there is any number of ways - ue javascript for transition effects - use flash and stick an xml feed into it (especialy useful if database driven) A lot depends on if you need to build it into a custom cms solution and allow image uploads like here: http://www.hotelsavoyjersey.com/gallery.php - thats using an xml feed with flash transitions. As is: http://www.castleblinds.co.uk/blindsvenetian.php Without flash you do narrow your options and even with javascript transitions its not going to have the same polish - I am not a fan of flash but in picture galleries for me its the best solution.

There are quite a few resources out there for page flip effects. In many cases it necessitates breaking a pdf down into individual swf files and adding them to an xml type listing to create a page flip effect such as this one I have done: http://www.zehnder.co.uk/brochure/villeroy-boch-sept-08/ Dependant on browser and flash plug you may find it loads and works fine or it may be a very very slow load - Not all in all a good solution for the client. A few years back (was it 5? - how the time passes) I spent a ridiculous mount of money (£1200) on a pc and at that time huge 19" monitor - this machine has sat on my desk running 24 hours a day 365 days a year - gets a reboot every other month - has seen websites built, videos edited, music tracks recorded, has looked after my accounts, is currently entertaining me with u2 and shows no sign of giving up.... and to think at the time I was told I was wasting money on a sony vaio..... and now look what sony bring to the desktop market.. shame on them!

If I look at the start menu on my pc there shows from the top down notepad dreamweaver fireworks expression adobe acrobat professional ws ftp do like expression though

thanks for the reply - I think its a case of knowing I can write down the cost of the hardware over the next few years - I do like the vaio's and glad of the feedback - a couple of clients of mine who are in the it support industry are all very dismissive of how low tech my stuff is compared to current availability so I thought it worth getting the feedback from others in the same line of work as us incase I was without realising it limiting our local environment

Hi Broody welcome to the forum couldnt get what you meant but did notive the background image - a little inventive css will help stretch the whole of the backdrop image tio scale to page which might make a nice addition to the site

Thanks James I was building pcs way back pre win 95 - I did want to stop with just having an out of the box pc solution mainly because I cant be bothered any longer in going down the self build route (lazy I know)n that said it might well be worth a look only problem is stopping myself over specifyiing the machine :) Windows 7 - now that is worth googling for a look

already have licences on all software entioned it was more a case of checking incase any have issues with vista. As you say its a case of having to jump at sometime or other - just a bit hesitant - With the monitors I have run a 19" 4x3 msony monitor and had a 40" plasma for when talking clients through websites etc... so although a dual screen environment its not a dual working environmant so to speak.

Very clean design, like the colours and the increase of screen size adding interest in displaying more of the tree

Well this is a dilema we all face every so often. Hardware! what to buy? I work on a pc all day every day - have done so right back into the dawn of time when my old dual 5.1/4" floppy (genuine ffloppies this is) amstrad with its 14" green / black screen and the dos prompt. Currently that has evolved into my p4 3.2ghz 1gb ram xp powered sony vaio desktop - the machine is about 3-4 years old now and connected to a network with 2 other similar vaios and 2 terrastation 2tb network storage devices. Hardware has somewhat passed me by and I am now thinking it time to spend some money (but mnot much if I can help it) So I would welcome thoughts and comments as to what everyone thinks would be a good platform for me to build. Thoughts so far are: 1) have to make the jump to vista (got to do it some time or other so now seems like a good time) 2) screen - should I stick with the 4 x 3 configuration or look at the widescreen? also is 2 - 4x3 monitors better than 1 larger widescreen or.. should 2 widescreens be an option and sod the sdesk space it takes? 3) software problems? tend to use the following in this order, fireworks, notepad, dreamweaver, ipswitch, acrobat professional, photoshop, frontpage (yes I did say frontpage and yes I do like it), quark xpress, illustrator, flash, adobe premier - then a number of silly programs like axialis icon workshop - great for favicons, and opencube and sothink menu software. - so platform must support these I must confess when I decided to look - first place was sony to see if they have abny desktop vaios (they dont) which is a pity as for the slightly higher cost I have had 24x7 for 4 years service from all 3 of mine. Also before anyone says mac - w do have a g4 peowermac and its great - but that said the pc is the primary tool simply because clients are 1) happier to have things demo on an environment they understand 2) it happens to be what sits on my desk - the mac being in another office and that means having to move from here to use it So for now lets talk pc's Looking forward to what peoples thoughts are.

Hi People Just came across this forum and thought to join as after all ma commercial web developer and have been one since 1995 - prior to that I worked as a commercial programmer with a small period when I lost my way and worked on deployment of old bnc lan systems and deployment of sage <yuck> Anyway today I work pretty much on online shopping carts or database driven sites predominantly in php and mysql environments.
