Both extensions .jpg and .jpeg work, but if your image is saved as banner.jpg, you need to use the same extension in your coding. You used banner.jpeg . Maybe that's why you can't see the image.

I would use Wordpress, because it is fairly easy to set up and can be integrated into an existing site. There are lots of tutorials on the internet if you want to go this route.

Thanks to both of you for your constructive suggestions. This is still a work in progress, and I will definitely try to incorporate your advice. I am going to be adding content, my portfolio and a contact form in the next few days, and then I will post an update here.

I am kind of nervous to ask for a critique of this site, because the last time I posted a site for review, I got an 'ouch' and not too many positive comments from a different forum. The trouble is, the longer I work on a website, the better I like it, because I become blind to its faults. Well here goes ... I finally put together a portfolio website. The home page is pretty much finished, and the other pages are missing their content so far, and the finishing touches on the navigation still need to be coded. I wanted to get away from the ever present rectangle just for fun. I think it could work. I showed the site to my 17 year old son, the budding graphic artist, and he had a whole list of things he didn't like about it, and thought I should stick to the tried and true, but before I give up I would like your kind but honest opinions. I'm not exactly sure what you are doing by setting the footer position in your CSS, but if you have a footer div in the html document at the bottom of your page, just before </body>, it will always stay at the bottom of the page, no matter how long the content is. You don't need to position it in CSS.

I have never done a Photoshop mockup before. I have always gone straight to the html/css stage but this latest project is a difficult one for me. There is one banner in shades of blue that must be placed on the home page and I can't seem to build a decent colour scheme around it. I tried one that I found on Kuler, but I'm not so sure it works. Any advice on colour choice, or anything else related to my mockup would be greatly appreciated. The text is filler and I know it is a bit cramped. I can fix that, but what else can I do to help the design?

My first impression was wow. Very unique in its look ... I do like the boxes. The only suggestion I have is related to the solid grey background colour of the content area. It look a bit out of place and would probably be better if you use the same background image that you have covering the body so that it is more consistent.

I wouldn't have believed this was your first website! I like the choice of colours. However, I am viewing it in IE8 and the Google ads are sitting on the left hand side way below the bottom of the site.

I love the look - very neat, clean and inviting. The only problem I have with the site is that when I clicked on the title of one of the articles to view the article, instead of going to a page where I could read the article, I was taken to a single page with the article's title where there was a message to click on the title of the article to view the article.

I am university educated, but in other areas (French, then education, then math), but in the area of web design and development, I am self taught (XHTML, CSS, basic principals of design, Fireworks, Photoshop, Flash, starting Wordpress themes,..). But I am getting a bit tired of how slow it is to pick up these things by myself and how many gaps there are in my learning still ... PHP, Javascript, business principles, e-commerce, etc. So I want to go back to college and study web design and development in a classroom setting with a curriculum and assignments to do for a change. I have applied to a local college for a two-year program starting in September.

I just finished designing a Wordpress blog for someone with my own theme, having had no prior experience with PHP, mySQL or Wordpress and I used the WPdesigner.com tutorial. It was explained step-by-step very clearly (I just skipped over the parts that went back to the basics of HTML and CSS and just used the Wordpress part) and soon I had a blog up and running without much trouble at all. It was so well explained that I was actually able to go back and do some changes to the organization of the blog and find the correct lines to edit without a hitch. I would recommend that tutorial for anyone who wants to do their first Wordpress theme from scratch.

The site is very nice. I love the colourse and the layout. I only noticed one thing that is detracting a bit from the overall experience. It looks like the image for wedding makeup is stretched horizontally, so that it is a bit distorted, almost like the original image was not in the same proportion as the other images, and it was just stretched to fit.

How many jobs do you take on before you find you have enough, and put the next ones on a 'waiting list'. For example, if you had three new clients this week (for a new website to be done from scratch), would you give a fourth client a start date two weeks from now? I have not done enough sites at once to really know how much is too much.

For the most part I like the site ... nice colours, interesting lines. But I find the round images just under the navigation way too large, so there is no content visible above the fold to give me a taste of what the site is offering. Try toning down this area a bit, because it doesn't really add alot to the site, except for some visual interest.

I have been wondering the same thing. If emailing has resulted in a few responses, maybe you can modify your approach there to be more succcessful. For example, have you analyzed why the companies that did respond to your emailing campaign lose interest? Did they change their mind about having a website, was the pricing the problem, ...? Maybe there is a special technique that can be used to convince a prospect to use you, after they have made the initial contact.

I really, really like the site. It is striking in its appearance ... simple, with really nice colour choices and easy to use. The only thing I can suggest is that you redo the content in the paragraph describing your services on the home page. The language needs to be corrected and polished somewhat to bring it up to the professional standard of the rest of the page.

I've never used inline styles, but aren't the rules the same as for external style sheets? Isn't there supposed to be a semi-colon ( ; ) between the two styles? bgcolour="black"; text="00008B"

I would like to print my own, but I tried printing on card stock with my printer and the printing smudged. My printer is an HP colour laserjet. Is that the sort of printer that should do the job? I just don't want to have to deal with waiting a few weeks only to find out that the company I choose has delivered me several hundred poor quality cards.
