Hello everyone, Planning a new project and I'm a bit lost as to where to begin. The website will have a homepage that is more or less simply a search bar that allows you to search for the title of a wikipage (which in the case of my site is a name). Each wikipage needs to have the same template with text that can be edited (more or less the same as wikipedia). What would be the best way to proceed? The site needs to have it's own domain. I was thinking about making the homepage site using drupal and then using the searchbar to redirect to a wiki farm like wikispaces (is that even possible?). Any suggestions? Help appreciated.

Another question If someone decides to go into a freelance career as a developer how do they go about making a portfolio if they don't have any design skills? Surely this makes it much harder to get work as a freelance developer?

I'm only 2 months into learning so I don't really have any examples of anything Ive done (not thats worth showing anyway). I started out learning HTML + CSS and have learned some basic design principles in the meantime. To be quite honest I'm not sure which I'd rather do. I enjoy both aspects of it so far. However, a course locally has popped up for PHP and mySQL which I have signed on for (I get paid 270/week to do the course as I'm unemployed so it was hard to turn down). I'ts 4 months long full time/5 days a week and the tutor has been a developer for 15 years or something so it seemed like a good opportunity. I know quite a lot of people and have family members in all sectors of society so I'm quite certain once I have the skills there will be work around for me but the trouble is deciding where my focus should be. I'm torn.

Yeah I see where you're all coming from. I'ts hard to decide which route to go down.

So how does one make a living as a freelancer when you can only do half the job required?

Hey guys, Question is rather simple. Are you a generalist (jack of all trades) or a specialist (master(or trying to master))one specific subject within the field? Also what do you think is the best route to take? I decided to try getting into web design/development because I have many ideas for websites that I'd like to pursue. Many of these ideas would be more on the design side rather than the development side. However, the idea of not being able to code my own sites and just being the person who slices up the images sounds ridiculous to me (no offence intended to any specialist designers)so I'm trying to learn both (focused moreso on the coding side right now). What do you think the future web designer/developer will look like? Are people going to specializing more and more or is the "jack of all trades" route going to be more popular?

Thats a great article I'll definetly make use of it. However, to be quite honest photoshop is quite daunting. I have no idea what anything does. I'd rather watch a few lessons finding out what half the buttons do before I jump right in

Hey guys, As you may know Ive been learning web design and development the past two months or so. I'm really starting to get into it and have been spending a solid 8-10 hours a day learning and reading. Ive mainly been just trying to get a solid base in XHTML and CSS and truly understand everything before I move on. Ive gotton to the point where I'm fairly comfortable putting together a site now and I'd like to start learning photoshop to put together some drafts for practice sites I'd like to build. I'm a member of lynda.com but the lessons for photoshop CS5 are incredibly dull and non centric to web design (Covers things like photo manipulation in detail etc) and I find I'm learning things I don't really need to know for the time being. Is there any lessons out there (free or not doesn't matter) for photoshop that has purely the web designer in mind? Thanks guys!
