A cool, free way to sort out the EU Cookie Law and make it look sexy on any site

EU Cookie Solution pandadoodle.com/cookies/ brain child of @panda_doodle, but it took @michaelw90 brains to code it.

Hope you all enjoy it either copy the code or download direct from github <- recommended.

Ok loads more research and some things pointed out to me after discussing on another forum I have created this post :

    http://www.pandadoodle.com/blog/eu-cookie-law-script-guide-lines/

Now if you read the ICCs PDF its all clear and easy to understand compare that to the ICOs PDF and email / phone calls and its a total nightmare.

Well it has something that all great designs need .... Pepsi

While it is quite a simple design the quirkiness of it is brilliant.

Two things that I don't think work that well:

The colour on the menu at the bottom, there isn't enough contrast between the colour text and the background. It might be the same for the text under panda doodle too but with that being bigger and bolder it is easier to see than the menu text is.

The gradients on the two buttons don't really fit the style of the rest of the site, the colours are fine but the gradient itself is a little harsher than everything else on the screen.

Id work your pants off and get so much working capitol behind you just to launch it other wise it will be dead in the water.

If you google hard enough you could find a script you could buy and hack around your requirements or again, seek help of a professional developer there are too many things to go wrong with this type of project for it be a diy home built project / learn as I go.

Keeping customer records and details is enough of a mind field let alone if your doing it for the first time...

    Good luck either way

And it's design is, well....not exactly good.

Yup. You can monitor as many sites as you like from one account or have as many accounts as you like monitoring one site, but you can't transfer sites between accounts and keep their data intact, so best to set them up under the owner's account if they're client sites.

With prices like that you do everyone a disservice.

First and foremost, yourself. How many clients do you think you can get/research/plan and create for in one week? Maybe 2? Can you live on £120/week?

Secondly, future you. You will get better, you will get experience and obviously you will raise prices but since your current client base is paying so low the aren't going to accept the large price hike you would need. So you need to re-convince a whole new group of clients using work you done cut rate and quickly.

Thirdly, your clients. Clients by definition don't know what makes a good designer. So they will sort by the most natural way they can, price. Can you honestly say that you would the time, research and effort in to make the best site you can for your client, for £60? I can't. I'll give you something passable but it's not worth my time to think in any great depth about what you actually need.

Lastly, your peers. We have established clients don't really know what makes a good designer. So exactly how is Pandadoodle meant to compete with you if he's quoting 10x what you are for what the client thinks is the same work? The guy is just gonna think Panda is ripping him off and thus low expectations are set. Except Panda can't go lower. He has a certain minimum he has to pull in every month and if he doesn't get enough willing clients he has to hike prices on everyone else.

It's the same reasons none of us like spec work (Design competition type stuff). It's a professional job, you absolutely should not be doing it for free. Time/Talent/Interest/Passion/Experience/Knowledge/Research all goes into making a designer and you should pay reasonable rates to gain access to that. I'm not saying jump instantly to the kind of rates the best designers are charging. Absolutely start on the bottom rung but don't screw yourself by going lower than what is reasonable.

Work out how much you need to survive week to week. There is your absolute bare minimum. You can add whatever you like to that for profit. Judge yourself how much you think you deserve/can get and go from there. Year down the line re-evaluate.

I'd also advise against the package deal type you have on your site. Design is a bespoke service, I think it is much fairer and much more professional to quote on a per-client basis.

A few extra steps there in case you want to go back to your old blog. but they're common sense anyway.

I don't think it needs to be hard coded. I always put my WP style sheet in the root of themes' folder, than I just use "img/image.png".

Nah not a stupid question at all, trick is to think of the root of your theme folder as the root of your site.
Within your theme have an image folder so your structure looks like...

Wp-content >> themes >> pandatheme (contains your theme files including CSS) >> image folder

This way you just use the images in your CSS like

    background-image:URL(img/picture.jpg);

Edit: Haha brightonmike beat me too it

As a learning point on how to do something sitting there and copying the same design over and over in photoshop teaches you how to use tools, create that effect and gives you ideas on how to use them in his own design.

I'm simply saying if you want to learn copying is a great way to do that, handing in a pre bought template is not going to do anyone any favors.

Telling him to find pre made JS and chucking them in or "alternatives" etc again will do no favours as the company will ask how he done it or to explain it which could leave him looking rather stupid! At least I would want to know more about it if I was hiring an intern shows applied or lack of knowledge
