Hi guys, been away for a while and started to get back into things, but Im looking after a site for work and trying to get something sorted which is making my head hurt. I hope someone would be able to shed some light on what I need to do Basically here goes: We have a WP site, which is installed in a different folder to the root of the domain (eg. http://www.domain.com/site) but you access the site by visiting the root of the domain. We want to take the site down in Maintenance mode, and we have installed some plugins (Maintenance and Maintenance Pro) which apparently set the pages headers to be 503 whilst it is active so we don't lose ranking on Google. Now I have activated the plugin and the maintenance page shows, but when I check in Google, it is saying that the site has a 301 redirect. I have also been told by various people that a good thing to do is make the robots.txt show a 503 with a Retry-After so that Googlebot suspends crawling for a while. Im just a bit stuck and need a bit of help please if you need anymore information ill try and give as much as I can. Thanks

You could always get a MacBook Pro. They have just had a price cut, so even the 13" Retina Display model is £1249, which is not actually too bad. But of course you will save a lot of money by going the Windows route. Of course it helps you learn to create your own CMS from scratch, and you would have more control but the amount of time needed to create something that you could actually sell/use would be too large. It just wouldn't make sense when 9 times out of 10, you can get WP/Joomla etc for free and just add plugins to get yourself to where you want to be. Create a design for it and then bam, your done.

100% agree, WordPress is just the standard (most of the time anyways). I know last months .NET magazine if you are in the UK had a good couple of guides on WordPress customisation if that helps at all. They also have a few tutorials online (Link). Just get to grips with that and you should be good to go
