Hey guys,

 

There have been 2 long winded threads about my portfolio site. Finally things were getting some better feedback and here we are nearly at the project completion.

 

Would love to get a final review on the work so far before fixing things for Internet Explorer and writing the content.

 

The only functional issue right now that I can see is the contact form is not live and of course the css issues for IE.

 

Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts

Very good indeed. I sort of expected the buttons to glow and didn't like the old fashioned tape recorder effect, but everything else; brill.

OMG! next time put a warning along the lines of 'this will crash bocaj's browser, please change to firefox'

 

Am i the only one who's version of chrome crashes? It's that damn login thing *angry face*

Just two points

 

The normal and hover states of all rollovers should be a single image (prevent's lag on hover).

 

"I am available for more client work, click here to hire me today." i think the whole quote should be a link. (the more to click the better )

 

I like everything else, unsure about the sticky note thing at the top, but only unsure. Don't really feel strongly either way.

I'm on IE8 now and the site works fine. But it would be nice to get back to the home page without hitting the back button. You should have put a copyright on your work, similar to GNU:

Your Key Skills should go to a paragraph that explains what that skill is (definition) and how good you are at it, and im not convinced you need a home page and a portfolio page (pretty much the same)

Your CV needs some serious rethink

1. Key Skills ~ As Russell said previously, you've listed 20 key skills, but not how proficient you are at them.
   Your key skills should read something like
   • The design and development of websites using XTHML, CSS, PHP ....
     
   • Integration of Wordpress, PHPBB and eCommerce into websites
     
   • etc.
     

[*]Education ~ Should be listed as latest at the top of the list. Also I don't like the comment "On track for a pass" it would be better as "Currently studying - completion due <date>"

[*]Experience ~ Should be listed as latest at the top of the list - employers are more interested in you current skills not something you did years ago

[*]Spelling ~ watch out for misspellings - it doesn't look good

At the moment, quickly reading it, I see someone who is at or just left school who is working part time as a sales assistant?

 

Oh and by the way I don't like wood effects on websites

Why are employers not interested in what you did years ago, are they thick; if you did it years ago you must be able to do it.

 

 

 

Are you going to tell me a cv should fit on one page; I did that in smallprint, but then most employers can't read anyway.

 

The site is brilliant and the internet affords the opportunity and bandwidth.

 

I just left school and could be doing a semi skilled job, everybody has to live and if you think you are different,

<ahem> and for that very reason probably don't have so much experience in the field of writing C.V's.

NeRo is completely right. Your recent jobs/skill development are most relevant, especially in a technological field.

 

I recently updated my CV in this fashion, and within 48 hours got contacted 8 times for work after months of waiting.

Always modify your CV to suit the job you're looking for, and structure your work history to emphasise relevant experience.

Many thanks for the good, and very constructive feedback. I am glad some people like the site and it is very much on topic.

 

All copy within the site is needing re-written, I will actually need to afford some proper time and write some good copy.

 

The quote about the company stealing my site, well yeah its true - but that wont be going live, there are so many legal implications from all of that.

 

The navigation should be using sprites you are right.

 

The c.v. was constructed in a manner as recently I went to speak with some IT agencies in Edinburgh and some of the advice was that I listed key skills directly at the top. I should give experience level, but this is known as a "skills matrix" i think and it is seo within seo if you know what i mean. As soon as an agency searches their database for skills, i.e php etc they find these keywords within your c.v. right at the very top of the document.

 

Maybe though, for a c.v. such as this (more of a presentation) it should read well and be kind to the eye. They also say you should have at least 3 different types of c.v. for the different disciplines.

 

I am no expert, but again will have a re-think about a few things.

Thanks again everyone, this has been a journey - learned alot from you guys and the previous threads were a clear guidance.

 

If anyone would like to do a collab project in the future, i'm open to discussion. You know what they say, life is a learning curve.

Yeah for sure the effect is definitely not necessary on the home page, although I feel it does at certain "usability" for lack of a better word when browsing the portfolio. when you close one area you can clearly see the next and so on. Thus removing clutter.

 

I had read the css-tricks blog post (Chris is outstanding) i actually saw the change happen live i was like wtf did his site just morph? Clicked one post, refreshed to view another and BAM awesome site yet again. He clearly works very hard, which is exactly what I intend to do. Maybe will never reach the same talent or whatever but you can only try.

I like it. Not fond of the footer though. Everything else, visually, is very nice!
