Link building is much easier these days because google is putting a lot more focus on other factors. Unless you want to rank for Viagra or car insurance, you don't need as many links as you think you might.
 
Get in touch with websites and see if you can write content for them. Guest blogging can be extremely powerful if you do it write. Big content with a lot of information will work wonders.
 
Footer links are still powerful. I work with a lot of large scale design companies that rank purely because of these footer links. If you have a pool of 2-300 clients that you can dip into you can rank for anything pretty much. Make it natural.
 
Set up a content plan. Write one article a week and one big article per month and push it out to influencers on social media. Email people within the industry and ask them what they think. They might link to it, or push it out to their people.
 
I think you really need to look at your link building plan if you still use blog comments though!
 
It's more about marketing a website now then it is actually going out to a directory and thinking "it looks **** but I can get a link".

The reason web design niches are incredibly difficult to rank in (for anything half decent) are because they have 100's of unique domains with links pointing back to them. You're right in that a link on a web design site is going to better. So if you can't rank a website despite having access to 100's of websites where you can change the anchor text in a matter of minutes, you're doing something wrong!
 
Look at the guys ranking for ecommerce web design. The reason for that is because they switched over a number of anchors to say "ecommerce web design" and look where they rank....

Just do a site: search in Google to see if they've been deindexed

Internal page rank updates daily. Thats the thing they use to give a website a value. Externally viewable pr was last updated a year ago, ish.
 
Google stopped updating it so often because web owners became fixated with it.

Unfortunately you're going to be in for a very tough ride. Theres nothing wrong with targeting high end keywords like "Adult Toys" but if it was easy, we'd ALL be doing it.
 
Anything in the adult niche is pretty diluted as it's a huge, profitable business. In order to get your website ranking you need full onsite optimisation as well as HIGH QUALITY links. Nothing that is spammy, no link packages or anything like that.
 
Without hiring a professional or spending the next year learning online marketing, it's going to take time.
 
However, all is not lost. Work on social media websites and look at marketing your business offline. You won't get many people sharing your pages or pictures but it's a free source of traffic and you can certainly get solid traffic from it.
 
I could spend the next hour here walking you through the basics but I think that time would be wasted because there are websites out there that already do that. Have a look at:

Exact match domains used to be powerful. Google would yse the domain name to determine the brand name for the overall website. It meant that it would stop people put ranking nike for the keyword "nike" etc.
 
With that in mind, Google gives weight to any keywords that are in the domain. So if you have "touring van hire" in your domain, youd be given a little more weight than a generic domain.
 
You have to be careful here because google have actually been playing around with emd's just lately. They dialled them back and now it seems theyre back rankong how they used to. Bear that in mind.
 
Having said that, so long as your have thick quality content on your website and a powerful set of backli ks, you wont come into to much of a problem. Why? Because if your links are strong enough then any emd devalution will just be a blip.
 
It also means your can build quite a few more exact keyword anchors. If someone linked naturally to your website they would most likely use yor brand name. In this case, your brand name is the domain. So if the majority of your li ks were touring van hire then its not as unnatural if 90% of your keyword rich anchors pointed to a generic domain.
 
With regards to forwarding, make sure its a 301 redirect as that passes all link juice. Then that way any links to the generic domain are passed on.
 
Good question about which domaon to link to. Primarily the main domaon but a few to the generic domain wont hurt.

^ that. I can vouch for that! Set up a website, and I'm not talking about a few interlinking pages, and making it water tight can yield some amazing results in terms of traffic. You just have to know your stuff. I think people assume that on page is just about the content and adding h1 tags. BRowserBugs on site work is unrivalled and I've seen some impressive traffic

However, it could be anything. Thin content, bad links, Google has found you're linking all your websites togehter etc. I would suggest Google has found out your websites are linked together, along with bad content and a very thin backlink profile (just guessing) your websites have bombed

PageRank doesn't change very often. Infact, it hasn't changed since the beginning of the year. Alexa Rank? I've never, ever, in my entire life, used Alexa rank to determine how well a web site is.

Anything that is related to your business with a good quality link profile and high quality links pointing into them. There are millions of web design blogs out there that are willing to take guest posts.

Hummingbird has no affect on how websites rank or how Google looks at it ranking. Hummingbird focuses purely on providing search results based upon more semantic search terms. The knowledge Graph is a way of displaying such data; search for an actor and you get information scraped from websites about them.
 
MAny think it's a way for Google to keep the user on their website much longer. As cynical as it sounds, I don't think thats the case. It's providing more information to the user straight away. Hummingbird takes a complex search query that has a definate answer; how tall is the eiffel tower, cupcakes vs bagels. This sort of stuff means someone is looking for an answer and Google assumes they don't want to crawl through websites.
 
PageRank will never die. It's updated internally on a near-daily basis. However, external PageRank might be something different. I've never really trusted it as it's only updated once in a blue moon (externally). It can be seen as another shot at SEOs (such as my self) where data is being taken away from us.
 
Page Rank will be adopted, changed and updated over time. As you said, it's the fundamentals behind how a website ranks.
 
But because of it's ****ty timescale in updating, there are a lot more ways to determine just how useful a website is. PageRank and DA/PA can be manipulated incredibly easy. CEMPER Trust Flow etc are more useful.
 
But, to the average user and website owner, PR is a massive thing. I hope it stays around, but they need to look at updating it more regular or not at all.

Thats like saying whats the point in advertising in the paper, or whats the point in having a listing on freeindex.com? The point is about spreading visibility. It's the same as every other directory out there, but Neils is quality, not spammed. Yes, he advertises that its a PR6 (redundant this day and age but still a solid factor to look at) which people use to build links from. But with the right bit of work, he could get it ranking for web design company. That attracts a huge amounbt of searches, the people from that could then use his directory to find what they are looking for.

I don't have any qualifications but I have experience. Also, rank your website. I top the search engines for 10-20 different keywords and 90% of my clients always say that they chose me because I'm top.
 
Also, I have facts and figures to back up what I do. One company, I made them £1mill+ per year. Another company I increased their turnover by 75%. Another company I managed to get them ranking for a keyword with 45k+ exact searches per month.
 
Its more than just reading a book. I live and breathe it, I test websites, I push website to the limits, push domains into algo holes and generally test and refine my skills. I also make sure my clients make money.
 
I don't charge 5k a month minimum, like Bronco or Distilled, but I have clients that pay me alot of money because I make them a lot of money

I've not got youtube experience, in all fairness. Ive ranked videos but beyond that, my skills are limited. Are you looking at creating authorship between Youtube and Google plus? I imagine adding a contributor link from G+ to your user page would help?

Don't hoard pr. only use no follow when linking to questionable links, a few internal links or something like verisign (my preference as if I'm paying for something they sure as **** ain't getting a link from it). No following social media could be bad, as you're stopping google from making that social connection between your website and social accounts. If that makes sense? Don't fret over it so much to be honest.
