Cuil vs Google

Featured Replies

Some of google's ex employe's have starded their own search engine, suposedly to beat google at searching the web :pp.

Was just wondering what your thought's are on this new search engine :)

It's rubbish...so far!

Gave it a quick go this morning and it often came back with hugely irrelevant results! They claim it has a larger index size than google at 120 billion web pages but google stopped disclosing the number of sites it indexes years back so there is no real proof!

maybe it will pick up, I don't know?

oh and here's the link Cuil I think pronounced 'cool'

Agreed, the results are often irrelevant or link to subpages of a website. The homepage is nowhere to be found in the results. Also not a big fan of the 3 column layout, but that might just need some time to get used to.

On the pages part, google announced to have indexed 1 Trillion pages. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/we-...eb-was-big.html so gues that claim is out the window.

I like it. We just need to give it time. google has been around forever. So I'm sure it's no comparison to google yet. but I think it has a future. google needs something competitive, yahoo and ask are about the only real comp it has had and even that is nothing. This has a decent chance, plus a bunch of them used to work for google so they know the inside scoop. I'm surprised there wasn't some kind of no compete issue happening though. The colors are pretty cool too.

I love how it filters the results for you by category. say you type in a band or something.

I typed in the band "green day" and it filters to all, lyrics, tabs. Thats awesome if you ask me

You can submit your site at

Submit your site to cuil

by email. mail is kinda lame. but im guessing that will change eventually

Well I'll just say this then I'll let you all read my rant on my blog. Cuil is a pile of cow dung and isn't worth the time it took them to develop it! http://codehound.goldsteinmedia.com/2008/0...-waste-of-time/

Okay I lie I have one more thing to say - Closed Beta! Try the sh!t out before you make it go live and have the whole world see it and call it crap. My God people take some prozac or something think before you do something that might be the biggest blunder of the Web 2.0 era! Okay go read my post haha! 8)

What do you mean blunder? I thought the term "Web 2.0" meant you could release buggy, unfinished sites in a "beta" phase for the public to try and use.

I think the problem is that google is google, everyone knows of it and even though there are millions of other search engines out there google is still google. Not only do cuil have to compete with google but with all the other search engines that are out there.

On a design look to it, I think they are trying too hard to be different and what they have so far is a mess. Good luck to them all the same.

It looks interesting though I think it really needs a lot of hard work in order to get useful search results. But still I'm looking forward to seeing them for more improvements. It's nice to see Google in a fierce competition for internet users because having competition would lead for better results.

It definately needs some time to bed itself down

The first day I used it - it was truly bad, irrelevant results etc.

I read about the technical issues around it - it seems that when it gets overloaded the way it is set up leads to irrelevant results spewing out (odd..yep...)

Today - the results on similar searches were better

I think you have to use it over a period of time - it is a new concept in presenting search results, which is cool ;)

But unless the quality of the results are good it won't be able to compete

I think it will be less relevant for corporate searches though, and more appropriate for entertainment etc.

Just searched logo design

...

The tab of related searches shows FREE LOGO DESIGN first!!

oh no!!! :)

I don't like it. :(

It took forever to load, and didn't even acknowledge the existence of my site. :pp

A friend directed me to this site last week. Looked at it for 10 seconds and thought it was useless. I have no loyalty to Google at all so would gladly use a search engine that offered the same experience as Google. It's just for now nothing comes close.
