Hello, working on a website for past 7 months and getting to the stages of completion.

 

Its essentially a custom forum, so will have lots of people viewing pages and commenting.

 

Not sure where to go regarding hosting? For this style site what properties of hosting should i be looking for?

 

There is lots of database action ofcourse, but all images (for now) are hosted else where so its just getting text from the DB.

 

Apart from that it will just be like any other forum.

We've got a clients ~1 million page view per month forum on TSO Pro cPanel account. No issues whatsoever.

Ill check them out, i was going to go VPS / DEDI but dont think my site will really be that heavy labour.

I would say VPS would be overkill unless you're getting many million page views per week, not month. It does of course depend on content and code.

 

The forum in question is IPS (Invision). 7 years old, 10,000 members and just under 1 million posts.

Everything on my site is built by hand from scratch so in one way its probably alot lighter than the normal message board, but it maybe not quite be as efficient at processing and handling users etc. However it will be no where near a million page views so should be okay!

If you are going to use cPanel you can use cpnginx or litespeed which would help with server load etc. But as another member mentioned above, it really does depend on how well the forum is coded.

 

I suggest you choose a shared or semi-dedicated plan to start with and only upgrade to a VPS when you need to, unless you'd rather use a VPS from the start to prevent downtime etc when having to upgrade at a later date.

I would recommend starting off with some shared hosting. Find a host that will give you the ability to upgrade to a VPS easily as and when your ready.

 

Remember not all VPS servers are managed and unless your use to dealing with VPS servers you might come a bit stuck.

 

There are many hosting providers as mentioned above that will give you a quality shared hosting plan, it just depends how week your script is optimised and how much traffic your site generates.

I am not going to suggest you any hosting while for me it’s hostgator or GoDaddy which is the best yet you can just visit lowhosting and there you will find all the comparison between top companies including their price so it’s easier to find which is more suitable for you after checking your price range and also all the reviews are fully honest.
