  1. Just noticed the code is messing up the layout of the page - for some reason the code cuts of after the images and disappears, not sure what's happening there to be honest. James' deals with images and I'm dealing with php files - well they could be html - can the code be adapted to load php/html files rather than images?
  2. Hi James - thanks for the contribution, but I've just tried out the notbansky code and it works. see this page as an example. http://www.colinandrews.org/home.php Now I need to ask - what's the easiest way to get them displayed in two columns instead of one?
  3. I don't have the images in a database - they're all in individual html files within a folder on the server.
  4. ooh - cheers - I'd love to give that go right now and let you know if it works but can't see anywhere in the code where the image information is - how does it know where to grapb them from?
  5. I just found this info on another forum if it helps: It make sense to me, but as I don't write PHP I wouldn't know where to start.
  6. I have issues doing table based email newsletters now and I started in web design when tables were the way to go when building sites - that is what I was taught and learnt in my first job. I can't quite believe that's what we used to do. CSS was completely ignored. I know how you feel though - count yourself lucky that you actually do know what you're doing. I started off not knowing anything and learning on the job. I would spend hours trying to figure stuff out and working late to learn and catch up with the current web team, I was scared to ask questions and too timid to say I didn't understand something - I'm not liek that now - I'm more than happy to admit my weaknesses and seek help when I need it. I was convinced everyone thought I was a complete numpty. I found my niche though and excelled at Flash animation and in the end spent three years mostly animating - it was great. They're throwing things at you as they need to know where your skill strengths lie. Do the best you can do and don't be embarrassed admitting that you have no idea how to do something. That's normal - you don't have the experience right now. If you go ahead with an attitude like 'I don't know how to do that, but I can figure it out' then you're on the right track. Don't be scared to ask questions or pull one of your colleagues aside to run ideas past them - I'm sure you've been hired to be part of a team, so teamwork is essential - in time you'll be delegating tasks to other folk to lighten your load. Good luck - you might feel like a bunny in the headlights at the moment, but that will soon pass!
  7. I want to display 6 image links on a page - 2 columns of three - like this: Basically they are links to projects, so I've created a number of html files which contain an image link and these all sit within a folder called 'featuredwork'. There are 10 projects so far, but I will be adding more projects in the future. How can I make it so that the page displays a random selection of projects each time someone visits the page? I'd also want to make sure that there was no repetition within the display, so no products were duplicated. Can anyone help - not sure if this is a PHP or Javascript thing. Thanks E
  8. okay - by adding your version of the code I get the text 'No related posts' for every post I visit. Now what?
  9. I've just installed the YARPP plugin on my blog to display related posts in my single.php - i.e. on the actual posts. I'm using one of the templates provided that utilises the wordpress 'post thumbnails' functionality which I use. The code within this template is: <?php /* Example template for use with post thumbnails Requires WordPress 2.9 and a theme which supports post thumbnails Author: mitcho (Michael Yo****aka Erlewine) */ ?> <h3>Related Posts</h3> <?php if ($related_query->have_posts()):?> <ol class="related-posts"> <?php while ($related_query->have_posts()) : $related_query->the_post(); ?> <?php if (function_exists('has_post_thumbnail')): if (has_post_thumbnail()):?> <li><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?><br /><?php the_title_attribute(); ?></a></li> <?php endif; endif; ?> <?php endwhile; ?> </ol> <?php else: ?> <p>No related posts.</p> <?php endif; ?> My problem is that if there are no related posts the text 'No related posts.' does not display. Anyone know why? Here's an example post with no related posts: http://www.milomade.co.uk/blog/2010/04/april-showers/ I've messed about with the PHP and whatever I do breaks the site - I'm crap at PHP, so would appreciate it if one of you experts out there could let me know if there is anything wrong with the above code and how to fix it. Thanks E
  10. I'd like to add this ning button to my blog, but it's packed to the brim with invalid code - anyone know how to make it valid? <embed src="http://static.ning.com/socialnetworkmain/widgets/index/swf/badge.swf?v=201003221300" FlashVars="backgroundColor=0xFFFFFF&textColor=0x990000&config=http%3A%2F%2Fzibbet.ning.com%2Fmain%2Fbadge%2FshowPlayerConfig%3Fxg_source%3Dbadge%26size%3Dsmall%26username%3Dbsswd5i9it5m" width="250" height="104" bgColor="#FFFFFF" scale="noscale" allowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"> </embed><br /><small><a href="http://zibbet.ning.com">Visit <em>Zibbet's Community</em></a></small> I've gone in and changed all the '&' to '&' and that's about it. Any help much appreciated. E
  11. I might give that a go - not now though as I'm about to go to bed...it's a bit difficult as I have to work on the live website and don't want to mess it up.
  12. It's a wordpress site and the logo is within the header.php file...so it couldn't go in the template.
  13. I kind of want to do it dynamically so that it doesn't matter how many sub-pages my client adds the logo on the sub-pages will always be logo number 2 - going by your suggestion I could just stick with what I have and do this: <?php if (is_page('5')) { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number2.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } elseif (is_page('292')) { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number2.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } elseif (is_page('100')) { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number2.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } elseif (is_page('500')) { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number2.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } elseif (is_page('300')) { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number2.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } else { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number1.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } ?> And I would have to add a new elseif for each new page once my client has created it. I don't wnat to have to do this and just want to have some code in place that would deal with all teh child pages of the main page - that way I just need to put the code in place and she can go and create as many pages as she wished without having to worry about coming back to me and getting me to add more code. maybe it's not possible.
  14. Ok I've manage to figure out the logistics of the PHP: <?php if (is_page('5')) { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number2.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } elseif (is_page('292')) { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number2.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } else { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number1.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } ?> but is there a way to say that all child pages of of the page with ID=5 to show logo number 2 - having to go in and add all the subpages manually is not a great way to do it. I've tried using 'parent-pageid-5' which is what appears in the body class but this doesn't work. Anyone got any ideas on how to improve this?
  15. OK I need to adjust this code now: <?php if (is_page('5')) { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_number2.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } else { ?> <img src="/assets/logo_logo_number1.gif" alt="alt here" /> <?php } ?> to include a further set of pages as the page with with ID of 5 that shows logo number 2 will now have some subpages and I want these subpages to use the same logo. I can't do this by the ID number as I don't know how many pages the client is going to create so not sure how to do this - is there a way to add some code to say the child pages of this parent need to use the same logo. Do I need an if, else if, else sort of thing. Can someone help as I have no idea where to go from these basics. Ta E
  16. screen scraping? is this some sort of new geek fetish I'm not aware of? tell me more...
  17. will digest this later - got to take the dog out in the howling wind / rain / sleat / snow - I may be some time...
  18. stumbling already - do I just put all this within opening and closing php tags? also how do I finish this off after I've listed all four seasons: } else ...etc. and where does this go: $yourRandomImage= $myImages[array_rand($myImages)]; echo $image22; and why does it have echo $image22; at the end?
  19. Wow - super fast response - I'll go and try this out now. Thanks E
  20. looking for something like the ones on these sites: http://www.lottery.co.uk/results/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/lottery/
  21. Does any one know of a widget or script that would enable me to display the latest UK National Lottery results on a website? I've been Googling and not getting any useful results. Thanks E
  22. hi rallport - thanks for that - does that involve randomisation or the display of just one image? I need the images to randomise and there are 10 images for each season.
  23. or maybe something could be added to the rotate.php file to make it do the randomisation according to season?
  24. I did a site for a client years ago and the header images are all in one folder and are randomised using this attached random.php file: rotate.php All pretty simple...but...The client wants the images to change depending on the saeson so, as the site was built ages ago when I was less savvy about dynamic content, I go into the site every season and switch the images in the folder to be the Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter ones. It's a bit of a pain and even though I get paid to do this by the client I think it would be better if this was now made automatic. I wondered if I could use something like this: <img src="image/<? echo(date('F'))?>.jpg" /> and adapt it somehow so that instead of picking out images named by month it would picks out images named by saeson and also randomise them. Can anyone help as I'm a total novice when it comes to PHP. Thanks E
  25. eh? how would that work - intrigued.
