Was a contract presented and signed at any time? If so, were there any details in there what would relate to the ownership of the material?

based on what has been written in this thread, here is what I can see:
 
You produce a template that was substandard, so that wasted their time. You told them your computer was broken so that delay wasted more of their time. They then had to do it themselves, so that's more time wasted because of you.  
But not only did you completely waste their time, your actions cost them money.
 
Lesson that you need to learn from this :- only take on jobs that you can do, because clearly you were out of your depth with this one.

I just want to add that I don't care how much you charge for doing work that is entirely up to you. It just annoys me when people take on work that they can't actually do, because that gives us all a bad name.

I wouldn't expect to make your fortune selling templates through such sites,much better to find clients to work for.

Sorry to say but if you don't know what I mean then you've got a long way to go, there is a whole profession between designing the layout as an image and then the final results in WP.
 
You might be best paying a web design/developer to do it for this site. But if it is a career you are looking to be in then you'll need to go through a lot of learning first.

The best software to finish the job, well I use illustrator as well but any vector program should be ok. Just bewared if you use Photoshop and then your client asks for a version of the logo to be 10ft it could be a lot more work.

I'll write up my method once I've got it all reliably set up. Everyone should have one of those little servers; they're awesome.

This is (probably) my last post on this subject. If you can't see how stupid it is to block IE users from viewing your site it is your funeral. You are stopping 40 people out of every 100 from using your site. Whether you are against IE or not is irrelevant. As a designer every single person who wants to see your site should be able to. If not then you are not doing your job properly. If your not doing your job properly then you can't really call yourself a designer can you!

1.) Internet Piracy can't ever be stopped. It's a reality of the digital age. As the old saying goes if it's done in software it can be un-done in software and any law proposed to combat it is a futile act that will ultimately result in the loss of your rights for exactly zero gain.
 
2.) SOPA is a particularly vicious version. It grants US corporations the ability to remove the DNS records of websites that could potentially be used in the process of infringing copyright. If I can share any kind of media with you on a website, it's liable to be taken with very little restriction.
 
That's pretty much the entire web. This very forum. Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr. If a user can have an account the potential is there to violate copyright.
 
It is corporate censorship. Own a blog, put up a video criticising Viacom or someone? Their is practically no barrier to stop Viacom taking your entire website offline because of it.

If you build websites correctly and well then you don't need to build them twice, I've never had to build a website twice.
 
You can't tell your audience what to do, that's the fastest way of losing the audience. Seriously have a look in to usability and accessibility two of the most important things when it comes to web design.
 
You wouldn't stop a person from reading a book because there eyes are different and they might see things a bit differently or you might have to put more effort into the design (like for people with colour blindness).
 
Also look up progressive enhancement and graceful degradation. The web ins't a solid medium websites need to be able to adapt else they fail.

You're telling the text to change colour with the a:hover but the image is being changed by list:hover.
 
You want them to change at the same time, trying giving the a tag the bg image.
