How much would u charge for this?

Featured Replies

Hey

I am doin a site for a friend of mine and am just wondering how much i should have charged for a site of this standard: Site

I am still workin on it, still have to do a few pages but i just wanna see how much i should have charged for it. i really under charged i know, but cos it was a friend, i have also got caught in a vicious circle of doin sites for mates at a reduced rate as they hear how much my sites cost!!! Cheers

Yeah £250ish, that's a nice site, although two pages are missing and theirs a minor issues in chrome on the contact page (the content spills over slightly).

Theirs only 5 pages? But it also depends on what goes on behind the scenes, if you've had to say build a custom room booking system etc. these things bump costs up alot, but for a standard 5 page site £200-300 is my baseline. Depending what else is needed, costs just gets added ontop of that.

There is going to be an external booking engine added but i wont be building it. if thats all you cost for a 5/6 page website your serioulsy under quoting yourself or else your designs are the greatest! how long would it take u to build from scratch? cos if all you charge if 300 pound for a site u would want to have it designed and built in a couple of days max! i quoted myself €1000 for this site and i know for a fact that if i was to go web design compnay and asked them to quote for a 6 page brochure site they would charge from 1500 onwards! i suppose it all depends on how much you think ur designs are worth

Why do people charge so little, I would have charged £500 - £800 no matter if there is 5 or 25 pages.

You got to take into account the design and your hours.

  • Author

The design itself would cost £500 minimum, so I'd say £800.

thats more like it! i was getting worried with the first replies of 250! i would never do a site for 250 even if it only had 2 pages! it wouldnt be worth my while. i do these jobs on the side as i already have a full time job so its good to get extra cash. i was a little suprised to see so many low prices to begin with, thats the problem with designers, especially around this site, there are too many people churning out low end designs and asking for any kind of money for it, i see it too frequently around here, people calling themselves webdesigners and then struggle to even design a half decent portfolio website for themselves.

I could design that site and write any xhtml in 1/2 evenings. So £250 is more than enough for my time (about 10 hours)

there is soemthing very wrong if u reckon u could design that site and code it in 10 hours and your setill only charging 25 per hour? ur wastin a serious talent there if ur tellin the truth. can i have a look at some of you other sites that you have designed? a link to your portfolio? i wanna see your other work that you are doing for such a low cost, cheers

Believe what you want, I have no reason to lie and it most definately wont make me lose any sleep lol... I guess im just quicker than most

ah god. im not gonna get into this. ur design skills dont look up to much so if u think u could design my site in 10 hours all i can say is fair enough. maybe u could code a couple of pages in 10 hours but u wouldnt be able to design it

Thanks for the personal attack. Didn't think I'd stopped as low as too offend you! And im very glad you can form your opinion on all of two sites you've seen!

Green much?

i just think ur talkin crap sayin that u could design and code that in 10 hours. thats all. i have asked on a another design forum (which has a much higher standard of design as this place) and they have replied with sayin u should be asking for as much as €3000 for such a site. "A €450 designer probably doesn't know what he/she is doing, probably using a WYSIWYG editor, no thought about things like usability, accessability or findability. i suppose you usually get what you pay for (or in a lot of cases, less)"

I work as a professional PHP web developer. WYSIWYG editor. OK.

Your just an ignorant **** I didn't as much as criticise your design and you say "im talking crap". I come to this forum to help people with the knowledge I have not to put up with school kids like you. If you don't like the answers your given don't ask the question.

I won't post in this thread again!

It's quite a nice site - but £3k is quite excessive.

I would probably charge in the region of £1k for design and build. You have to remember that as a freelancer, you can't charge the £75 per hour that agencies will charge in; about £25/£30 per hour is the going rate for most freelancers.

Most designers/developers I know will charge a smaller amount up front for a basic 5 page site (£300-£400) and then make their money over the course of the year on updates etc...

Try not to jump down people's throats for their opinion either; just because you expected people to say "wow that's amazing; charge £2k" and they didn't is no reason for a personal attack. Skidz is an excellent coder who has helped me out on numerous occasions with different PHP issues and saying his design skills aren't up to much is a bit personal ;)

The key in business is not to charge a set price, but to really charge on a project by project basis taking everything into account.

Good luck

I think it's a bit rich to come on here asking what you should charge for a site and then slating everyone else for their own pricing opinions.

Terydinho's got great answers again.

If you ask someone "how much would YOU charge" then you get what you ask for.

Again, a design is only worth what someone will pay for it. You just have to balance that with what your time is worth. We've all seen quotes ranging from freebie portfolio-builders to hundreds of thousands for a single logo so there's always going to be a huge variation.

There can't be a 'wrong' answer to a subjective question and I wouldn't be surprised if someone paid £1,000 for this site. But then nor would I be surprised if they paid £250. Neither would I be surprised if a talented designer knocked it together in 10 hours or spent several days on it.

Take on board advice, feel free to discount or disagree with answers... but keep things on track eh?

I know I shouldn't and im being immature but:

Don't be such a **** yeah? You come here asking for OUR opinions and we give them, and get slated for doing it?

Maybe you should **** off to that other forum, you arrogant little rat...

hahahahahahahahahaha

Hillarious :)

I tell you what's hilarious, big headed pricks like yourself who consider themselves to be better than everyone else, MAYBE you do have more skill than others, maybe you don't. What gives you the right to treat the other kind users of this forum like something on the bottom of your shoe?

We've been in the printing and sign making industry for over 12 years, now I guess you also know something about those trades that we don't ye?

Lol

Told as it is!

Ok, come on now, lets get back to being sensible adults :)

Alzer; you can't come on the forum, ask such an open ended question and then start saying things like: "If you charge that little then you must be crap."

To some extent I agree with the whole, you get what you pay for. But websites don't take weeks to build when you design to brief and code semantically. Sites generally take under a week to complete now so at a decent hourly rate, prices of sites should not be exceeding £1,000 for a basic layout and a few pages being populated. That being said, for custom backend stuff, then you can start charging the big bucks.

Design is one thing, but quality coding is another and to be honest Alzer (no offense meant here), your site has 80-odd errors in html transitional. In my experience, any designer worth his salt knows how to validate a site in at LEAST transitional and usually 1.0 Strict. That is just my opinion and it is all subjective. But a nice looking site doesn't mean it is successful, a site that gets conversions and does what it is meant to do as a business tool is successful.

So on the back of that post, lets cut out the childish behaviour (all of us, me included!) and leave it alone now. Opinions on pricing are always going to be a big issue, but Wizely is right; you charge as much as the client is willing to pay, end of.

Good luck with the project

no i dont know anything about printing and sign making and i dont go around saying that i do know anything. im a web designer.... i dont pretend to be anything else

Just so you know, i ran the homepage through some tests.

Uh oh! WAVE has detected 12 accessibility errors

Cynthia says you fail both WAI and 508 guidelines

Your homepage fails xhtml validation.

W3C failed you on semantics because you're using h3's without h2's or h1's

And you shouldn't be using tables for non-tabular data.

So before you slate us for being crap, and not conforming to standards, get off your pedestal and lead by example.

if ya havent noticed th site is unfinished and all of this started by me tryin to find out how much someone would charge to a design of this standard, i still have alot of work on it to be done. if you can do this site in 10 hours, (from start to finish) i am serioulsy impressed! Thats all that i was saying....

I would charge around £400 for the site, then add some other charges when updating the site if the client needs the website updated.

And true the site doesn't validate but I guess that is okay if you are still developing the site.

For the first time in a long time I feel ashamed to be Irish.

You class yourself as an advanced web designer yet you can hardly spell and use capital letters correctly. I can understand a web design company maybe charging over €1000 for a site like that as companies like that have overheads and other employees to pay unlike freelance designers who work for themselves.

I'd charge €500 for that site and easily have it done in 2/3 days. That's just my price, maybe other designer will charge more and have extras like a CMS but everyone will vary. Any designer who'd take 3k for that exact site is just plain greedy.

I think everyone else here know's how far you'll go with that attitude :)

Could not agree more mate!

I get random quotes from web design "firms" in my area sometimes for projects I am working on and even the most simple design they'd want over $2,500 US dollars which is about £1500.

You people are completely undercharging yourselves! Don't undercut yourself. Seriously, I was doing that for so long making like £100-£200 per site then I realized all the time I invest into a project between meetings, and actual work, my service is worth a lot more.

Our work is worth something. Don't let the value of web design die.

This is not to say I don't make exceptions. But for a 5pg site I am charging at least £500-£600. And that's incredibly cheap compared to most design firms!

But like said above, don't get greedy.. but make sure you are getting paid what you're worth. (unless the bad economy is forcing lower prices.. sometimes that's the reality of it)

For a 5/6 page site with design of this standard I would charge approx. £750. That takes into account my creative input, my design time, my development time and a 10% buffer for the unforeseen.

If I was doing it for a friend, or to build up my portfolio, I would charge around £560.

A few suggestions:

• The current page button looks like it is missing, perhaps using a slightly darker regular button

• Vertically align the share and send buttons

• If you have designed the logo spend a bit more time on it, the typography isn't great, it is a bit of a non-event

• The side-scrolling arrows on the home page let the design down a bit

Nice design.

Oh what, Am I too late? Have I missed all the fun times?

Anyway, let's be realistic.

In a real world, your site is worth no more than £800.

And to sell it for £800 you're gonna have to spend time planning on a good sales speech!

It's nicely designed though, looks good.

I started sweating reading all that! lol.

I'd charge £695.65p plus VAT
