It occurred to me recently as I was updating my footer yet again that maybe I have accounts on too many sites.

 

Let's play website bingo - which of these sites and services do you use? Are there any that you've fallen out of love with? If so, do you have an alternative?

 

I mostly use the big three - Facebook, Twitter and Dribbble. With my current side-project, I'm only using Facebook and YouTube.

 

That said though, i've never really got on with Twitter. It's more of a second thought service for me and is usuaaly filled up with links to blog posts.

Twitter - Keep as above

Facebook - Personal choice based on what you use it for. I don't use mine for work but know plenty of people that do. No idea how successful it is.

Google Plus - Same as Facebook, keep it if you use it.

LinkedIn - Not a fan myself but useful for contract work so keep it.

 

Forrst, Delicious, JSfiddle, Flickr, Dribbble and Github - I'd drop them all from the site. They're handy tools but aren't really relevant to your portfolio. Customers won't be that interested in them, they're more for developing contacts in the industry.

Mainly just Facebook, Twitter and Gplus for me, although i am signed up to pretty much everything.

 

The main issue is when you sign up to something new and you have to create a brand new spanking button from scratch as it may not have existed in the set you original created/downloaded.

 

I also use URL's such as www.miniman-webdesign.co.uk/twitter instead of the actual URL. No reason for this other than OCD and easy to tell people when they ask.

The issue is the more accounts I use the thinner I'll have to spread myself. It's no good connecting them all as if you do that the quality of each post declines. What you may put on Twitter may now be suitab

I use Facebook, Twitter and Dribbble. I find myself not checking Forrst anymore, so I think I'll exclude that from now on.

 

I'm not a huge fan of social media, so I only use what I do out of necessity, or I find ways to make them useful to myself first. The social networking aspect is just an added side benefit.

I agree with the spreading too thin aspect - it's mostly what inspired this thread. I may move the icons to somewhere else on the site when I redesign, or do some rationalizing. As far as what clients want to see vs what peers want to see, I agree that a lot of stuff on there really isn't client-friendly, but I do want to maintain my own site as a sort of hub for all my online activity - maybe I'll do something like this. I've seen the code and there are a couple of things I'd like to improve.

 

I've been neglecting Forrst recently (and StackOverflow - damn, that's another icon) but I'm not going to write them off just yet.

 

I think anyone who writes code should have accounts at JSFiddle and GitHub, and I resolve to use mine more often.

I agree that your site should be you, however that's why i own the MikeChipshop domain name (believe me, there are too many Mike Bishop's in the world for me to ever dream of owning that domain), as this will be my hub of everything Mike Bishop.

 

Miniman Web Design still remains the web design experience and needs to be geared as such. 90% of my clients have no idea what all those social icons are and nor do they care. They just want to see previous work and 'direct' contact details.

 

I'm slowly building up the MikeChipshop domain as my major repository of everything 'me' but if it takes as long as my portfolio don't expect to see it any time soon!

I do want to maintain my own site as a sort of hub for all my online activity - maybe I'll do something like this. I've seen the code and there are a couple of things I'd like to improve.

Like most here, I have accounts on pretty much everything.

 

I only really use twitter, as its convinient and quick. Although I do regularly update my facebook and google+.

 

Whilst on the subject, what's peoples views on having both personal and business accounts for facebook and google+? Really needed? I don't do social media for personal stuff (if I wanna poke someone I'll phone them up and ask them round, not login in facebook!) and don't have a personal facebook page, but I do have a personal g+ page (only because business pages wern't available at first).

Yup. Separate business and personal pages on Facebook and Google plus. Why? because i live 500 miles from my best mates and 1500 from my closest family. For this reason a personal Facebook makes absolute sense but they don't want to see my business work. Nor do my clients want to see that i spent all day hiking when i should have been sweating at a computer getting things done for them lol

Granted. But I have no friends, and I don't do family, sooooo............. seems rather pointless me having a personal account.

I've finally wiped the dribbble off my chin and signed up, under the same username. Not sure exactly how I "get on" but apparently I just need one of you to invite me.

That's all you need really. Not sure why people bother with the other video sites.
