For a website designer, are links to forums (or the lack thereof) such as this one harmful to seo and / or reputation? In other words, is it good, bad, or indifferent to have a link to my site (or not have one) as part of my profile here? Just curious.

Well it shouldn't make a difference from an SEO point of view as all links are nofollow links on this forum, so most if not all search engines generally don't add any value to such links. However you may get a mild boost if people decide to follow the link to see your content.

Just because a link is no follow doesn't mean google wont index it (if the right keyword is implemented) and list it in GWT right?

Google will still index your page if you put a (no-follow) attribute on the page.

A (no-follow) is just a signal that you do not trust the pages that you are linking to and no PageRank will be passed. Please note PageRank will not be around forever and Page Authority & Domain Authority is taking over, so in theory the (no-follow) tag will add some credit from trusted sites.

I think PageRank of some description will always be around so long as Google is. Moz Rank, Alexa Rank ... these are all just individual ranks based on their own metrics.

I think Forums sites are helpful for indexing you sites and it helps to increase Organic saerch

I agree that no third party metrics including (Domain Authority, Page Authority, MozRank, MozTrust ) can replace the PageRank. These are just a company's own metrics, but it does give a good insight into the overall link profile of a site.

The PageRank is not updated often anymore and even Matt Cutt's has said this. I just feel something else is on its way to replace it.

I think the (Domain Authority, Page Authority) is a good metrics to use, while Google are deciding what to do, with PageRank. As we know Matt Cutt's said there was not going to be a PageRank update this year and we saw one on December 6th.

I think if we see something updating less and less we can only assume it is on its way out.

are you sure that PR updated on daily basis ,,, please share some thing related...

Long story short, if you take part of a forum and you get 800 signature links from them, no problem. Conversely, if you sign up in 1562 forums with a software and just get one link from each of them, that's web spam and may lead to penalization.

It will be no-follow, but can't hurt.

Don't ask me for an exact link to the page but a while ago when reading up on link building in googles acres of help pages I came across an article by them in which they stated that -

 

'The actual content of the article or thread in which the link appears will directly affect how google rates that link', or words to that effect. They then went on to explain that if a link is used in a members signature and appears every time they create a new post, thread, or reply then it will be likely to often appear in pages where the relevance is considered low and thus the link will be effected in general.

 

I took this to mean that re-using the same link as part of your signature, or placing links within post's that are not in "googles eye's" totally relevant will be discounted at best within a short period. So I use no such links and make a point of trying to keep mine as relevant as possible at all times.

I always link my site because if I'm on here, I'm looking for advice. and how can I get advice if I don't link my work? So, that's why i'll put a link to my site. but I have no idea if that counts as a backlink or not. can't hurt!

Well relevency matters alot these days. Avoid having links from forum signature as its not possbile that every post relate to your business. and google does not like excessive singature links.. All forums now has no follow link policy that makes it useless for you get links.
