EDIT BY DIZI: This is parts of a different thread as it was overshadowing the other thread.

I was first to enter and didn't even make the shortlist :( . So much for having a chance of winning :pp .

Shame I didnt get on the shortlist :( But yeah, I like Acuity the best...

Same. Oh well always next month maybe.

I wasn't short listed either, but as was said a lot of people entered so it must have been tough for Ben to select a list :)

Ya there seems to be quite a bit of them. Don't want too many to vote on :) Seems like a good competition so far. Acuity took my vote

Ben which site did you submit?

  • Author
Cabbagination.

cabbage. just keep trying, I am. I don't really think there is a rhyme or reason to the ones he picks. I could be wrong but I'm thinking he's just picking at random? Its a pretty cool site too. I'm suprised how well the grass blends in at the bottom no matter what position you put it in (was thinking I was going to see the line where the graphic ends) B)

Anyways Love the enties this month. great sites guys, had trouble deciding my final vote

I have no idea how these are picked, but I am sure that it is done in a way that is fair for all those that enter. So I hope no one is too upset about not being shortlisted, after all this is all just in good fun.

Well if cabbagination didn't get then it has to be random to be honest. There isn't another explanation that I can think of.

And if it is random then that begs the question - what's the point? I know its just supposed to be fun but its still called 'website of the month' and the sites that we vote for are picked at random?

So not the website of the month.. just the best random site of the month that happens to have been entered into the random pool

Just had a look at Cabbagenation in IE6 and the left nav overlaps the wood when maximised, seems to be other errors such as the css tutorial being a broken link.

Design aside maybe Ben noticed these?

Further without giving away any preference, I don't think it's much better or necessarily better than many entries this month.

People will always have different opinions on what is or makes a good website.

:flm7:

now now lets not start a fight. We don't know how they are picked and really it doesn't matter, everyone who enters deserves just as much of a chance to be in the shortlist as anyone else does. Not everyone will be happy with who is in the shortlist, that's just the way it works...it is in fun and as such should be seen as that. Just enter again next month and hope that you are in it then. Being upset over something like this seems pointless to me and I really don't get why people are making such a big deal. So lets leave it at that and not continue this 'such and such should have been shortlisted' conversation.

Any more such messages will be deleted as this should be about those that were shortlisted not those that weren't.

Pure assumption and totally inaccurate.

There's always next month! :)

Best of luck for this months voting! :)

So what is the accurate explanation then ben. It's all very well contradicting me but you aren't offering any alternative.

It's also all very well saying 'its only a bit of fun' and 'theres always next month' but to be honest guessing at what the 'possible' criteria for getting in 'might' be isn't in the slightest bit fun, so if thats how its going to be then I've got no interest in taking part.

Ditto. I always thought this was more of a friendly contest / competition, rather than a pot luck / lottery. If trying hard / being good isn't going to get you shortlisted, where's the motivation?

Well the shortlist is chosen by myself and work colleagues and is normaly judged on intial impact a website has - so we are going on the aesthectics here also if we are feeling a tad nosey we'll have a look at the code aswell. How a member chooses to vote for their fav' is down to them wether it is the look or the way it's coded.

Cabbage's website did not make the final cut as the link submitted was:

http://www.cabbagination.com/

It links to a holding page so I obviously did not submit this. It's definitely advisable to double-check your links before submitting.

Many thanks.

Thanks for clearing that up Ben, hopefully now eggman will stop making foolish assumptions as it just goes to show he can't be right all the time.

I also hope that this doesn't take away from what wotm is about and that members will still see it as a fair competition, rather than listen to the misguided rants of others.

Yeah call me foolish and misguided - then lock the thread, real nice way to handle the situation, makes you come across real diplomatic and reasonable.

I'm so sick of forums that are really friendly all round but have a couple of people on a complete powertrip who simply delete anything they don't agree with and can't be bothered to face up to legitimate reasons for unhappy members.

Now watch this post magically disappear!

I have reopened this thread in order that this discussion can carry on in a way which is within the forum rules, should it need to.

This means, reasonable points made in a reasonable manner without swearing or personal attacks.

Eggman your post has been moved here. The swearing has been removed. The person who locked the thread was not the same person who called you "foolish" and "misguided". Yet a different person has moved your thread here and edited it.

No one is on a power trip or deleting messages they don't agree with. Rather there is an entire moderating team who consistently has to deal with your posts because they break the rules as you have been warned about.

Lets magically do this one different and lets play at your game shall we.

I called you foolish not Ben and Ben closed the thread so once again I think you are being foolish in attacking someone who has nothing to do with comments. Ben has no control over what I do or say and chances are Eris or him will remove this post too. I hope it won't as I want all members to be able to read and see exactly what has been going on with you these past few weeks.

If you wanted to confront me about it you could have PMd me, but that's not your style you would rather make a public comment, so here is mine.

I am so over you, I try to defend you and make it so you get a fair chance when members complain about you. That is right we get messages of complaint about eggmans posts. So I am guilty of removing some of your posts yes, but these are the posts where all you do is attack a member for no reason and add nothing to a conversation. I find it so laughable that you are here complaining that I have called you foolish when you have attacked members in worse ways. We have told you countless times that these posts break the rules about attacking and insulting people, yet you come back and do it again.

I am sure you realise that none of the mods or admin team are on a power trip, after all if we were I am sure that I would have banned you, rather than kept saying "ohhh well maybe this PM will make him stop being so aggressive". We informed you that if you keep attacking members and adding nothing to a topic the post will be removed, and yet you keep attacking people so we do as we have said and remove it. So where has this I am am being victimised mind set came from, we have given you every chance and every warning. I have tried my hardest in not following through with the threats of suspension, but you make it so difficult as you keep pushing and keep pushing. Why do you feel the need to be so aggressive towards people, and then claim that it is the mods that are in the wrong for telling you not to be.

It is a real shame as you were a good member, you posted helpful topics and helped members with problems. Now it seems you just come here to stir up trouble and insult people you don't know. I remember when you first joined the forum and I helped you for a while fix all the problems you had with your very badly coded site, you know the one the sliced up imageready one that was in so many tables and had 2 different heads and bodies...you seemed so sincere and so nice that I was happy to take time out to help you get it sorted for a job interview. Now it seems the more you learn, the less you want to share and the bigger you ego has gotten now that that you think you know what you are talking about.

The only one who is on a power trip here is you, well really it is more of an ego trip, as you think you are in the right and that it is ok for you to insult people but not right for someone to call you foolish HA! you need to seriously get over yourself, because if you think you have been friendly on here you are seriously deluded.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about. It's impossible for everyone to be included in a shortlist of just 7 people. It's not like there is any money being changed hands or legal requirements from the forum to have an official adjudicator like the National Lottery. At the end of the day this competition is a way for member's of the forum to chill out and have a laugh. It's not a big deal if you're not included – there's always next month to enter, so what's the rush?

If it's the whole "why wasn't I included?" side of the arguments that is getting everybody's nickers in a twist, then I suggest we have some sort of one liner or paragraph from/Ben/the mods/Jesus in reply to every single failed entry. At least that way you know why you failed to be entered and can do something about it for next month.

Seriously EggMan, something has changed with you. Where has all this aggression and random argumentative behaviour come from? This isn't the EggMan I remember when I joined back in February…

Can you not see why people are getting annoyed with you? There is a time and a place to make, dare I say it, false accusations about people. You should be sending these by PM to the mods, or talking to the person involved privately. Don't go around having a power-trip yourself, pointing fingers and shouting abuse at people because you feel short-changed. You ruin the threads and everything turns into a pointless argument or nit-picking about something completely superfluous.

The forum doesn't owe you anything, it doesn't owe anyone anything. I really don't see this rotten core of the forum, so I think you should take some time out and chill a bit before you say something you regret.

Please listen to what I've said, I'm not a mod and I have nothing to prove with anyone here. It would be a shame if you left the forum John.

Perhaps a good idea would be a separate thread dedicated to discussing WOTM sites. So, if you're going to enter the next month you could put the site there before-hand for any advice/ last minute fixes etc. Then, if your site isn't selected we can discuss possible reasons. It'd also be a thread to discuss the short-listed sites in maybe a bit more depth... as a man of words myself I'd like to hear little 'stories' behind the design.

It would be different to the main WOTM thread which is just brief "I entered" and "I voted" and different to the Website Review thread because this would be la creme de la creme (hopefully :D ) and not "you should rethink the tables!!!".

Just a thought because I sometimes feel the WOTM is a bit "tacked-onto" all the great nattering we do!

uh wow.. sorry guys I didn't realize that would branch out to an arguemnt.

Ohh no not your fault at all, I I just took the first post (I think) that didn't mention who they voted for and yours just happened to be that post. So not your fault, not cabbages fault either, it is just one of these things that happens.

Sorry if I made you think that your post started it all, I just wanted all the none voted for posts out of that section as it was unfair on those who did get shortlisted to have to go through all the arguing to see who voted for them.

At the end of the day chaps (and chappettes) its not the end of the world if you win or don't win WOTM. I've been on WDF for ages, and never even bothered to enter.

Its just for fun. ;)

Ditto. I entered several times and never got shortlisted, and then when I did enter I was beaten by some guy called Rob. B)

At the end of the day, I see it as a friendly contest. Friendly, yes, but still a contest. Contest, yes, but still friendly. :)

I am happy to see that a lot of people still see the website of the month as a friendly and fun little competition to enter and I hope people will keep trying and submitting their sites, as even if you don't win or get short listed at least you tried and can keep trying :)

Of course it should be friendly. If the prize were £1,000,000 in cash, maybe we would take it more seriously. :pp

Who'd have thought the "WOTM badge of honour" could spark so much heated debate??? Just goes to show how highly we all value it!

I'm just here for the beer

Ok I'm going to close this now.

If for any reason you think it should be reopened PM me the reason and I will reopen it :)
