I'm gearing up to register my 1st domain and to get a webhosting account - nothing big just a personal web page + email + small photo projects.

 

I did a little bit of research using google:"best uk webhosting" and found (here: http://web-hosting-review.toptenreviews.com/uk/) justHost and I though - cool, all unlimited, does not cost too much etc. Afterwards I actually figured out they were in the US (wtf I thought), I continued my searches and I found this forum where I learned a few things and found names of webhost providers I would not see in the ranks I was looking at... it's a little bit of jungle here!

 

so I started all over again and it looks that the standard cPanel package from tsohost would provide me all what i need i.e. 2.5gig of storage, sufficient bandwith etc. i saw a few, in most cases positive, reviews of them here so the questions for you would be:

- do you believe this package looks ok?

- anything I should know about tsohost before commiting myself?

- any alternatives i should consider?

Beware of web hosting review sites, all the hosts they list tend to be affiliate links where the site owner gets paid if you click through and sign up. Therefore the "recommendations" you see aren't what you think they are.

 

I've never used TSO but general feedback from real customers suggests they are perfectly fine with good support

I use Vidahost, which is part of the same group as TSO. Highly recommended, great service and performance.

I would recommend you to check whether the plan mentioned satisfies all your needs and features. Second thing you need to check is their support quality. Support really matters a lot.

i use TSO and find them very quick and helpful to respond to any queries.

I agree with what others have said do not believe host reviews web sites, most of them are run by the actual web hosting companies themselves or affiliate links.

 

Another tip when looking for hosting providers is don't get pulled in my the "Unlimited" Offers, these are just marking gimmicks to attract new clients and tend to have more limits then any other hosting account.

We hosted the 150 websites in three servers like Speed host, Godaddy and Bigrock. In this servers we have packages we can select a package according to our requirements to the website. For every website we need the email accounts according to the url. They provide the email accounts and the service also good.

Don’t mind mate but I am getting what’s the logic behind UK or certain company hosting? If the hosting company’s reputation is good then does it matter where it’s coming from? I will suggest you Blue host or Hostgator as currently they are the top two while if you want to know about more companies then you can check lowhosting since there you can find reviews of all.

Bluehost offers good support but too pricy I think. HG is a combination of both but it would be nice to know which provider you decided to sign up with.

Nothing wrong with unlimited. There are ways to make unlimited hosting great for the end user and to be sustainable for the provider.

To be honest I'm actually surprised by that as on UK Business Forums (where I post a lot), they're also often recommended along with us.

However we have had some of their clients move to us.

 

They're now quite a large company so if you're looking for a personal level of service then you may prefer a medium sized host.

 

Personally I think that's the sweet spot for a hosting company as you get the the reliability provided by proper infrastructure which is typically missing from a smaller host, but the more personal level of service which you arguably can't get with a large host, however I'm obviously biased.

 

The host review sites are either owned by the very large hosts or affiliate businesses, and are completely biased. Their top 10 lists typically list US hosts with overcrowded servers, poor peformance and poor support.

 

An independent review site, or forum such as this is typically a better bet.

 

There's also no such thing as "unlimited" web hosting. This is a marketing ploy and any host offering unlimited hosting will typically aggressively limit this in their terms of service so you often can't even get to the resource usage offered by more honest hosts that actually state a limit. They typically do this using inode limits - so every file and email stored on your account adds up and there's a finite number of inodes you can have, or through CPU and memory limits.

 

The reason for choosing a UK host, beside receiving better support during your typical waking hours (as long as you've chosen a decent host), is that if your main visitors are from the UK they'll have a shorter distance to the server for any requests - resulting in better performance. They get a better end user experience, and Google also uses this as part of its search engine ranking.

 

It really makes no sense for a UK based site targeting UK visitors to be hosted in any other country.

 

Other things worth considering are the quality of the hardware and the web server used.

For example does the host just use standard hard drives, or is it pure SSD storage (which is quicker and more reliable).

Likewise there are plenty of Linux hosts out there, but LiteSpeed for example is up to 9 times faster than standard Apache, so on a good web host your site will load a lot faster.

Gosh, I didn't realise things had got that bad.

 

Perhaps that's why we've had a fair few people move to us. We've had UKBF members move to us from Vidahost for example citing support issues, but plenty of other people on that forum are still recommending them.

 

Yeah it's all Paragon Internet Group now, with the same support team handling both brands.

 

Perhaps this being a design forum you require more support than the typical UKBF member that's more a business user, and it's with the non standard queries that they're falling down.

 

However 1.5 weeks for installing a wildcard SSL is poor.

 

I imagine it's a case of over trading and not having the skilled support in place, or the number of staff to deal with the volume of queries coming in.

Hopefully they sort this out as it'd be a shame for a host with a reputation such as theirs to go the way of other large UK hosts.

What do you mean by a "clean ip"?

 

I missed your TSO comment, it's quite interesting, even though I've never hosted with them.

 

I've found lately the better hosts are the ones that are aimed at developers with a bit more technical knowledge, like Digital Ocean or Linode. The support generally requires more technical knowledge, some of the support ticket replies look they have come straight from engineers, not people paid to know the basics.

 

There's no need to link to the company you work for in every post. I have edited you last post for you.

 

So in short, clean IP is just a dedicated IP.

 

I thought as much, and any 'serious' website owner or developer will refer to it as a dedicated IP and not a clean IP.

Clean IP was a new term for me, and i work with hosting..

 

I know that we have gotten questions from customers that want i IP that has not been listed on spamlists, like Spamhaus, that is the closest i can think of being a "clean ip".

 

In a shared hosting package a clean ip could perhaps mean an IP where porn and such is not hosted?

 

Just guessing here, i dont know.
