Ideally, both words must be of the same width.

You could also check out Nevis. It's a free font that looks a lot like the font "Gotham" (one of my faves) when all caps.

Sorry couldn't help chuckling.

I noticed with google's "cantarell" which I'm using on a project that below a certain font size the bottoms of some of the letters looked weird on explorer. Also for some reason specifying the size in px not pt seemed to give a better result. So although I'm sticking with it because it looks purdy, I am aware that google isn't steering us into very good practises with this.

Try increasing the font size for an experiment and see whether it sorts the problem out, just as a matter of interest. Also - line height? Does increasing that help at all?

I fixed it. I downloaded a font editor and actually edited the font itself and then I used fontsquirrel and generated the new fonts. It seems to look better now. The lowercase "t" looks more like a "t".

Thanks a ton.

Hey,

Just thought I'd mention that I finally decided on a version of my logo that I like. I was inspired by "Lev" and his new idea. Thanks again. I had to re-do it 3 or 4 times to get it to look proper. I didn't use the fonts you suggested. I thought it looked a bit to unprofessional. Either way, I think I'll stick with this one.

Here it is:

Ah, but at least you admit it. There's a lesson to be learned here...

It was cheesy and obviously American.

That's a bit offensive. I too am an American designer and I don't know what's very obvious from that design that gives you the feeling its "American." To me it's just a color that uses the blue color which is seen in many different countries flag including the UK.

@alzer81: WOW! Just wow! Funny but WoW! But seriously everyone deserves a fresh start. Let's give him a chance.

To topic >> I feel that you should start over from a blank canvas. The design is too blue and when you have too many changes, that's a sign that there is something not right with the design. I would look on the web for inspiration first and think deeply on what I want for the site. Choose a nice (not so bright) color scheme and stick with it. For many designers, creating an outline is very useful. This way, you can stick to what you note down and not delve into another lane (fig of speech) when you see a "perty" color.

I second this. The advice I posted in my first couple of replies still stands. You keep tweaking little things and asking for critique when you still have the same problems as before.

What the **** are you talking about? I didn't rip off anyone or anything. I have all the source files to prove it. Don't write bull**** like that if you don't know what your talking about.

  • Author

I thought I found a forum where people wern't going to be assholes. I'm not talking about my design. That's constructive criticism. I'm talking about that canvas you just made of my picture. WTF is that? It's a picture of me... Get over it. Thanks a lot for bringing up bull**** that happened a while ago on another forum.

I'll clear it up right now... My last website was about 98% mine. I had a couple pictures on my site that I had used from a couple large wallpaper images. That was a while ago and once I realized that it was a bad idea, I took it right down. Seriously, is that such a huge crime that people have to come on here and diss the accomplishments. It took me 7 years to get to 250 sites and 250 clients and I'm proud of it... Every image, every picture, every color, everything on my site and my clients sites are original and made by me. I used 1 piece of an image that I have STRICT written consent to use and that's because I liked it so much which is a compliment to the original designer. I have every source file for every project I've ever done and I don't rip ANYONE off. Thank you Sazzad and Porkchops for your support. What happened to people just having a good time on the internet? I still can't believe that the webdev forums bull**** had to be brought up. Thanks for nothing guys. I can't wait until your in my shoes.

As for my design, I won't be posting this thread anymore. Sure, I'll start fresh, sounds good. I dunno if I'll even bother posting it when it's done. I don't like getting ripped on by people that don't give a **** and are just trying to kill someones rep for no reason.

Thanks to everyone that actually cares.

Take care.

250 clients?

I'd better fire up frontpage 2003, paint shop pro and head on over to pixel-2-life.com

Shut up man. You don't know me so just relax.

i cant seem to find the post!!

Why are you supporting them man? I supported you on a few of your posts for the good work you do... Again, I took a couple pieces of a wallpaper image. I realized it was wrong so I took it down. I got blasted for it by people that seem to have nothing better to do. I just got over a terrible disease and was on the verge of death. Before I go, I'd like to have fun and be creative. Not get blasted by a bunch of people that don't know me. Don't feed the fire...

You definitely need to develop a thick skin.

Design is a profession that is under-appreciated by the masses and involves a lot of critique to develop as a skill. You will hear a LOT of stuff you don't like. The trick is filtering between douchebaggery and honest feedback. Then you have to act on feedback appropriately without unnecessarily holding onto a sinking design. Ignore the people who are obviously out to harass you and make changes or restart when solid feedback is provided.

I agree with David. One thing you will encounter in your work of line is people judging you based on your previous experience. You just have to suck it up and say "he look that was a while ago, I have learned my mistake and moved on. If you want to help me, go ahead, otherwise, please leave it for those who does." Also don't take this as a downgrading experience; rather something that you will encounter more and more. Always keep in mind that some of the people that posted here can be exactly like your employers. That's just one downside of our profession.

Best of luck to you and we, well I, would love to see your next draft.

Also to add on, what alzer81 did was actually help you. By doing that with the image he actually loosened a lot of serious conversations. This post could have easily gone from critique this design to ban this user. What do you do when you're stressed about finding that one semicolon you missed in your code..? You take a second off and watch something funny to relieve the stress.

Oh one more thing, use the "EDIT" button instead of hitting "Add Reply." Remember that we're all professional designers and as designers we like to keep our things clean. Having 6 back to back posts by the same author is not too great (especially when its within 20 mins).

Now time meet up with my mates and grab some :drinks:

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I had to hear. Sorry to everyone, I was just having a bad day and I guess it pushed me a little to far. Thanks again guys and I guess I'll just take a load off. As for the next design, I'll post it when it's good to go.

As Sazzad would say, "hey look that was a while ago, I have learned my mistake and moved on. If you want to help me, go ahead, otherwise, please leave it for those who do." :)

To alzer81 // Sorry for freaking out. Instead of funny, I took it the wrong way. Sorry about that.

Yea, time for some :drinks: ...

Goodnight all.

Shut up man. You don't know me so just relax.

I'm only pulling your leg, people take me way to seriously but it's good to see that you've taken those guys advice. All the best with it though, mate

to be honest i dont give a flyin **** about anything so never take anything i say seriously. i barely take my own work seriously, nevermind anyone elses!think u got some nice design skills all the same.

That's not true. You seem to take your work seriously. I've noticed it on forrst. Speaking of which, when is the launch date for your new site design?

haha obviously i take pride in what i do but im not someone who is a serious person by nature. like to let things pass me by a little too often :) what site are ya talkin bout?

Hi mate

I do like the site, but have to agree with a few comments before.

First thing I would like to know is: did you, or a partner of you, make the art that comes by through the rotating banners? that is friggin cool art.

The first reply from itodd states that the site looks techy and outdated, at this moment I must agree that it is borderline techy and more like a game interface.

Although this look does definitely suits the graffiti-ish look achieved with banner art, I think it would look better with a bit less bevel&emboss.

Instead you could create more depth with more layers, almost like the graffiti is layered with arrows etc. (hard to explain what I am trying to say)

This might also remove the slight plastic look it has at the moment.

Another option would be to texturize the seperate elements and give them a tear and wear kinda look.

Maybe like it is blue painted metal that has been in a car crash.

I just started to learn HTML and CSS since last year and made my first site with tables and received lots of abuse on the forums.lol

Took me only a few days (and lots of help from this forum) to change it over to <ul>, and it made an incredible change in the look of my HTML.

All of a sudden it (the HTML part) looked organized and made much more sense to me.

go for it, get rid of the tables and introduce the lists.

Good luck

P.

btw. I am moving from Holland to BC in about one year and will looking for contacts, maybe we can work together sometimes.

Thanks a lot guys. I respect you all and I drum up creative ideas when I talk to creative people on respectable forums like this. I'm not just here for a quick critique... I'm looking to make friends and contacts that will be around when any of us need some help or ideas. Either way, I'm glad we cleared that up.

Thanks again. Also, how do you gain reputation on this forum? I'm still at 0 and I've helped out a few people and given advice, etc...

@Alan >> I meant that new personal site design you were working on. To be honest, I like that design better than your current one.

@Evan >> You gain rep by making a post that someone finds useful. When they do, they will click that little + button on the bottom right corner of your post. That adds up all the reps. But I would not trust the rep system much as it's quite new, and some misuse of it does occur (i.e. some users double register to give themselves + rep).

Ahh I see. That makes sense. I figured that's how it worked. I was just making sure. Thanks for the info. +1 for you! =0)
