  1. I managed to fix this by following the instructions within this article: http://www.w3it.org/blog/wordpress-feed-error-output-solution-how-to/
  2. Tom & Jerry do it for me - old time classics - I've got the entire DVD collection and have watched it over and over and it makes me laugh so much every time.
  3. Hi All I built a blog for a client a while back and all has been fine with it until recently when a user noticed that the RSS feed link wasn't working. When you click on the subscribe link you get the following error: So I've done the following to try and fix this and had no luck and I'm still getting the error message... 1. I checked all the RSS files and removed any blank lines within the code - didn't make a difference! 2. The feed was set up with feedburner so I visited the feedburner site to find that it has now been taken over by google, so I transferred it over and logged in via google and ran checks via the site to fix the feed - it brought up the same error and I followed all the instructions on the site to fix the feed - made no difference! 3. I installed the FixRSS plugin and ran this - it said it had fixed the feed and to click on a link to check - I did so and got a page not found page. When clicking on the subscribe link within the blog I got the same old error so this solution didn't make a difference either! 4. I backed up the database and all core files and upgraded wordpress to the latest version. Still get the error so this didn't make a difference either. 5. I deactivated the feedburner plugin and reactivated it. I'm now wondering whether to get rid of feedburner altogether! I can't see the feed for the blog at all using the following examples from the WP site: http://example.com/wp-rss.php http://example.com/wp-rss2.php http://example.com/wp-rdf.php http://example.com/wp-atom.php or http://example.com/?feed=rss http://example.com/?feed=rss2 http://example.com/?feed=rdf http://example.com/?feed=atom or http://example.com/feed/ http://example.com/feed/rss/ http://example.com/feed/rss2/ http://example.com/feed/rdf/ http://example.com/feed/atom/ the blog address is: http://www.wealthflow.com/blog/ and I would appreciate any help to resolve this issue as it's driving me nuts! I'm hoping someone will have a solution for me. by the way this is the code for the subscribe link if that helps at all: <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/wealthflow" rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml"><img src="http://www.feedburner.com/fb/images/pub/feed-icon16x16.png" alt="" style="vertical-align:middle;border:0"/></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/wealthflow" rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml">Subscribe to this Blog</a>
  4. If anyone is interested I've figured out how to do this 'my way' - not sure if it's the best way, but I've utilising the <> and added this to my CSS body.page-id-69 #home {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -0px -43px no-repeat; width:88px; height:43px;} body.page-id-70 #about {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -99px -43px no-repeat; width:90px; height:43px;} body.page-id-72 #themoneyboxselection {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -200px -43px no-repeat; width:335px; height:43px;} body.page-id-74 #stockists {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -629px -43px no-repeat; width:128px; height:43px;} body.page-id-76 #contact {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -769px -43px no-repeat; width:111px; height:43px;} body.blog #blog, body.single #blog, body.archive #blog,body.error404 #blog {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -547px -43px no-repeat; width:70px; height:43px;} Basically I visited each page and looked at the source code and copied the class generated within the body tag for each page. I then created specific instruction within the css that would turn the active state on for the navigation depending on what class was displayed in the body tag. As the blog is a little more complicated, there are extra classes there to cover all eventualities - not sure I've covered everything, but it'll be easy enough to add to the list if I find I'm missing something. So it's a solution that works for me, but might not be the best way of doing it.
  5. I've figured out how to sort the navigation out to get the links to work - I had to create a page called 'Blog' but not enter any content into it or set a template for it or anything. Within the Reading Settings I had to select 'front page' to be 'home' and the 'posts page' to be 'blog' and then within the navigation code I used the following: /home/ for the homepage link /blog/ for the blog link and as I've set wordpress to use a static page for the homepage it all works as it should now. Just got to figure out how to do the active states for the buttons when you're on a specific page - anyone got any ideas?
  6. I don't understand what you mean with regards to a page for the blog - the blog is the blog - it's not a page! I also don't knwo what you mean by this - "have you changed the html of the menu, to match the html of your old menu".
  7. I added page numbers to all the pages going from 1-6 but the blog would be page 4 and I can't number that as it's not actually a page. If you look at my CSS I've got "text-indent: -3000px;" in there so that text links don't appear over my image. If I take this out all the text links appear one on top of the other. So not sure how to get round this so that my actuall css styling for the nav gets picked up. still don't know how to include the blog in the navigation and also for the homepage to be the first page you come to. Help!
  8. If I insert the code you suggest this is what I see when I view source: <div id="nav"> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.cupcakehq.com">Home</a></li> <li class="page_item page-item-70"><a href="http://www.cupcakehq.com/about/" title="About">About</a></li> <li class="page_item page-item-76"><a href="http://www.cupcakehq.com/contact/" title="Contact">Contact</a></li> <li class="page_item page-item-69 current_page_item"><a href="http://www.cupcakehq.com/home/" title="Home">Home</a></li> <li class="page_item page-item-74"><a href="http://www.cupcakehq.com/stockists/" title="Stockists">Stockists</a></li> <li class="page_item page-item-72"><a href="http://www.cupcakehq.com/the-money-box-selection/" title="The Money Box Selection">The Money Box Selection</a></li> </ul> </div> so they're not in the right order for a start and none of the links work at all. any ideas?
  9. Right I've taken the setting off to use a static page for the front page and this allow me to use '/' to get to the blog and /home/ to get to the homepage - by doing this is there another way of soting it so that when you come to the site you get taken to the homepage first.
  10. I've never attempted a complete website in Wordpress until now and I'm finding the navigation side of thing a bit confusing. The site is goign to features pages as well as the blog and I've created the navigation using an image controlled by css like so: the code <div id="navigation"> <ul id="nav"> <li id="home"><a href="#" title="cupcakehq Home"><span>cupcakehq Home</span></a></li> <li id="about"><a href="#" title="About cupcakehq"><span>About cupcakehq</span></a></li> <li id="themoneyboxselection"><a href="#" title="The Money Box Selection"><span>The Money Box Selection</span></a></li> <li id="blog"><a href="#" title="Blog"><span>Blog</span></a></li> <li id="stockists"><a href="#" title="cupcakehq Stockists"><span>cupcakehq Stockists</span></a></li> <li id="contact"><a href="#" title="Contact cupcakehq"><span>Contact cupcakehqh</span></a></li> </ul> </div> the css #navigation {width: 880px; height: 43px; margin: 0 auto; padding: 0px; background: url(/images/navigation.jpg) no-repeat;} #nav {width: 880px; height: 43px; background: url(/images/navigation.jpg) no-repeat; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative;} #nav li {margin: 0px; padding: 0px; list-style: none; display: block; position: absolute; text-indent: -3000px;} #nav a {display: block; height:43px; text-decoration: none;} /* POSITION OF THE NAVIGATION BUTTONS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/ #home {left:0px; top:0px; width:88px; height:43px;} #about {left:99px; top:0px; width:90px; height:43px;} #themoneyboxselection {left:200px; top:0px; width:335px; height:43px;} #blog {left:547px; top:0px; width:70px; height:43px;} #stockists {left:629px; top:0px; width:128px; height:43px;} #contact {left:769px; top:0px; width:111px; height:43px;} #home a, #about a, #themoneyboxselection a, #blog a, #stockists a, #contact {height:43px;} /* HOVER AND ACTIVE STATES OF THE NAVIGATION BUTTONS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/ #home a:hover, #home .active {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -0px -43px no-repeat; width:88px; height:43px;} #about a:hover, #about .active {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -99px -43px no-repeat; width:90px; height:43px;} #themoneyboxselection a:hover, #themoneyboxselection .active {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -200px -43px no-repeat; width:335px; height:43px;} #blog a:hover, #blog .active {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -547px -43px no-repeat; width:70px; height:43px;} #stockists a:hover, #stockists .active {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -629px -43px no-repeat; width:128px; height:43px;} #contact a:hover, #contact .active {background:url(/images/navigation.jpg) -769px -43px no-repeat; width:111px; height:43px;} This is how I would do navigation for a normal site - so happy to change this to adapt to WP. I've inserted the code into my header.php file and it all looks fine. I've created all my pages [not styled yet] and pasrt styled the blog so far. I'm just wondering... a- how do I link to the pages and blog b- how to I show the active state for each link when you're on a specific page or in the blog I've set the blog to start on a satic page - namely the homepage and I guess the navigational links would be as follows for the pages / - for homepage /about/ /the-money-box-selection/ /stockists/ /contact/ what would be the link to the blog? Using /blog/ doesn't work. And then my mind boggles on how to get the active states - I'm using the latest version of WP and there's the new <body <?php body_class(); ?>> tag - no idea how to use this and whether it would help in this situation. Or do I try and do this using 'wp_list_pages' ??? Any advice more than welcome as I'm head scratching at the moment. I'm working on the site 'live' so you can visit it here
  11. no need for any more replies on this - I'm into day 2 of my trial of Zone Alarm Extreme and very happy with it so far. So will probably buy the full version once the trial has finished.
  12. glad you like them...buy away.
  13. Everytime I open FF the add-ons window pops ups and it's getting really annoying. I've looked in options and can't find a way to disable this - anyone know how?
  14. I did look into that one and didn't like the look of it - after an extensive chat with an old work colleague who uses ZoneAlarm I opted to go for ZoneAlarm Extreme. I've requested a refund for the Kaspersky software and as with everything Kaspersky it was a convoluted nightmare. Uninstalled it now and installed the 15 day free trial of ZoneAlarm Extreme - so far so good - I like it's simplicity and the info it gives out - e.g just before restarting it explained that for the first few hours of running my computer might run a little slower than normal and this is to be expected - to me that makes it all the more user friendly as I know what to expect. Fingers crossed it caries on being trouble free and then I'll purchase the software and make it legit in 15 days time.
  15. Not had much sleep this week - see my recent post on security software. But in general I work 9-6 with an hour off for lunch and an hour off to walk the dog in the afternoon. I don't answer the telephone after 6pm and only deal with work emails within office hours. I don't see why I should be available 24 hours a day just because I'm a freelancer. Also never answer the phone during my lunch hour as I wouldn't do this if I worked in an office. I treat freelancing like any normla 9-5 job - that way you don't get walked all over and taken for granted by clients and get called at any old hour to fix this and that. Yes I occassionally work out of hours, but that's mostly when I take the morning off to go get the groceries or have a dental appointment - I make sure I get the hours in and the work done. I also never switch my PC on for work at the w/e - that's my time not work time. OK this last week has been an exception as my pc got attacked by a virus and infected all my client websites, so I've been at it every hour of the day to get things sorted!
  16. Well definitely not liking Kaspersky and glad they have a money back guarantee Think I'm going to try zonealarm again as I don't trust AVG at all anymore - I was fullly up to date as I did a scan every morning before starting work and alsways checked for update at the same time. Beware all AVG users - it could happen to you. I just want something that is simple to use. Trying to see if I can configure cuteFTP to not store the passwords, so I have to type them in each time I want access which is a abit annoying as to save time I use the 'generated' password option when creating new ones rather than trying to come up with something - after dealing with 30 websites or more with no sleep it's hard to be creative and think of a password that get the green light [very secure password]. Any other suggestions for security software??? I'd love some recomendations!
  17. apologies for the spelling mistakes, but i'm tired/exhausted/stressed/fed up etec etc etc
  18. I've had an absolute nightmare of a week. My laptop got infected by a virus at the weekend. I thought I was protected by my AVG Security Software and that it had dealt with it. I didn't switch my computer on again until Monday afternoon to find that all my sites were infected and then discovered all my clients website were infected too. The virus is such that it infiltrates your ftp software steals all your logins and send them off to some remote server which that infects any page with default/index/home in the file name, althought a few other pages were also infected. So I spent a whole day trying to remove whatever was on my system using Mircosoft Malicious Software Removal Tool / Windows Defender / Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Think I got rid of it, but decided to wipe my computer compeletetly and reboot from the restore/recovery disc I made when I first got the laptop - all was going smoothly and it was as if I'd just bought the computer again. Once in, I installed a free version of AVG [i know, crap, but I had the installer to hand] - I just wanted to be able to go online and sort out all my client websites - so installed my FTP again got the original files from my backup drive and proceeded to go through every single site I've ever built and change the ftp password first then over write the infected files - this took up all on Tuesday and Wednesday. Checked all sites this morning and a few were infected again - I have no idea why, so I had to change the passwords again and re-upload files - all seem to be fine now, but I'm keeping an eye on them. So then someone recommend Kaspersky - so I went to their website to have a look - seems good, so I bought the latest version - Internet Security 2010 - installed it and ever since my computer keeps crashing. I tried to doa full system scan with it and my entire pc freezes and I have to power down using the poer button. If I'm running more than one program at a time, it can't deal with it. I didn't have this problem when I was running the free avg software. Oh and by the way I compeltely uninstalled that before installing Kaspersky in case anyone asks. I went online to look for support at the kaspersky site and it's taken over an hour to figure out how to get a customer ID to actually email them - when I everntually did that and got a confirmation email, I'm told that eta of a response if after 4pm tomorrow! I want to deal with this now. I relly don't like this software at all, don't like their site, don't like their forum - it's all so overly complicated, convoluted and confusing. I just want something to protect my pc from virus attacks! Software I've used before Norton - took over my pc and it was like having parental control swithced on - hated it ZoneAlarm - same sort of freezing issues as Kaspersky and it seemed to have compatibility issues with all my sotware AVG - perfect until now - wouldn't trust it again after the week I've had Any recomendations?????
  19. Is it OK to do this within my CSS? html {background: url(assets/bgrpt_headerbg.jpg) top left repeat-x;} body {background: url(assets/bgrpt_headercolours.png) top center no-repeat; margin-top: 12px;} I want to have a background image for my header and then a transparent image background over the top of this and I tried the above CSS and it works fine - just wondered if it's OK to do - both the code and css validate and I'm sure I've used this idea before on a site, but can't remember which. Anyone else do this?
  20. that's nonsense! Red and green are complimentary colours - just like blue and yellow and purple and orange. In moderation and done well these colours can work really well together.
  21. don't like it - the background swirly green thing just looks like something out of a stock lirary and you've just put text on top - neither fits with the other.
  22. I've installed the thematic theme and that gallery theme by Chris Wallace too, but not sure I'm going to try and tackle redesigning it - it's all a bit too complicated for this tiny budget and I've not got time. It's a great theme and think it'd be great to use as an off the shelf thing, but it's not for this project I don't think. So I've just discovered this tutorial about Custom Write Panels and going to adapt my Love/Hate blog theme instead to incorporate custom write panels which will make it a lot easier to use by the client - here's hoping. This would also be good for me too as I find updating that blog a bit of a pain. I've also got some friends who really like the format of the blog and if I develop it so that it's easier to update then I could let them have copies of it too - so I think it will be worth the bother. I hate mucking about with other people's CSS and code and trying to figure out how to change stuff to work the way I want it - I'd much prefer to work with my own code and make it better.
  23. I always use the starkers theme as my basic framework and then customise it to my needs. The reason I was asking about thematic, is that the theme I have just downloaded uses thematic and I wonder whether I can get around not using it and going with starkers instead. I don't need advice on whether to use WP as if you'd read previous posts you'd realise that I already use it - I designed and built the Love/Hate blog already mentioned.
  24. Thanks for this - I'm going to download it and see how easy it is to re-style - don't have a lot of time on this job so don't want to be spending too much time mucking about. Looks like it's got more features than I need. I also don't understand why you have to download the thematic theme to make it run - does anyone know what thematic is???
  25. which theme do you mean? I'm finding the big in your face text and no image examples a bit annoying on that site.
