  1. At the moment I am undergoing a project for my father in law; renovating the vintage car restoration he made (he is now 64 so a good attempt on his part!) I am teaching myself web design and thought this would be a good challenge as there are a lot of improvements that can be made: Ashridge Automobiles original site Here is my current design: What I have done so far! There are a few things I would like help in sorting: the footer on the index page doesn't appear in a straight line at the bottom left hand side of the page like the rest of the site The gallery for each car model works correctly on IE (appears horizontally) and Safari (appears vertically) but goes completly wrong in Mozilla. How can I make this work consistently for all? See the CSS code - #photostrip In IE the site appears magnified and the navigation bar gets along to the next line. How can I make this the size of the other browsers and make the navigation bar fixed dead centre? As of yet my contact form doesn't "submit" will it depend on the server accepting php script? I will work on this after the other problems though. The html for the main index page. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta name="generator" content="HTML Tidy for Linux (vers 1 September 2005), see www.w3.org" /> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>Ashridge Automobiles | Bedfordshire</title> <link href="ashridge.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <style type="text/css"> /*<![CDATA[*/ <!-- .style3 {font-size: 14px} .style7 {font-size: 12px} .style8 {color: #000000} --> /*]]>*/ </style> <meta name="keywords" content="vintage cars, restoration, jaguars, british sport cars, PVT, Pst Vintage Thoroughbred, Ashrdge Automobiles, Automobiles, Leighton Buzzard, Befordshire, Barn finds" /> <style type="text/css"> /*<![CDATA[*/ p.c3 {visibility:visible;} object.c2 {width:400px;height:262px} p.c1 {text-align: left} /*]]>*/ </style> </head> <body> <div id="container"> <div id="header"><img src="images/ashridgebanner.jpg" alt="Ashridge Automobiles Ltd" /></div> <div id="navigation"> <ul> <li><a href="ashridgeindex.html" target="_parent">Home</a></li> <li><a href="britishsports.html" target="_parent">British Sport & Saloon Cars</a></li> <li><a href="vintagepvt.html">Vintage & PVT</a></li> <li>Projects & Barnfinds</li> <li>Riley Spares & Automobiles</li> <li>Restoration Services</li> <li>Wanted</li> <li><a href="contact.html">Contact Us</a></li> </ul> </div> <div id="content"> <p class="c1"><img src="images/welcometitle.jpg" alt="Welcome" /></p> <p class="c1">Ashridge Automobiles is based in the South of Bedfordshire. 2. Hi, I've been searching all day for a suitable gallery but have found they are all a bit too flashy for what I need. I would like a gallery with small thumbnails along the bottom that enlarge to an image above that. Ideally with a white background and I would like it to keep open on that page. The site is for my father in laws vintage car restoration site so it needs to be simple and doesn't need to be overly impressive. I need it to advertise the cars on sale and each car has about 4/5 images. Any help would be appreciated!
  3. I wondered if anyone knew of a good step by step tutorial for beginners on how to make a collapsable panel nav bar in Dream Weaver 8. All the ones I have found online so far are for CS3 and I dont have the Insert - Spry Widget (well I don't think i do) Any help appreciated
  4. I like the banner but I think the three columns should be equal rather than the left column starting at the top then the other two being placed under the "welcome" text. Maybe if you didn't have the Welcome to Wentwood DH there and had all the columns coming from the top. Keeping a space between each column is nice to show the background graphic. Maybe making the columns have the same height? Unless it is meant to go down like that. Also the contact form - email address field and the verification fields come out longer than they should. I am using Safari to browse.
  5. That looks like a col validator although I tried to register on the site and couldn't due to a mysql error. Is this because it is still under development? If so then I look forward to seeing its results once completed
  6. Thanks for the quick replies I have replaced the welcome banner with a smaller version. At first I wanted it larger as a big "welcome" to the page but now it has been pointed out I agree with it being smaller I too feel that the side bar just goes down too much, especially as it is blank for most of the main div. There is still something about it that niggles me for improvements. My mind goes a bit blank though Glad you like the colours :-) it has changed so much from the horrible blaring orange I began with to a bright blue to now a nice simple white! Glad I got some sense lol
  7. I have only just look so don't know how it looked before hand but I think it looks really professional. It has a personal edge to it which is different to other sites advertising the same. At first I wondered what the grey space in the middle was, but then the photo slide show loaded up.
  8. I have just finished the design of my first website. It is a personal one for my music. I am happy with the designs and the minimal feel to it so don't want to change that. I feel that the home page needs something else. Because I don't have constant news like some artists might it's hard to pack it out, but is there any suggestion to what I could add? Or any idea to improve the lay out without changing it too much? Any ideas for extra content I could add would be cool, or any widgets that can be easily added. Just would be great to make any improvements My website
  9. I'm in the process of designing a music fan zine site for my friends. She wants to include CD/Gig reviews. Instead of me having to type the reviews into the html each time (which will be almost impossible when I go away for 6 mths in August) I'd like to have a system where she can log in and enter the reviews her self. I will try and have it set up so she will have the html/css files and access to the server whilst I'm away but also thought a logging in system could work well. My knowledge is reasonably basic and I'm just about understanding anything past html and css so it is always a learning process. My friend has used Drupal on his page so the band can log in (or anyone reg'd on the site) to leave a comment which appears on the front page almost like a blog. I'm not too sure how towork with Drupal but is this the direction I should be heading?
  10. I have just tried uploading my files to a directory for the first time. I initially have my own personal page reg'd with 123 reg and now that site is up and running I understand how to upload etc and have no problems (once i got my head around it) Coincidentally after purchasing my website I won a year of hosting with Ecowebdesign so I decided to use that for the website my friend wanted me to build her. I designed a very basic home page to test I can upload it OK. I tried doing this and I get the error 404 again. I got this previously with my first site but got a friend to help and its fine now. When I first uploaded to 123 reg the directory was blank. The directory with Eco has folders already there, one being a "public-html". This contained a index.html that displayed "welcome to your new website" in the browser untill I replaced it which I have. The directory structure is as follows: Directory/ .bash_logout .bash_profile .bashrc .gtkrc index.html (i have uploaded this to replace their original) logs rockitzine.css (my upload) public_html/ Images/ (images I have uploaded) I have no idea what all the bash files are for, or why there is the public html folder, i uploaded my index into that folder too but it made no difference. I thought it would be easy the second time round obviously not Please help if you can Holly
  11. I tried reading the link that you gave me bluedreamer but its really hard for me to understand. I don't know where to paste the right code, where to put it in the html, where to attach the js. Anymore help would be appreciated Really really stuck!
  12. OK I've tried looking around. I have created the rss feed javascript that wordpress generated for me by going to "export" Now I have this what are the simple steps to getting it up onto my webpage and running? Much appreciation for any help!
  13. Ok thats cool :-) However not the cool bit about javascript, I need to learn it but when reading my text book earlier I may as well've been reading german lol But it can be done which is the important thing! I might need future help but I'll see what I can manage for now :-)
  14. Hi, For the front of my web page I would like to have a "news" section in the form of a blog. A friends website has this where they log in to post a new entry and it comes up with the date and time it was left. A Citizen Above Suspicion Website In a couple of months I will be going away for 6 months so although I wont be able to do any new music or input that much I would like my website to be reasonably active throughout this time. I need something that I can log into around the world but is linked and will update onto my webpage. Is there anything out there? I got an account with word press but cant see how this works with want I want yet. Are there any other "widgets" out there that I can add to keep my website updated whilst being away? Thanks, Holly
  15. Cheers, that works now :-) TO make the thumbnails appear would I need to place a thumnail img link?
  16. Thanks for the help :-) It works now apart from the "close" gif from the gallery doesnt show up. I can see where the previous and next gifs are meant to show on the lightbox css but couldnt spot where close was meant to go? This is it so far Gallery
  17. Oops sorry, the actual site can be viewed at www.projectlumino.co.uk/gallery.html Here is the html for the gallery page with the scripting pasted in as the instructions said. Maybe there could be a problem with the linking of the lightbox css? Just under the friends list of the Album div there is a huge list of code but its my Last fm widget. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" 18. Hi, I found the link to the Lightbox2 gallery on here and really want to use it on my website. I tried following the instructions on the site but as a complete beginner it still doesn't work. I copied the first three lines of javascript into the header like it said. I copied all of the downloaded files to my website folder (js, css & images) these have also been uploaded onto my server. This is the problem I had though: But I don't understand what the answer means It would be great if someone could give me a step by step guide for someone who has only just started web design!
  19. I couldn't view the previews when I followed the facebook link. But not being able to collapse the mini feed link annoys me. I know saying "I don't want people to see what I'm doing" is a silly thing to say when they could if they really wanted to check open it. But now the first thing people will see on my profile is every little minute thing I've done on Facebook in the last week. I can't see how it benefits the design? I do really hate the amounts of applications people can have. Sometimes it's ridiculous!
  20. I recently bought 2 books to get me started: "Collins - How to create a Website" (£10.99) and the big "9-in-1 Web Design for Dummies" (£22.99) The small collins book was great, it was small enough for me to carry and read on the train to work and everything was explained in an easy to understand step by step way. It didn't delve into too much detail but taught the basics of html & css. Also providing info on how to make the most of your site, visuals and content etc. The huge 400+ pages of the Dummies book provides an awful lot of info, but it's hard to know where to start. It will be handy when I start to learn scripting as the smaller book doesn't touch on it and when I start studying it will make a great reference book. So for price and beginners get the Collins book :-)
  21. I've made a slight adjustment to it now. I changed the width of the wrapper to 834px so now the album div stays in place in the browsers. Now in Mozilla everything is fine apart from the header image not showing (but the album image shows fine) and in Safari the lay out is ok and both images show but it isn't picking up any css on the font style or color background

  23. Here is the CSS /* CSS Document */ @charset "utf-8"; /* CSS Document */ body { color:#000000; font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; background-color:#FF9933; margin-left:250px; margin-right:250px; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; padding:0px; } h1, h2, h3, h4 {color:#000000; font-weight:bold; text-transform:capitalize; font-size:12px;} h1 { margin:0px; font-size:18px; } h2 { margin:0px; } #wrapper { width:750px; margin:auto; background-color:#FFFFFF;} #header { padding-left:0px; padding-right:0px; padding-bottom:0px; padding-top:0px; } #navigation li { display:inline; font-size:14px; } #main { background-color:#FFFFFF; float: left; margin:0px; width:657px; } #album { float:right; margin:0px; width:175px; background-color:#FFFFFF; }
  24. I've been having this trouble since I started this website. I posted on another forum I use and even with the code they tried for me that worked for them. It still didnt work for me. Nothing is online just yet but will be when I get a basic design finished and the content finialised. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" /> <title>Welcome to Project Lumino</title> <link href="210508.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> </head> <body> <div id="wrapper"> <div id="header"> <h1><img src="headerlarge.jpg" alt="Project Lumino Site" width="834" height="107"/></h1> </div> <div id="navigation"> <ul> <li>Home </li> <li>Biography </li> <li>Gallery</li> <li>Music</li> <li> Merchandise </li> <li>Links</li> </ul> </div> <div id="main"> <h1> </h1> <h1>News</h1> <p><strong><u>18.03.08</u></strong> <p>textextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextexttextextextetxtetxtetxtetextex extextextextextexttextextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextexttextextextetxt txtetxtetextextextextextextextexttextextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextex </p> <p>textextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextexttextextextetxtetxtetxtetextex extextextextextexttextextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextexttextextextetxt txtetxtetextextextextextextextexttextextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextex textextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextext</p> </div> <p>textextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextexttextextextetxtetxtetxtetextex extextextextextexttextextextetxtetxtetxtetextextextextextextextexttextextextetxt txtetxtetextextextextextextextext.<br /> </p> <p>Hope all is well and give me any feedback you can on my new song!!!</p> <hr /> <p><u><strong>06.01.08</strong></u></p> <p>I am now hand making the "Waking Up" album. 25. I am new to these forums and one of the reasons I joined in the first place was because I cant get my page to open in a browser the same way it opens in Dreamweaver 8. This is how it looks in Dw: This is how it looks in Safari: None of the CSS for the font has picked up. It is in default Times New Roman. The "album" div to the right side has moved out of place. The orange background no longer shows up. This is how it looks in Mozilla: The header image doesn't show. The album Div is misplaced. However the orange background and font style show fine. I am using a Mac, I dont know if that would make a difference? Is there some code I need to include? Help!!
