sales or your business also.

Disagree with the above.

Bounce rate can be massively overrated when taken out of context, case in point we have a client with a super low bounce of sub 25% but they don't shift half as much stock as our other client with a 60-65% bounce rate. Why? The low bounce rate site sells big-ticket aspirational items, this of course attracts a lot of window shoppers.

Just an example, there are millions more out there and plenty of businesses running at a profit with 'high' bounce.

B/R < > context

When it comes to SERPs as MrBugs says, it's just one of hundreds of algo rules that dictate the SERPs.

Bingo! If however you couple a high bounce rate with a very low visit duration I think this is where the search engines 'could' imply that the site content is not what the user was looking for. But it's really splitting one hair on a hippies head.

Another issue with BR is the fact it doesn't (in GA at least) account for time on that single page.

We've another analytics tool that show visit duration, of those that bounce the majority spend at least a minute on our site's page. Yet GA calls them ALL bounces, which isn't a fair assessment.

Is the other tool a pre-built or a custom one by you? I'm interested in being able to determine which are high bounce low duration pages on a project of mine as it speaks volumes about the content of pages matching this criteria.

It's another third-party tool for tracking leads (businesses) that visit the site, I believe it uses java to 'count' the time on site i.e. mouse movement and scrolls. It tracks up to the last sign of life and reports it.

We were looking (and still might) to implement something like this -

Te very definition of a bounce is someone who lands on one page and then leaves. So you can't say that someone that only views one page but stays on there for an hour isn't a bounce. Because it is.

Create a custom segment using a condition that looks at page views of less than 2. This way, you can then segment the visitor information right there in GA. You can go as far as creating multiple segments for individual traffic sources and view any trends that might occur across multiple sources.

I'd then use custom variables (dimensions in UA) on pages to determine which bit of content led to a conversion (for articles), whether those that share content are likely to convert, on ecom stores to map the patterns of returning customers (a CV that looks at those that have purchased more than 3 times and look at that data).

In google adwords, the analytic tools do track the average duration of visits to each page regardless of whether it was a bounce or not. I don't know if there is anyway to see the stats that have been used to calculate the averages though.

If your bounce rate is 70% out of 100% then your website don't have real visitors. Always try to reduce the bounce rate of your website. Bounce rate show how much time a visitors stay on our website. So it is most important factor in SEO and if bounce rate is not good then you could have good traffic but less business sales.

The percentage of visitors who enter the website and then without viewing the other page of same website is called as bounce rate

Bounce rate play a big role now in the days. Google check the time of engagment means, people send how mutch time on your website. Are they interested or not, if not then they left your website with in few seconds and as your bounce rate will increase. As Google conclude that, the information for which people looking for is not on your website and it start to decrease your ranking. So don't take it easily.

A high bounce rate is a very good indication that you need to rework that page or even the whole site if they are entering and leaving through most same pages on your site.
