When I think about it you should just install BBPress and Buddypress, making a forum gives you all the room they need for their site.

I personally never really use any themes but only make child-themes so can not help with theme tips, plugins you will not need many to get the functionalities as presented on the sample image.
 
Unless they want you to make a full fledged membership site if people need to upload their barmitzva´s and images etc.
That will be a much more complicated website and I would suggest BBPress, Buddypress to start with as this creates a forum where you can make separate categories for these uploads.

Hi Hoax, I think that everybody here agrees that if your client gave you that as what they want you should ask them if they can tell you why and what they want to do with the site.
 
It is so simple like 1990´s text based internet, you should ask them to show you a site which can act as an example, ask them to go online and find something that looks like what they want because that image they send you is really really bad.... even the Jewish sites need to be of this century.
 
But anyway, you should start looking into making child themes, with your own "skeleton" child template you can produce websites in 1-2 days if they are this simple.
 
I do not think a template like that exists as it is not what a modern design looks like.
 
Good luck though, do not spend too much time on the project, fast turnover for a simple site.

That image cannot be a mockup. Nobody would be pleased with a site which looked like that. It looks like the kind of thing you make in Word as a very rough layout if you don't do graphics. Is that what it is? Surely it requires a little design and interpretation? it isn't a website either. It looks like a homepage, has a lot of maybe links to other pages on it but no content, that must be on the other pages. How would you design a homepage without knowing anything about the rest of the site? Are they links to other pages? Looks like a menu across the top, maybe, looks like a menu down the Right Hand Side, maybe, looks like another menu in the footer, maybe, but really we don't know. Not three menus? Nobody makes a web page by starting with an image and then slicing it up to make a table layout anymore. That all finished about ten years ago. It is the wrong way to start. The functionality which is suggested by your mockup - we don't know what it is That might be why you haven't got the simple help you were hoping for.

If you don't know how to code a site to match a mockup you shouldn't take the job. There are plenty of "shortcuts" (site builders, frameworks, themes, plugins etc.) in the world of web development, but they will not be of any help if you don't know what you are doing.

You could build a theme from scratch. It's really very simple if you know wordpress (which you say you do).
 
But if that's the only image they have given you then any developer would struggle.
 
And as it looks like some sort of classifieds site there is a whole chunk of code needs writing - unless they are using a pluign for this in which case the layout will be constrained by the plugin.
 
Two day's isn't long enough for a project of this size.

It maybe worth you going back to your client, ask do they want a website that looks like the JPEG they gave you, or are they showing you the colours to use along with the functionally they are after. They may have letter heads or society colours that they would like you to use.
 
You could throw some ideas to them with some examples which would help you to design something a bit more creative. You need to end up with a clear brief of what they what the website to look like and function like.
 
I’m sure there are people on the forum that use WordPress and will be able to help you will creating pull-down boxes, contact forms, etc.

Look at the positives, the client is giving you an idea of how they want their website to look and function, it will save you having to keep making changes. It may not look as nice and flashy as you would like, but this is what the client wants, they are the ones paying for it.
 
Being that you are familiar with creating websites in WordPress, this would be a quick and easy option for you.

I know how to use Wordpress and build websites just fine - I've never been presented with a layout to copy onto Wordpress down to every last detail before. Usually I just get a basic outline of how the website should look like, and the rest is up to my design.

I created this thread in hopes of receiving advice on how to create a website identical to the photo, and would greatly appreciate some. I understand that it can't be done in 2 days time; I'll ask for an extension.

Have you tried using WordPress or dare I say it, Wix to create this website?
 
It will take you more than 2 days to learn how to create a website using HTML/CSS. It may be worth going back your client letting them know that you are not going to be able to build the website in that time frame and will need more time.

Hmm. I can't imagine that's what anyone will want the site to look like. Is it more to show features and functions? Looks like it requires:
Drop down second level navigation, or is that displaying small ads by category? A form for emailing small ad text and images, plus some other forms. indexing of pdf print issues auto update of monthly deadlines Sorry to say, if you don't know how to do it you aren't going to learn it in two days.

Yes, Hoax is the handle that I use for this website. Does anyone have any advice? Is there some kind of way to merely make sections of the photo into click-able buttons, or do I have to build everything from scratch and try to make it as identical as possible?

Anyways, a new client would like me to essentially build a website based off a layout - in other words, they sent me a JPEG of a website they designed, and they want me to "bring it to life", fully functional menu, buttons, etc.

In example, say I present you with a photo/drawing like this:



How can I turn this into a website with full functionality?

Any help is greatly appreciated; if I can get this done satisfactory and on time, it'll really help a lot down the line with my income. Thanks!

The website costs us £190 instead of paying a webdesigner many thousands lol
 
In relation to click and collect that is certainly something I will update into the webpages + the range of wallpapers we have available. I'll get there with time.

I thanked you for your advice previously, though I ask for advice it doesn't necessarily mean I will take all advice and make changes based on someone elses thoughts - I've made a lot of changes since the last time I posted including featured products (Actually this was your advice). I'm still on with that, nearly finished though.
 
We've sold wallpaper in Northern Ireland, Southern England and North Western England, those people can not just pop in-store. We have focused all our advertising on the local area for now, while we grow. The website and products already have a collect feature rather than an order (if you click through and actually check) and we have quite a few local people use that feature.
 
One of the main reasons many leave the site in my opinion is our lack of products (that will be the case for the next few months while I get the website and products on as I want them) + the navigation sorted. This is a working progress as I'm not massively fond of the navigation at the moment + I want a better search function - the search function at the bottom of the site is not being used (will probably move to the top of the site)
 
+ I've got to make sure all the products are tagged as they should be

Erm, our layout is similar to other online wallpaper stores - apart from the pictures and slightly different search types. We do have categories and I see people already click in and out of them (I look at where people enter the website and leave etc)
 
I dont know how long it is since you last decorated but we sell a lot of stock you won't find in homebase and BandQ etc. We have the paints on to show we do them, to be honest we probably won't sell many of these online - I plan to change these to show what products we have rather than the e-commerce side we have with that part of the business at the moment. Paints are a pain to deliver anyway (always get damaged)

I don't think so. A developer have PS knowledge is a plus point. In some cases web developer uses PS. But if we talk about the business with complicated design requirements would appoint a professional designer or they will outsource their work. So, it is not necessary for a web developer to have expertise in Photoshop.

If you are studying syntax alone without actually taking the time to understand what the language actually does, I think that it will be much harder for you to understand. I think the people that developed the language are trying to make it as easy as possible for someone to grasp it, I don't think they are trying to make it a challenge for you.
 
I would say that every html tag is quite descriptive of what it does, not all the time is it intuitive and you have to learn what the tag does, but most of the time there's a reason why they decided to call it that, when people think of css, they don't remember that it's designed to cascade, which means "a process whereby something, typically information or knowledge, is successively passed on.", so you make use of the cascade to keep the style as simple as possible and don't have to style everything specifically, I used to wonder why they would choose these names, but then realize that there's actually a good reason for it...
 
Now if your learning syntax, wouldn't it be a much better idea to get a good grasp of what the language actually does before you start learning, I've known what it all does except node.js and some other things, if you go into it just learning syntax it just doesn't make sense, but if you can kind of picture what it's doing from understanding what it does deeply, then you will grasp it quicker. HTML and CSS is very self explanatory, but with node, because it's not visible of what it does, we don't understand it, all we can really understand from the name is that it has something to do with networks at first.
 
I think maybe the education system makes people think like this, they just want people to regurgitate information, like memorizing facts, but don't actually take a step back to think about it.
 
Closures for example, many people just don't understand what it is, I even had trouble to get my head around it, what I understand is that it's basically a function in a function, and I imagined they called it that because one function is enclosed in the other, it gives it a private scope. The developers want to bring the language down to be as simple as possible so everyone can get it, not purposely making it hard because they like a challenge.
 
Maybe this was obvious but from what I see it looks like many people are just fed with facts and data, but rarely does anyone take a step back to think about what it does. Not all the time the language developers make it intuitive, but if I was learning it all again, I imagine you could get an understanding quicker from learning how it works exactly and why they would call it what they do. And it would probably help to understand why it's useful. Something like angular also, the name would seem like they pulled it out of a hat, but it probably describes the framework, I imagine because you can load things instantly, it's sharp, angles are sharp. But with some other names, they probably just pulled it out of a hat, like ember.js, it does not describe the framework at all. Most of the time you will find that the developers tried to make the language as simple and easy to pick up as possible...

when you say you're trying to 'open it' what are you trying to open?
 
index.html should be opened with a web browser. If I was to hazard a guess, you might be trying to open a configuration file in like, myfile.js in something like MS WORD.

Keep WordPress updated Don't use admin a user name Use a plugin like Wordfence, Use https Lock down your server Evaluate themes and plugins before you install them Just like any other CMS, there are plenty of ways to stay secure. And just like any other CMS is can be hacked, but you can do a lot to keep yourself safe.

Thanks for all the feedback, really appreciate it! I think if the next update from my developer still has mistakes, then I'm going to take the loss and look for another developer to finish the project. I don't think there's anything very difficult for most developers (simple directory style site), so if anyone thinks they might be up for it, just let me know and I'd be happy to send all the files and instructions (I'm a graphic designer, so I designed the whole site).
 
The developer is using his own Wordpress account for the build (I have the log in details), is it easy enough to copy everything without him knowing to pass to another developer? I know there's plugins you can install to do it.
