rather than explain, let me show you? would that be better? check out: http://www.problogger.net/archives/2006/09...-blog/#comments i put a 'content rich' comment on darren rowse's blog. he's one of the biggies in the blogging world. in case you're wondering his alexa ranking is 3,106 (in the entire universe of websites, he's ranked 3,106. yahoo is #1, and my blog www.whoisandrewwee.com is ranked 162,000 or so). anything ranked 100,000 or lower will be getting crazy amounts of traffic. His google page rank (PR) is 7/10. anything that is PR5 or higher will get spidered (site indexed) by google on a daily basis. PR 7 means the spiders come multiple times a day. Again this is huge. let's assume conservatively that Darren gets 20,000 visitors/day (i dont know but it's be a conservative UNDERestimation in my books). let's say 0.1% of his visitors read his blog, see my blog comment and think, 'gee, this andrew wee chap sounds interesting. i wonder if his blog is any good. they click through and land on my blog' so let's see 0.1% of 20,000 (definitely possible) so i could be getting 200 extra visitors a day? now just imagine what you could do with an extra 200 visitors a day. additional google adsense? pitch design services their way.... the possibilities are endless... there's a design blog at: http://coffeebanana.blogspot.com/ i dont think it's particularly good (i could do better), but it'd give you an idea of the potential of creating more buzz for your business. Evie, i feel your slightly offbeat personality could really come through in a blog and pull lotsa traffic in. but i think a large part of my success has to do with having a concrete strategy in place. and at the risk of sounding like i'm excessively harping about it, secretblogweapon.com is key to that. i'm also working with an australia-based designer to launch some strategys to bring his online endeavours to the next level.

Hi Evie, good that you're discovered social bookmarks. i use them to generate a lot of organic traffic to my blogs. besides spurl, the most famous and prominent is del.icio.us there is also furl, blinkbits, digg (also a biggie), there's about 36 different social networks. besides online bookmarking, you can expect thousands of visits per hour if you're ranked in the top 50 or top 100 of the bookmarks.

Hi Evie, if you head to http://www.iwebtool.com/ and use some of the tools, you might find the Google PR predictor to be use and the backlink checker. a two way link is where i include a hyperlink to your site and you include one back to me. hence it's 'two way' a backlink is where the link is in a single direction. hence it's a backlink. backlinks rank higher in terms of Google PageRank (on the assumption that you would normally link to high authority sites, who might not necessarily link back). the higher the Google PR, the higher you will rank on the SERPs (search engine results pages). the top 3 results for any category will get the lion's share of the results. hence you'd want to dominate the SERPs as much as possible. for the search terms 'secretblogweapon' and 'andrew wee' i'd dominate the serp. just imagine if you'd be among the top 3 results for graphic design, web design, etc... you'd likely be getting tens of thousands of results per hour. just a 1% conversion rate into clients would keep you pretty busy....

i use 3 browsers in the course of my work, and they all serve different functions. mozilla firefox is my general workhorse. i like the fact that it's fast and supports plug-ins like greasemonkey. i have a browsing acceleratr (fasterfox), a blogging plugin (performancing for firefox), google notebook (for taking notes), search status (which displays alexa rank and google PR). i also use colorzilla which is a color picker (useful for grabbing CMYK, RGB codes off web pages). you can google for these plug-ins easily. Internet explorer: i use it for alexa and some websites which are obstinate and refuse to play with firefox... Flock: my newest browser (available from flock.com), it's geared towards bloggers and has photo upload and other features. i guess i'm used to my ftp client, so i'm still uploading images the old way. but i think for newbies this'll be a cool blogging tool. so like the charmed ones say, use the power of 3.

from your question, it's not immediately clear if you're asking what URL to register, OR which domain registrar to use. here's a quick and dirty reply to both. 1) domain name: you need to ensure your keyword is in your URL if you'd like to attract organic traffic. hence logos, designs, graphic design should be in there if you'd like to attract that type of traffic. you can go to inventory.overture.com and enter your keywords, it'll show you the number of searches done per month. then you can go to google and google for the same keywords. this gives you the RS ratio (results - search). you'd ideally want about 5000 searches and a RS ratio of 300 or less. this is basic SEO, but if you want more advanced stuff, there are a number of products to look at. --- 2) domain name registrar. i have a major problem with godaddy. i have heard from a number of internet marketers during periods of product launches, when you might have 100,000 visitors or more a day, godaddy automatically assumes you either are the target or the initiator of a DoS (denial of service) attack. in some cases, i've heard they either freeze your domain, or take it back. either way, will lose you quite big amounts of revenue. although i have about 20 domains at godaddy, i'm gradually migrating them to namecheap.com this is the URL and their coupon codes: namecheap Yaffaspecial - $0.90 off domain registration and renewal. net price: 7.98 MORE4LESS - $0.89 off .com domain registration. net price: 7.99

if they come with your host, they're accessible via cpanel or fantastico. i think one of them's phpformgenerator or something similar.

all my web traffic is organic or orginates from search engines. i regularly get about 250-300 visitors a day and on good days it can go up to 400. i use: blog commenting forum posting directory submissions i think so far my blog has been the best traffic generator though. i widely distribute my RSS feeds and consciously do social bookmarking at del.icio.us, furl, my yahoo, my google, etc.

i never have a sandbox issue. i talk to one of my contacts who have a PR5 ranking and get them to link to me. my content get spidered and my pages are indexed within 24 hrs. if you use the tool at iwebtool.com for the google PR predictor, you will see that my 3 month old domain www.whoisandrewwee.com is scheduled to go from PR0 to PR4 during the next updates. (it sometimes fluctuates between PR3 and PR4 but that's an anomaly).

going by the traffic i'm getting, it definitely helps to be indexed by the search engines. sitemaps make it easier to spider your site. i dont know what else to say aside from the fact that it works!

i hear good things about zen cart. i'm not sure about shopping cart architecture though. would you use it with 1shoppingcart (i think it's a shopping cart, so likely not) or 2co (2checkout)? or do you interface it with a payment provider. are there any FAQs available? i've been looking at this area, but am not sure how to proceed

Hi Evie, i enjoyed visiting your site. 1) cool music 2) that bouncing snowball game (i got a high score of 20!) what's not to like! a suggestion: you might want to include a privacy policy on your site. for purposes of SEO (search engine optimization) google ranks sites with about us, privacy and site map pages higher. i can see you've your meta tags in place too. i think at this stage more traffic generation strategies will bring you more referrals. maybe submitting design articles to article directories like articlecity.com? your google PR3 is pretty good and alexa of 630,000. i think more backlinks will help bring you to the next level. you may also wish to use a blog to draw traffic. i am getting about 250-300 visitors to my 3mth old blog. you can check out secretblogweapon.com, that's my primary tool for traffic generation. cheers!

hey thoma, a good start. you might want to do better adsense blending to get better clickthrough rates. i have experimented with some new placement techniques in my blog (you can click on my latest blog posts) and have seen a small spike in clickthrough rates. i think at the google adsense logout screen there is an adsense optimization video by one of the google guys. look at: https://www.google.com/adsense/tips

goodness, i guess in a designer forum it's reasonable to expect that all the sites would look really good. if you're looking at generating internet income on a long term basis, i'd recommend registering your own domain name and getting your own webhosting though. it builds your corporate brand and inevitable free hosting comes with it's own disadvantages, possibly their own advertising, limits on server space, bandwidth, etc. plus since you never own the domain, it's a pity if you build up the Alexa ranking and Google PageRank there and it still ultimately belongs to freewebs. cheers,
