Hi everyone,

I wonder if it does really help in getting our sites indexed by major search engine, especially the google? I mean, it is real hard task to get as many pages in our sites to be indexed by those search engines, and I read that by submitting sitemap, it could somehow speed-up or helps the search engine's bot to crawl our site and index those pages.

 

So, is it really the case? I have been submitting sitemaps for several of my sites, and yet only see less than 20pages being indexed by google especially.

 

Any enlightenment?

going by the traffic i'm getting, it definitely helps to be indexed by the search engines.

It certainly helps. The SE bot can spider your site in more details once u submit the sitemap

You can manually submit your site to google also.

Do you actually submit your sitemap to the search engines? Or just wait for the spiders to do their crawling? I've only ever submitting my index page to google and the like.

emm..thanks for your kind inputs. But after alomost 5months I submitted my sitemaps for all my sites, I could only see that the pages being indexed are so little! I keep updating my sitemap at least once every 2weeks, but it doesn't seems to help much.

when i submit my first site with google, it fails and then index only home page after some days. I checked the status and it reads that crawl attempt failed because of non existance of sitemap. so i added site map and other day my all pages were indexed by google. yahoo doenst needs sitemape though, becuase my all sites were indexed in yahoo with out sitemap

There are plenty of advantages in using google sitemaps: you'll see what queries and keywords people use to find your website, so you'll really know your audience. You'll get crawl reports and so on.

 

Google Sitemaps is not a guarantee of high page ranks or higher rankings in the SERPs. It cannot force google to crawl your website, it just makes the crawling more effective.

If your site is not SEO'd or search engine friendly, the site will not get rank. You also need link pr.

Because Google is a fully automated search engine. Submitting manually is useless. Google will find your site without your help, through links. Remember: you cannot force Google to index your website. You should submit your website to directories instead. Try the Open Directory Project and other dirrectories, related to your business. Get links back to your site and you'll be on the right path to success.

I guess it was down but back now.

The Submit your URL option works... eventually. But if you have quality back links google indexes your site almost instantly. Call it a SEO trick, take it as a SEO advice.

If i were you i would go professional when promoting your website see the classified ad i posted a while back and that maybe something you can look into not exactly that particular one as theirs many that offer this service and then at least you know it will be done proffesionally and correct.

Huh? Where's that classified ad? And why would you give this answer when the topic is "Does it really help in submitting sitemap to search engines?" Should we start a "are classified ads any good" topic? Excuse me, but I really don't understand what you mean!

I'd like to add to Pamils reply.

 

In my experience, google sitemaps is a waste of time for smaller sites, e.g. under 50 pages. From tests that I have run, having an XML sitemaps file submitted to Google do not increase the chances of your pages getting spidered and sometimes has hampered getting your pages spidered. You won't be surprised to know that I have since removed all XML files from the sitemaps tool (unless they are Big sites - around 1000+ pages up). I still use webmastercentral (Google) to see queries and rankings, however I do not use the sitemaps.

 

Remember that good SEO is down to individuals testing and experience. From MY tests on my sites and my clients websites, I found that it didn't work for me. My suggestion is for you to run your own tests and come to your own conclusions.

Submitting your site map to Google Sitemaps does speed up the process of page indexing.

To ensure better indexing, you should also get links pointed to the inner pages of your site.

Aswell as sitemaps, why not add some RSS feeds in there too? They are great, for users, and google will lap them up....

If you finding that your entire website isn't being cached then by all means I'd recommend submitting an XML sitemap to Google. However if your finding that pages that have been on you website for a long time have not been spiders / cached it will be more beneficial to find out why. The most common reason for this is poor website structure, and lack of ranking. On my own site I do a lot of internal link building between pages and it really pays off. I actually find that from the point I add a new page to the point I have organic search traffic landing on it is around 8 days (it is nearly almost spidered on the same day as adding it to the site).

 

Also just by submitting your sitemap you will most likely notice very little difference in the amount of traffic. You may want to look at doing some link building to internal pages just so Google thinks that the entire site is important enough to spider and rank. Cheers.

Sitemaps are always a useful thing to have I would say.
