But they rip you off in the process. You can save hundreds by building it yourself and it really is not hard at all.

I would always recommend people that need a basic machine to buy from Dell or HP as you get the 1-3yrs onsite support even for the home user now a days. Due to the fact that a £400 dell machine is just fine for internet and office work and if you do the DIY route it'll cost you £100ish for a XP/Vista License and then another £100 for the Monitor + your time it doesn't leave much room for profit.

 

But if you want a killer gaming rig or CAD workstation then it's DIY job.

A few years back (was it 5? - how the time passes) I spent a ridiculous mount of money (£1200) on a pc and at that time huge 19" monitor - this machine has sat on my desk running 24 hours a day 365 days a year - gets a reboot every other month - has seen websites built, videos edited, music tracks recorded, has looked after my accounts, is currently entertaining me with u2 and shows no sign of giving up....

 

and to think at the time I was told I was wasting money on a sony vaio.....

 

and now look what sony bring to the desktop market.. shame on them!

I like Dell, for the value you get compared to other companies as well as the ability to customise your machine!

I vote for Dell - had mine for 6 years now. Really need a replacement as it's a bit leggy, but has been faultless from day one.

 

I agree Alienware rip you off - if you are going to build something with those sorts of spec then it has to be a DIY job.

build it yourself, cheaper and you get to see and choose what goes in.... if you have never built a pc before there are lots of tutorials on youtube and google.

I agree. Build it yourself if you can. Get exactly what you need then.
