I dont mean spam commenting, but genuine read-the-blog-and-add-valuable-comment type of blog commenting.

 

Directory submissions seem to be more of a short cut tool to get links out there on high pr paid directories.

If it's a genuine comment then why would there be a backlink?

Depends how how you go about them both. I wouldn't use either as a comprehensive backlink campaign. What I mean is, I wouldn't sit down and actively search for, comment on and count up how many blogs I have commented on.

 

I have a list of directories that have provided me with great traffic and great SERP movements but other than adding new clients to it, it's not something I religious monitor.

 

If I had to pick one, I think i'd go with directories. They can get you the most traffic and the most movement in the SERPs. But they have to be carefully selected and add value to your campaign

I wouldn't use either as a comprehensive backlink campaign.

It varies from client to client, and business to business.

 

You need to sit down with your client and talk about what they need and what the hope to achieve. Look at their business can come up with a solid keyword research along with why you've picked those keywords.

 

Then, using these, keywords look at Google and pick a competitor from the top, middle and bottom and then look into each one of these domains to determine what sort of links they have, their domain authority, number of links, number of c-class IP's blah blah.

 

With this, you can then determine what it is they actually need. So instead of going over kill and risking penaltys, you can then sit down and tailor a plan to their needs.

 

With all that information about each competitor, their links, where their from and, if you want to go deeper, look at what links their links are getting. This way you can uncover if there is anything fishy going. It's alright if their website is only getting 5 links, but those five pages might each have 5,000 links pointing to them,

 

Now you can either do exactly what your competitors are donig and then add your own spin on things or, if it's a mess of a backlink campaign, look at getting something more powerful together.

 

Link baiting, guest blogging, content creation, social media, directory submissions etc etc

I would go for both as there is a proven way that gives you better SEO. A little bit of this and that will do and from my experience the things change rapidly in SEO world and doing and believing in one method only is not good for a long term SEO.

I think that both are good, for creating the back-links.

How many decent blogs use do-follow links?

 

Even if you did find a decent blog with do-follow links specifically about your subject, surely it would be filled with comments and links, in which case the link juice is shared down to virtually nothing.

 

Plus the link would be down the bottom of the page, which is much more ineffective.

 

Plus once the blog moves on to the next subject your comment and link will be moved onto a page with no page rank.

Don't just focus on getting links from any old place. Make sure that your links are on sites actually found on Google for search terms your interested in.

I cannot agree with you, it depends on the blog. You are right some of the blogs order comments in a way that the firts comments are pushed by new ones to the bottom and finally (if there is a lot of comments) to the next page, but some blogs order their comments that the very first ones stay always at the top, so it is better to subscribe to that blog and when new article is posted you get a notiification to go there and comment the article.

 

If you searched properly you would distinct the best list of blogs which actually do their job right and are very useful for SEO. I woudn't call it a waste of time unless you really do not make notes or learn how blogs work.

Believe me, I have spent my fair share of time doing this and found that my time could be better spent elsewhere. I have not cracked page 1 for one of the most competitive search terms because I don't understand SEO and backlinks!

Those SEO tactics are not anymore working nowdays. If you want to have a good backlinks on your site why don't you consider doing some sort of content marketing. With the advent of Google Penguin and Panda update its not anymore on the quantity of the link but more on the quality of the links that you are building.

I think SEO has gotten harder and more complicated. The only thing I count on blog comments, and sig links in forums like these, is to get your website indexed not to improve its ranking.

Maybe SEO has got a little more complicated, but the principle is, and always will be the same, quality over quantity. Structure you site the best possible way, write the best possible content, and get the best possible backlinks! If you stick to these principles you can't go wrong!!!

 

I hear of so many people go down the route everyone goes down when learning and wasting their time with so many poor methods.

Why you are not choosing 50 fiftly.

 

Directory submission in high authority website and blog commenting only in relevant article will more effective in your case.
