Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more man. It's like travelling back in time going from your designed site to the landing page.
 
Although I'm just a kid and probably no-where near your level of expertise, from my experience and what I've been told by people I work(ed) for.. Is it worth getting involved? I mean, do you work with this site often? Is it something you have a say about normally? Was it just a one-off piece of work?
 
At the end of the day, if it's not your business the best you can do is offer an opinion as a web designer yourself. Surely that can't do any harm but customers can be real difficult at times and may just reject your opinion and leave it. Either way I don't think you have anything to lose, do you? If it does bother you just say how you feel and see what the client says, you may even up getting asked to improve it and gain some extra money on the site. Who knows?
 
Reading that back, I do seem to blab on a bit.. Sorry about that. I hope it is of some use!

It's not just your fonts that are slowing down your page speed, you're making a lot of http requests, consider concatenating all of your js and css files, minfiy and gzip them.
 
You have a lot of icon images, why not put them all into a sprite, again that will greatly reduce the number of http requests you have.
 
These requests are the biggest bottleneck on your websites loading time.
 
To take things further still consider lazy-loading your images, so you don't load images below the page fold until you scroll to them.

This sounds familiar. I've considered looking in to UX path myself as I always find it interesting - I mean at the moment all I have done is read a few articles but I'm talking in the future (whilst at uni). How do you find it?  
Whilst Fuzzy Logic & rbrt are both respected members and both put forward a good argument, its not like I take sides. I mean, we're all probably in different areas of the world and with different preferences. Like what was said earlier, it seems like it is down to the individual and they choose it as they go along? Guess I'll fond out, ey?

To get a working holiday visa for Australia is a piece of cake -- if you're from a country with a reciprocal agreement -- most EU countries including the UK are. Yopu also have to be under the age of 30 at the time of application and possess clean criminal record. Took a few days to get mine. Finding work can be a challenge but if you have the right mindset you shouldn't have to wait very long.
 
For a permenant work permit & residency yes it's a little more complex but not out of reach if you find an employer wishing to sponsor you, I found several however I decided upon Sweden, a little closer to home
 
As for being lonely, unless you have serious social issues then you'll struggle to find any 'alone' time if you're staying in hostels - which I recommend for solo travellers. The thing is most of the people you meet in the hostels are like minded travellers who are mostly travelling solo and looking to meet others. One of the joys of travelling was to meet people from all over the world, living and working & partying with this people. An experience I'll never forget.

In fact, that was exactly what I wanted to hear! Because I didn't want to feel alone in this!

Although we at the four corners of the world, we all felt the same.

So now it's time to get back to work!

Although my opinion probably means nothing in comparison to those who are already professionals and have been for years (and I'm just some kid). I can say that I've felt in a similar way. Sometimes I take on projects thinking I could manage easy and then it's almost like a brick wall is placed in front of me and I'm trapped - questions arise such as "what do I do?", " what if I'm not good enough" and "should I be doing this?!" But like the others have said, it seems to be a common thing with designers etc. I normally look on places such as themeforest, dribbble and so on just to get my brain back in gear, in hope that works.
 
Don't get yourself down about it, it seems a pretty common situation.

I'd say 3, as it makes it clear what are categories and which are sub-categories.

I also use jQuery UI effects sometimes Mainly when I need to support earlier versions of IE.
 
 
Best practice is to put the javascript code in the footer, before the closing</body> tag

Look around for inspiration at what others have created. Borrow ideas and implement them in to what you need. This doesn't mean copying them exactly obviously but it can help seeing a selecting of websites which you can then merge in to your own custom website.
 
Like the above said, it's also important to think about your content and think about how that is presented in a clear to read but neat looking way.

50 photo's is a lot. All I can suggest, from past experience, is to cache the photo's (as long as you not plan on changing them often) by using .htaccess - this way if a user revisits your site then the photo's are saved locally. I'm pretty sure that's how it works anyway, someone correct me if I am wrong.
 
Although this would solve the solution for constant visitors, you still have the issue of first-time loads. For using experience, I would suggest using a little piece of jQuery which will allow you to show a loading animation until all the images have loaded, that way once the images have loaded the slideshow will run smoothly.
 
Also, don't forget to optimize your images!
 
Just a heads up; there may be other, more simple solutions to this, lets see what others have to say.

I'm rather newbie in webdesign but I do my best, I learn, create, test, crush and continue to create! Together with a partner in crime (girl too!) who is graphic designer we founded our little tiny agency: www.madebymaud.com - I'm polishing and finishing the layout of the website now.
We are only too, she is visual, I'm techy, sometimes we laugh that we definately need 3d person to help us with webby stuff - a smarty guy!
 
I came from financial school, than did marketing stuff, now reconverted into webdesign. I love this challenge. I love to learn. I know that I know only a drop of the ocean in this area but I'm brave

It's pretty much been explained above, the best bet is to get your head around the waypoint javascript and see how things go. Post on the forum to keep us updated.

First impressions count for a lot. I don't want to seem like I am being to negative here but when I first visited the site, I wasn't aware it was a game. The site just gives off a kind of 'rushed' feel. It's just little things like the sub-headings/navigation being hard to read, the background being blurry and the contrast between the text and background is slightly in your face.
 
To be honest, it's not too bad. A bit more work to it, making it a little more friendly for the user and it could be quite nice.

Worth the read, it's an extremely long piece of writing but it's just full of 100's of useful tips and guidelines.
 
I seriously regret ever starting this because now I am so engrossed I'm missing out on a fair bit of revision, which isn't the best idea considering my final exams are just around the corner.

Just to add on to what the above said.
 
Try getting in to the habit of using classes (. instead of #) as appose to ID's as they load quicker. ID's are best kept for use with javascript.

It's very nice, I like it a lot. The user experience is good too, not loaded with gimmicks for the sake of showing off like many I could mention.
 
On your blog's only one of your post's has a tag showing, you may want to do something about that. Adding a search to your blog page would be a good idea too.

A little about me
I'm currently 16, just turned a couple weeks ago, and I'm from the UK. I've been in to web designing for around a year and a half now and it's something I want to as a career. I'm currently fluent in HTML(5), CSS(3) & Basic jQuery/PHP of which I normally stick to purely designing. I also like to spend a lot of my time in Photoshop designing mockups and just playing around with some graphics.
 
I thought I'd sign up here as I've been looking for a decent forum, for web designing, for some time now and they all either seem to be the 'super quiet' forums or the 'way too big to get any recognition at all' kind of forums.
 
Anyway, I'll hopefully be posting some of my designs soon to gather some feedback. See you around

I currently have 2 monitors. I saved and saved for quite a while before getting them. I was a little hesitant at the time but it was worth it.
 
It comes in super handy for doing things like: having localhost up on one screen and having your text editor open on the other.. Or, when gaming, you can have some music playing on the other (just a person thing there )
 
I currently have the Nvedia GTX 650Ti - which has 1 VGA, 2 DVI and a HDMI slot and I currently use the same 22@ Acer monitor (one with VGA and the other DVI and they look the same).
