August 24, 201213 yr New to site. OK so im looking to have a website built working with a developer, i dont have the funds, and not even going to bother with the bank, if people with millions of pounds cannot get loans why would they give me the money i need. Anyway, this is not some pipe dream ive put together late one night, i have 16 years in my industry, a business plan, and customer waiting, Looking at the web i have seen the scorn poured on others for asking about JV but then most deserve it if they have not put in the leg work. So in short how can i take this forward? , no experience with web dev, all i can tell you is the site will need to be able tosearch and filter as the customer makes their choices, its a B2B website btw. Happy to discuss in more detail ofcourse. advice and options very welcome. Michael
August 24, 201213 yr OK so im looking to have a website built working with a developer, i dont have the funds, and not even going to bother with the bank, if people with millions of pounds cannot get loans why would they give me the money i need. This is a BS spread by people whose ideas where not good enough to get loans. I know plenty of people who have got business loans because their business and ideas were spot on. Draw up a business plan, go to investors and source the finances to pay for the job to be done. This is the only way the job will be done to the quality that will be needed to get money back in the long run. No budget = no work
August 24, 201213 yr Author none to very little. this is my point, i even know clients are waiting the other end, Robbie thanks for making my point. As i said this is a case of plan together, forecast toegther, business xperience, customers waiting, but no funds this end, i would be offering, a % of the business, and would even say that the first customers on board will go directly to the web developer based on what it would have cost plus a %. Would appreciate less of the cocky and some genuine thoughts and ideas, this is a serious business case, not a fly by night idea hatched on the back of something that has recenlty been in the news etc. I know my industry i know the buyers.
August 24, 201213 yr Author No Mike not BS at all. I know companies in that very position with decent profits for years, they money was to expand not to cover any fall in revenue, they still said no. its a joke. But its clear im wasting my time here i think, im not looking for a free run, id ve doing most of the work o nthe business
August 24, 201213 yr Genuine thoughts and ideas: you may know your industry. We likely don't even know enough about your industry to tell if you're genuinely experienced and knowledgeable or a chancer. We're not venture capitalists; we're web designers and developers, and we all have bills to pay. Since it's out of our field, we'd have to pay someone to assess the viability of your ideas before we even thought about getting involved. That's us out of pocket before we've even determined if you have a chance of success. Assuming you do have a chance of success, and I want to get involved - let's say I decide to spend 20 hours a week on your project. That's my normal income halved, in exchange for a chance of a big payout - it's still not guaranteed. I have bills to pay, and I can't pay them with equity. That's what you're asking us to do. That's what a lot of people ask us to do, so it's understandable that we're a bit jaded about it and unwilling to invest (in terms of our time and lost income) in something, especially where professional investors have passed. August 24, 201213 yr You see this kind of thing the whole time, "help me with this website and I'll give you 10% of the profits, and my FY1 projection is £14,000,000" I might be tempted to do work in return, but I'd want to know a lot more about the person and business involved. And snobbish/elitist as it may sound, the first thing that screams "SCAM!" is poor spelling, punctuation and grammar. And no, dyslexia does not prevent the use of a spellchecker, as a dyslexic friend of mine likes to point out.
August 24, 201213 yr Author Appreicate your honesty Mod. Was looking to work directly with a web dev rather than get funded by VC but this may be the way to go, i think i was hoping for a young hungry web dev to want to get involved but didnt look at it from that point of view. Im very much a person that wants to get things done so headed straight for this forum, a step back is probably whats needed, regards my experience that can be proved easily. thanks for your comments
August 24, 201213 yr Author T-G no FY1 figures like that im afraid lol. Regards spelling, its late friday, its my only excuse. and its no scam. Id provide full plan, my backround, my experience, USP's etc. would not expect anyone to take a punt with literally no info, but i would not put on forum either, have an NDA set up already when discussing with any parties.
August 24, 201213 yr Lets look at this from another angle. Say your buisness was a physical high street shop. You would need to fit out the shop to meet your needs. Would you ask the shop fitter to do the work but only pay the guy his money if the shop is a success. It would never happen. As has been said before in this thread, we are professional web devs/designers and as most people here are professional, they would expect payment for services rendered as you would pay any other person doing work for you.
August 24, 201213 yr Tbf you start of your pitch on a really bad foot....let me explain: 1. "Stuck between a rock and a hard place" as a title - it just screams of a begging nature... 2. You put a brick wall in front of you regarding speaking to a bank about a loan. Straight away, you said you are not even gonna bother with that route. Well, if you are prepared to dismiss potential routes of funding so easily, without even trying...well, i dont know what to say to that. Also, credit unions are a great place to substitute instead of a bank...but hey, you already said you are not going down that route.. 3. Getting wind up because of the way people respond to your OP not only says "this guy cant take any heat", but these are the people that you want to go in a JV and run a risk. Granted you also may be running a risk, but its your idea etc. If you cant handle fair criticisms at this very infant stage how would you really cope running a business? Thats what I think straight away tbh. if you wanna make an omelet, you gotta break some eggs. Edited August 24, 201213 yr by jamesosix

OK so im looking to have a website built working with a developer, i dont have the funds, and not even going to bother with the bank, if people with millions of pounds cannot get loans why would they give me the money i need. Please don't take offence but that's utter ******. If you have a sound plan with waiting clients (letters of intent, contracts, orders, etc) you will absolutely 100% without a shadow of a doubt secure capital injection, be it a bank or private venture group. I speak from experience; I've been both the proposer and the investor.

Another great paragraph of sense.

August 25, 201213 yr It was but it appears you have mod super powers! We also get 75% of ad revenue each and a company Merc, but we're really in it for the censor bypass. Ladies.
August 25, 201213 yr Can mods please remove this thread Sorry. The advice in this thread is sound and can help others in the future. Therefore this thread will remain.

August 25, 201213 yr Here's some free advice. 1. Make friends with developers (not just because you want them to build something for free, you wouldn't ask a building architect to design a house for you for free) 2. Be passionate about your idea, don't just tell a developer forum you have an idea for this awesome thing. We've all heard it before a million times. 3. Learn to write some basic code and build your own alpha version. (Here's a starting point for a web site: https://www.google.com/search?aq=f&sugexp=chrome,mod=0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=how+to+build+an+html+page) 4. Once you have an alpha version talk to your developer friends you made in step one and if they genuinely see something in it they will probably be willing to help. 5. Be willing to give up a large portion of your business since you don't have any actual development skill (10% of something is better then 100% of nothing). 6. Be a good project manager and do a very good job of articulating your idea. 7. Pitch your beta version (that you have given a large portion of to your developers) to Venture Capitalists.
