April 6, 201016 yr Hi Everyone. I've been wanting to put a basic site together for years, I'm basically catering it more for people who are venturing out onto the web and want their first site etc, and smaller projects etc. I wanted something fast loading, clean looking, easy to read etc. But I'm not sure where to go with it now, kinda ran out of inspiration.. I would really like to do something with the big text above the content but not sure what. Any thoughts, feedback, critique etc would be very helpful *you can be honest I can take it lol * Nothing is linked up yet, just working on the basic homepage at the moment Link Mediagem
April 6, 201016 yr I really like it - looks very professional and smart. Perhaps give the header or footer (only 1) a dark blue colour (the blue you've already used for h1), and change the blue/gray text to white on whatever one you choose to change. Perhaps put some fresh icons on the 'Web design & hosting' and 'Custom Pages' blocks (as background images in the top right or something).
April 6, 201016 yr It's far from boring, it's clean, easy to read and to the point! For your "big text above the content" try making it into one text block, something like this... Want a new website but not sure where to start?..Welcome to Mediagem!
April 6, 201016 yr Yep, got to agree with the above, I love websites that mainly concentrate on a white background with subtle colourful icons. Looks clean and does exactly what it says its going to do. When a potential client comes to view your site, there will not be any distractions of any kind which is realistically what you want.
April 6, 201016 yr Agree with the comments so far. This is a great looking website that's professional looking and easy on the eyes. My only criticisms are: The latest projects thumbnails are too small. If they have to be that big, I would use a smaller detail of each site in the box rather than try to cram the whole layout in there. The header text is not separate enough from your tag line. Bluedreamer's idea is nice, but if you don't want to do that, I recommend either boxing off your tag line, or changing fonts and/ or sizes of your content headers. Apart from those two things, I love it!
April 6, 201016 yr I agree, your site is direct and to the point with no distraction and it's gets your message across quite clearly. I like it. With a clean logo you're completing the look. Following on from others comments about the thumbnails - unless you really feel that you are going to add value to your customers with your latest news - I would use the space to present your project thumbnails larger. Sorry - of course I do not know what is in your mind for your latest news, but if your target audience is like I think - then you will use the space better with pictures I think. And less time worrying what your latest news could be!! Hope that helps!
April 6, 201016 yr Author Thank You Everyone.. I just got back to my computer and saw your replies, and though OMG!. made my night, I was feeling kinda stuck, I think sometimes you can look at something tooo much and you need to come away from it, but designing can be addictive so it's hard to pull yourself away from it. I've taken my time with this though as It's a learning experience for me, and I really want to try and keep things as clean as possible, (and make it easy to use etc). @andyl I will have a mess with that in a min and try it out @bluedreamer, you know I never even thought of that, amazing how you can miss the simple things, but that would give me an opportunity to add a little more text content to the site. @babybearuk Thank You:) @notbanksy, a few folk have mentioned the thumbnails so I will definately do something with that, and as suggested make them larger etc @WBC Thank You:) @Mike, Yep deffo gonna have a play around with the thumbs, I though of the news section as a way to keep some sort of dynamic content on the main page, but not sure how I would really use it yet Following on from all your Very Helpful replies, I shall proceed and tweak some more.. (moreee coffeeeeeee) Thank You everyone, I really appreciate your feedback!. M
April 7, 201016 yr Author Okie doke.. I took on board all the feedback and advice here (still got a bit to do), and here is how it's looking now. My link still need to find some nice icons, (and still thinking about the news section or make room for more pics etc).. I kinda like it.. not sure if it looks a bit too businessy hmm. I will tinker on. I've not even really began to think about what I'm going to write on there yet
April 7, 201016 yr I also like the design =) really great =) only thing I would change is the dashed border at the latest works' images into solid ...
April 7, 201016 yr Nice and clean and easy to follow - maybe, just maybe add something in the blue header - like a pattern/texture? I like how you did the pencil/paintbrush in the pocket look!! How'd ya do that?!!
April 7, 201016 yr Once you've got a logo going on, that header will be looking very smart I agree with the dashed borders around the portfolio images - just keep it solid there.
April 7, 201016 yr Author Thanks Folks!.. Yeah, I was thinking of making a subtle gradient for the header, and like was mentioned some kind of subtle graphic. I really like the look, but I'm not sure If I kind of overshot my target audience by making it look a bit too businessy.. @welshuw.. that graphic was kind of a fluke, I found the icon on inconfinder.com and when I pasted it onto the page it ended up up there, and I thought.. oooh!. the background of the sidebar was almost the exact colour as the grey on the icon so it gave the impression of the "in the pocket". nifty eh.. I had to create an img class for it though just so I could get the positioning spot on.. M
April 7, 201016 yr Liking it, its nice, clean looking and easy on the eyes for sure... Look at some big companies and their websites can give you a headache... KISS Keep It Simple Sunshine
April 7, 201016 yr Really liking the design, nice laid back, easy to read layout. Like previously mentioned I'd maybe consider having a play with some larger thumbnails for your projects, but it might well break the nice flow you have to the site now, so you'd need to weigh up the options. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with in regards to the logo, as this can have a big impact of how everything works together. But i think the site comes across professional, well designed, and is perfectly suited for the market area you're aiming at.
April 7, 201016 yr Author Thanks Everyone:) I've been trying to get a proper site online for years, but stuff always seemed to happen that took me away from it, but finally feel like I'm getting somewhere now, and I have the time too which is a bonus. to be completely honest I don't really know what I'm creating as such, just kind of going with the flow.. I sort of have an idea, but not sure about all the details etc and how all that will work out. Thanks for the tips and advice, and some really useful pointers here. Will have a mess with some ideas for the logo tonight:). Might take a bit of time off too and mingle in the forum.. Heh, Thanks for all the kind words and feedback:) M
April 8, 201016 yr I really like it. Clean, well layed out. The top bar blue reminds me of facebook though.
April 8, 201016 yr Author Hehe... I was wondering who was going to mention that.. I kind of thought the same, not a bad thing I suppose considering the success of facebook, but don't want folk to think I stole their pallette lol. (it just kinda turned out that way) I might add some kind of subtle graphic or something yet just to alter it just enough (sort of thing) M
