WordPress by far is the best to start with, the most used and pretty much every CSS gallery going is based on designs in WordPress

Web CEO is good but I found www.link-assistant.com far better and wit a lot more tools available. They also do a free download, SEO spyglass is excellent.

It may be worth looking at the Adobe Certified Expert Qualifications I have gained 4 in CS3 and learnt a huge amount. To be honest I only ever use about 20% of the tools in each on a regualr basis but to know the potential helps. Also they are respected by employment agencies within the trade and employers but not all know about them yet. Cost about £100 for each exam. They won't make you a great designer though, they just test your knowledge but combined with experience they are well worth it.

I get around 7 million calls a week from Indian call centres offering backlining at 2p an hour (OK slight exageration). Has anyone used this service? Any tips for outsourcing backlinking?

Check the site copyblogger or problogger for tips on setting one up. Also pro blogger does an excellent book.

Hi Guys, When submitting to directories, would you use your website name or keywords such as 'plumbers london' ? The domain I'm using does have some keywords in, and I doubt I'll get anywork directly from the directories.

I did the 301 update about a month ago, may just be a waiting game I think. The plumbing site is doing very well in the rankings. I've not done any offsite SEO other than join Yell. Its ranked for Central Heating, Boilers, Plumbers and Heating Engineer in North london, Herts & Essex and top for a few. Its currently on page two for Central Heating London, next stage is building links in directories (yahoo directory, BOTW, local and related directories) articles, youtube videos of central heating problems, joining forums, Social bookmarking of articles, network sites such as twitter, linked in etc. and styling those to the same design as the site. starting a forum for central heating, press releases (not sure on this one yet). Think thats it for now. This bit is new to me so going to give my client a good price which helps me learn this, he's very happy with the success so far, getting 500 hits a months, 350 are from google search, and about 5 enquiries a day. I'm hoping to make it as good as heatingcentral.com and the big competitor is pimlico plumbers but their site is pretty bad. Still need to do a few more tweeks on the site. Couple of questions if you don't mind guys, is their anything I can add to offsite SEO, also Andrew, whats your setup for your videos? I'm know a lot about still photography but not a great deal about video. What camera did you use? Also little tip, I saw on another guys site he had a MSN messenger box for immediate communication, may be quite good for customers talking to you without feeling committed to much.

One problem I've had with my site is that I've changed my domain from reynolddigital.com to webdesignlondon123.com for the purposes of SEO. I have changed all links to the site, optimised onsite ok, but the Pagerank hasn't changed and no matter what I do the position on google hasn't changed from the old domain, just replaced the name. I've set up 301 redirect, maybe I just have to wait. Any ideas? I understand what you say about the traffic sites but I have had quite good success with new sites to boost them from say page 20 to page 2 pretty quickly. This may be a coincidence though. I don't market myself as an SEO expert as still learning the offsite ropes, I'm pretty good onsite though. Strange that as its been very successful and other than British Gas, I see no other Central heating site that beats it. Navigation has two purposes, 1 is for SEO and the other well is for clearer navigation. The comments I generally get is either its very good or its a bit overwhelming but design is subjective and the results speak for themselves (currently page 1 for london)
