Okay guys there is some excellent advice in there, I seriously appreciate it! Sounds like I should get onto the treehouse programme for a bit as well as loads of practice in my own time and then see where that takes me. Honestly can't thank you all enough for the help, so hard to believe there is a forum with no trolls! Will keep you all posted on how this works out for me, it might help some other people out down the line.

Thanks for the reply! I forgot to mention that im from the UK, would treehouse still be suitable? Or is there an equivalent over here? I get what you mean about w3schools some of their stuff didn't seem right at all, im quite happy to pay for a good course its just so difficult to know the best ones, CIW cert seems to get a good bit of praise but then I have never seen it in a job advert

Hi everybody, I am looking for a bit of advice if possible regarding a route into web design. I am 32 and work full time as a lorry driver but have always had a keen interest in computers and particularly programming, I have been through courses on the likes of codeacademy and w3schools and really enjoyed them, although I do feel as if I need a whole tonne of practice. Anyway, I was wondering what advice there would be as to my next step? I have looked at doing university courses and various other so called approved certifications but when I read job adverts these are rarely mentioned, its mainly 2 years exp and maybe a computer related degree. I have read here that just building a portfolio is a good start, but again where would I get work to start me off, even voluntary work. One more thing, I really enjoy web design but there seems to be a lot more work for developers, would that be a better choice? Thanks for any help offered, sorry for throwing so many questions out there it just seems a bit of a minefield.
