5 Best Directories?

Featured Replies

You could always Google competitors and see where they are listed...

You could also check backlinks of your competitors (yahoo site explorer) and use much better ways of backlinking like creating partnerships and writing articles for local papers etc. Links where you will actually get traffic that is interested.

Infinatley better than submitting to 5 generic directories.

(You will also find each industry has got its own directories.)

Thanks charliesaidthat

Our company is in the Trailer manufacturing industry producing trailers for golf courses, parks, etc

The biggest player in our field is http://www.iwt.co.uk(ifor williams), they generally come top of google when searching for the keyword "trailers" etc. I would love to some day get above this company in SERPs but i will struggle to write articles, blogs other PR related stuff for our product range. I have only just started with SEO and will persist in my quest and with the help on this forum, 1'll hopefully get there. Any other advise would be much appreciated! Take your time to consider the copy on your website. It will be very important when trying to conquer the Search Results.

In your industry you may find writing useful articles about golf in general. You could consider some kind of partnership with a golf course directory itself, and incorperate golf course information into your site??

Maybe you could take it in a different direction think about all the possible uses of trailers and start writing about them.

10 Novel uses for our trailers (and do a series of articles with pictures of the interesting things you could do?)

The copy won't be there long, it's getting a bit confusing with it running in the background.

So far i've:

  1. Made sure the site validates
  2. Used title tags properly?
  3. Used meta tags for description and keywords
  4. Used heading tags correctly?

I've submitted the site to a few directories, i also need a sitemap.

What next?

Hi

Please could you guys suggest 5 decent directories by which to obtain links for a new site?

Many Thanks

1. Dmoz

2. Yahoo

3. BOTW

4. WOW

5. UncoverTheNet

The big generic directories are great to get into, however most websites don't get included for quite some time.

Try looking at directories that are specific to your trade. These will be much more likley to direct quality traffic your way. Also these directories should not be found with a search including the word directory, rather a term that you would use to find that service in a search engine.

Hi,

Some good suggestions for you so far but there is a hell of a lot you can do to start generating quality traffic.

Here are a few suggestions for you.

Keyword Research

Keyword research is extremely important when formulating your SEO campaign.

There are many great keyword tools available to you. Both free and paid. Check out the link below for more detail on keyword research tools.

http://www.seobook.com/archives/001013.shtml

You'll find a lot more information on these tools by doing a Google search for 'keyword research' or 'keyword research tools'.

You'll want to build a list of around 500 to 750 keywords and keyword phrases to start off with. Set up a spreadsheet with your list of keywords and add details for each on search traffic per month, day, year on average. Also include details of the KEI and KOI for each keyword and keyword phrase. You'll find more details on what these mean by following the links.

It's important to build a list of varying types of keywords both short and long-tail (long tail phrases are keywords with three or more search terms in).

Content

Once you have your list you can begin structuring and developing your content. My advice would be to create a separate page for each keyword or keyword phrase, with the relevant link structure to that page, for example, for the keyword 'large golf trailers' = 'http://www.yourdomain.com/trailers/large-golf-trailers.html'.

Make each pages content specific to each keyword or keyword phrase and keep the word count per page to around 250 words. Make sure that you keep your keyword density to around 4% to 7% of the content. This means that overall, your keyword or keyword phrase will appear a total of that percentage compared to 100% of the content, if that makes sense. There are tools available to check your keyword density. check the link below.

Keyword Density Checkers

Now this might sound like a lot of work so far but trust me it will all be worth it in the end.

Backlinking

Once you have your pages constructed, you can begin your backlinking campaign for each keyword and keyword phrase.

Backlinking makes up 85% to 90% of any SEO campaign and it is an on-going process, that never ends.

Firstly, you'll want to create one way backlinks. These are links from other sites to your site with no reciprocal link.

Secondly, you need quality and relevant links.

The quality refers to high PR websites. That's websites with at least a Page Rank of 3. You need to make sure that they also allow do-follow links. This simply means that they pass PR or 'Link Juice' to the website the link is pointing to.

The relevant part refers to websites that relate to your specific niche. So if your selling golf trailers you want links from golf websites and trailer websites.

Now there are many ways to get backlinks. I've detailed some below.

Do a search, based on your keywords, for do-follow blogs and forums and begin making a list of these. For example 'golf do-follow blogs' or 'golf do-follow forums'. Add as many as you can find to your list.

Set up accounts for Twitter, Facebook and various other social media websites. Search in Google to find these places. Begin building friend lists and post to these pages often.

Try to think out of the box and think about who your customers are. If the majority of your customers are golfers who like a good old pint after a game, try posting links on pub and club websites.

Add your website to niche specific and non-niche specific directories like those mentioned above.

SPAM and Community

When creating links it's important to build a relationship with the community your posting to. Add value to your posts and don't SPAM. Generally, these types of posts are filtered and removed anyway but if your build relationships and add to the community your posts will gain more attention and in turn more traffic.

No one likes SPAMMERS.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is a great way to generate traffic and sales. Set up a newsletter form on your website and begin building a list.

Also, you could sign up for a service like the Directory of Ezines. This website has a list of thousands of email newsletter lists in many niches with subscriber counts from thousands to millions.

AdWords and Advertising

Hire a professional or take the time to learn about AdWords properly. Run a campaign in conjunction with your on-going SEo campaign. Be careful though, you really need to know what you're doing with this or you could lose a lot of money.

Summary

This is a brief post on just some of the things you can do to increase your rankings and build a successful SEO campaign but there is a lot more to SEO than what I've mentioned.

I'd advise hiring a professional, such as myself, to get you started.

I hope this helps. :)

Hi Guys,

When submitting to directories, would you use your website name or keywords such as 'plumbers london' ?

The domain I'm using does have some keywords in, and I doubt I'll get anywork directly from the directories.

There are thousands of directories across the web. You can only better decide which ones are the most appropriate for your use. I feel "tbmedia" is correct to certain extent. but, then, you have to decide friend.
