Hello All,

 

I'm a new designer in need of some hardware advice.

 

I am a PC user looking for some advice regarding a new Monitor. I have a budget of between £100 - £150, due to unemployment, and I'm looking to replace my old ACER AL1916W (good old work horse, but not fit for purpose).

 

I've read some chatter about the AOC i2353fh, but any advice / recommendations would be really appreciated.

In our web development office we have Dell U2312HM's. They are absolutely fantastic monitors and you can get them for about £165. Elsewhere in the company we have some HP 23" screens (because they were £65 on ebay!!) but the Dell's are so much better.

I have an Asus screen i'm darn happy with: Asus VE278Q

I'm rolling with a 23" Samsung SyncMaster SA350H which was £115 from amazon (currently around £150). The colours and clarity are great and the magic angle is a nice touch. I use my rig for gaming (when bored) and it's stunning. I will have to say I've become a Samsung fan as their screens are fantastic value and outstanding quality. My last was SyncMaster 740 BF (2ms) which is still used as a family pc screen (7 years old ish?).

This. The Dells are IPS panels, which will have much better colour reproduction when properly calibrated.

Dell are (oddly?) very good at producing rather high quality monitors for a good price - the P series ones certainly remain a favourite of mine!

They're well built, produce a nice bright and crisp image, and importantly if you're spending hours on end staring at them, the stands are height adjustable.

Alternatively, if you're wanting to go a little more "up market", you can't go wrong with Eizo. There's a reason why many NHS / medical organisations use monitors made by Eizo in their PACS systems.

Either way, a good color calibration tool is also a worthwhile investment for anyone doing design work, regardless of what type of monitor you choose.

Eizo? Oh god yes. I've craved the CG301W since it first came out, but their current range only goes up to 27". That makes me a sad panda.

If they don't do a size big enough, I'd see that as en excuse to have multiple monitors

I'm making do with a pair of 24" at the moment: a Dell 2407WFP and 2408WFP. Really love them.

Yea - the old "Y" shaped ones were much better! Never been too sure why they changed them, as the new ones surely use more raw materials to produce too!

 

Still, the new ones are still better than many other vendors offer - there really are some nasty designs out there that can ruin the overall quality of an otherwise good piece of kit.

I know - makes absolutely no sense. I also don't like the way their new laptop designs are so close to Apple's, when they made a gorgeous distinctively-designed laptop once upon a time that I'm still using, but they cancelled it after a couple of models. Bit off-topic, but it's a similar stupid decision.
