  1. It honestly makes me think when I open up IE to do some checking and I see it take forever to load pages. Been an opera user for a few years now and I'll still impressed at how fast its rendering is.
  2. What's your monitor size? I'm looking at getting a 24inch in my next buy, simply for the room to be had when dealing with graphic stuff.
  3. I'm in the middle of deciding to get a new desktop(currently using a zooped up 3 year old laptop) and the Vista issue has been bugging me. Especially when you have the lure of a 64bit system and the need to run apache as local host. I would preferable just like to plug and play and get down to the gritty stuff without having to stress over install problems. One of the things I've been considering is going Linux and getting some kind of virtual PC system that would allow me to run Linux at the core, with XP and Vista on the top. I need to look into that more before I go for it as I've not used a linux OS before.
  4. Hell yeah. Man we are such geeks (that's ok though now in the Politically Correct world, in fact we even have our own 'cool' haha) I personally loved watching Stargate series. I don't judge either SG1 or Atlantis as similar, as I enjoy them both really just for what they are. I used to enjoy watching series like Farscape when I had Sky, but since they stabbed Virgin media in the back over Sky1 etc I don't get to see them, nor am I likely to buy sky for that reason. That's why I used to use sites like TVlinks until they got brought down by the over hard hammer of the law. Oh and Red Dwarf still is a fav of mine, even though it's more comedy than SCI FI. You know, I've never seen firefly!! I must be missing somthing really good and that hurts. Hold on google, I have a search FOR YOU! hehe.
  5. I agree with a few members here.. I actually have a subscription to it, however I'm rarely enticed by the tutorials. The recent graphic design one did perk my interest actually, glad to see it is becoming an on-going thing. I too have a look over computer arts website, as I love the face they put their past tutorials up. I was considering ditching the .NET mag simply because half of the features in there I know about in advance simply because I'm addicted to the tech web. And the other half of me really needs a kick in design/arts arse. The other issue with it is as php_penguin pointed out, it has nothing to do with .NET itself. Very stupid really, since the mag is branded differently for overseas. Do they thing we don't know of the real .NET here in the UK? Ahem, yes, there are hundreds of jobs up for that alone. So really it is misleading to begin with. I think i'm gonna cancel and sign up to another mag for a year. As blue dreamer said, mags are pricey these days so 6quid can go far depending on what mag you buy and are interested in. I'll probably go with a graphics/photoshop one for this year. Interestingly, are there any web-programming mags out there? I wouldn't suppose so, since there are many languages and the probable market (either beginner or experienced) is perhaps too low. Anyway, I usually get enough information from the web in general. Thanks for listening
  6. I've been meaning to get around to learning this - I'm glad I stumbled in here 'cause I have a basic static site that is starting to get out of hand with updating many similar sections. Apart from tying to theme wordpress also, in the mean time I'm sure I can implement this. Top tutorial! And thanks for posting it, because even the simple things can help.
  7. Personally, I bought sitepoint's book the photoshop anthology which helped no end. It really did boost my ability to rip designs up in photoshop. However, Adobe In-Design is supposed to be the package for this task. I find that doing certain things in photoshop is long winded - but then i'm barely a year into my own photoshop expertise so I can imagine i'm doing things in a round-about way. Still, if anyone here uses in-design i'd love to know what you think about it for designing websites.
  8. Thanks for the clarification Thomas. I think I eventually figured that out, mostly from spending a few hours tweaking every little thing to see how it responded
  9. Glad to have been some help. Now get to testing! lol...should keep you busy for a while
  10. Anyone have any idea why IE would be picking up the other style sheet even though I'm serving the little b*stard one of it's own? In the <head> section I have this: <link href="development.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <!--[if IE]><link href="IEoverride.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /><![endif]--> If I remove the original style sheet from the HTML, then the IE sheet works as it's supposed to, if I put it back in then something very strange happens and the whole layout breaks like hell. p.s html and css both validate
  11. I dunno if you guys have fixed it yet but you can d/l and install multiple IE's from treadsoft http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE
  12. SEO can be done by anyone, and yo don't need to pay for it. Read certain forums and online blogs and you can learn alot that way. You should consider SEO right from the beginning of coding a site in HTML.
  13. Well, the host got back to me and said as an example the current top user of their shared hosting uses over 1000GB data transfer per month. Is it me or is that huge? (Bearing in mind my site does not have a huge page load, which depends on how much you use of course)
  14. Thanks bluedreamer, I understand the nature of UL hosting, and the TOS of this host are vauge and as such is why I pointed out what they said there. Even so, I submitted a support ticket asking how many visitors/page views the shared hosting account can be accomodated. I hope for a direct honest answer (tinged with a sales pitch no-doubt)
  15. Arrghh! You know I hadn't considered that the film will (most-definately) have a website of their own. Though thinking about it 'pimp' is the right kind of word for these sites, which albeit instantly do well in search engines, (how?-backlinks from everywhere under the sun? Online Newspapers, Blogs etc?) but they rarely provide unique content around the subject. Then, if people are interested in the story/book/author behind the film then that's where my site comes in. I've already done tons of SEO, but what should I try in order to maintain ranking in SERPS when this beomoth film site comes out? Forum signatures? Directories by the thousand? Any advice here would be grateful. I should mention that the site is keyword domained, with the primary keyword being the Author's site, and there is my site and another site with using the keyword as I do, only focusing on the news about the film - we have exchanged links and saw our sites shoot from page 4 to page 1 in google when we did this. Regarding Hosting, I have an unlimited account on a bulk user (the top-paid shared hosting service for that host) and all the TOS suggest that they are extremely capable of handling large rise in visitors, they state that if it is not possible for them to meet demand then they refund the cost of the package the site is on. I would be prepared to get a dedicated or VD server should the need arise. As for site content, I sure do hope to provide a whole lot of information about the book and movie when that comes, and hope that visitors sign up to the forum to discuss the film and the book if they decide to read it. Sure there are some ads on there which I hope will cover the costs involved. Thanks for your replies guys they have been incredibily helpful
