How to improve your design of your Web site - fix this btw, wrong forum

Hello everyone! My name is Luke Burns. I've been wandering the forum for a few days now. Made some posts. Just officially introducing myself now. I have a lot of experience in the web world. I've been in on this gig for a few years so far, and it's just become part of who I am. I do php/mysql and html/css.. and a lot of Photoshop as well! I'm from the US so I'm not local, but I've noticed that a lot more people are looking for developers, on this site, than the other forums I've been on. Hopefully that doesn't mean a lot, since web design isn't a really job requiring commute. Again, just officially introducing myself. Seems like a great place! I like it. Not fond of the footer though. Everything else, visually, is very nice!

To be honest, I don't like it at all. I don't like the color scheme, and the gradients are too intense. The typography needs a lot of work and everything else seems very.. generic. The header isn't too bad, but the floral brush is almost cliché. I'd definately consider changing the background color, maybe even the green. The logo's looks good but the np icon also looks pretty generic. Good luck! Keep me posted. Luke

A few things I see from the latest design... (you may just not have gotten to yet) - Typography isn't working for me. It looks to me that you may not have gotten there yet but just a heads up. Make the post font size smaller. Style links. - The rotating banner title and descriptions could use a background to stand out.. at the moment, it is unreadable. I'd maybe try giving it a black bg with some transparency and make it stand out more. - Twitter typography needs work. - Remove styling from lists (ul) - I'm getting a continuous loading circle above the email form. Lastly, I sort of like the logo font.. if it flowed a bit more. I'd try warping the blog a bit to make it blend. Maybe reduce the curve of the web design text. Oo, one more - I'm not diggin the content boxes.. color and especially the drop shadow. Keep us updated! Good luck! Luke

I agree with the colors.. I wouldn't even bother with them- but if you must, make it time of day. Remove bottom grass.. and try pimpin out the typography a bit! Email form is a good idea. One more idea.. i'm not sure if you were attempting to make the background the same color as the grass- but transferring colors from photoshop rarely works (at least for me). It may for you, but to me it's lighter. I'd slice a 1px by 1px image from the psd to match up colors. One thing to add to what skateside said.. never do it for free, if your good at it. I think it's good to do "some" non-profit work when building up a profile. You can stick your name at the bottom and you'll get free walking advertisement. Talk to whomever your doing a site for.. ask them politely to spread the word. They'll be much more willing than a paying customer! That's what I'm working on now... spreading the word! Luke

Yep, it's all possible! You may have some problems with transparency in old ie browsers, idk- thats from my experience. But everything else should be pretty simple. Opacity for header - http://www.w3schools.com/Css/css_image_transparency.asp For the header, I would suggest using three images- a left header (for the curve), a 1px width image that repeats across the width, and a right header(for curve). This way it can be liquid. From there, images in the header won't adopt the transparency, i believe. So you should be good. If you want to add transparency, you can inherit it or just add it again. Eh not bad Could use some work. Keep workin hard! How old are you? I started taking things seriously nearly a year ago.. things have been working out pretty well since then! Got a few freelance jobs but thats about it. I want to get a job for this summer but it's hard to find someone willing to hire. I'm 15 btw.

Don't you love macs? I love mine. I made some cash over the summer and bought myself a macbook! Best thing I've ever bought. Coda is worth the cost. But.. if you have to- I'd earn the money back and pay off what you owe already before you buy more! If you can code, than you shouldn't need coda.. it just makes everything that much simpler and quicker.

I've used notepad++ and aptana for pc - both were great, i just got annoyed at loading time of aptana so i liked notepad++ better. On mac, coda is the #1 choice. I have both coda and Dreamweaver. I use coda.

Is the background layer hidden in the layer palette? (Eye hidden)

Make sure that before you save the background is transparent, if you have one. Everything else sounds right.

There's no such thing as unlimited. Read the terms... you'll find the catch.

Slice it but save it as a png or gif with transparency, jpegs don't support transparency. Also, if the background is the same color as what you're using it for then there shouldn't be a problem. In this case it is a better choice because several old browsers have trouble with transparent images.
