May 29, 201313 yr Promised my self to finish this Blender model and upload it to turbosquid.com this week I started the model over two years ago and haven't done any work on it in over a year. But now I'm gonna complete it or die trying. Almost ready with the modeling now. I just need to UV-unwrap add textures and a rig. Comments are welcome.
May 29, 201313 yr Not bad dude! Pretty awesome I wish I could do that What programme do you use? Keep the good work up
May 29, 201313 yr Author I use Blender. From blender.org The program is open source and is just as good as programs like Max and Maya Edit: ups almost forgot: "Thanks Row" Edited May 29, 201313 yr by Nillervision
June 13, 201313 yr Impressive Nillervision. I bet that was really tough in Blender, I opened Blender once and it looks more focused on graphics than Sketchup and looks much better and more powerful; but very hard to use I imagine. I couldn't draw a cube lol.
June 17, 201313 yr Great to see a 3D job here ! I can confirm what Nillervision stated, blender is great and really valuable. I was used to work under 3DSMAX and now I only work with Blender, It's more than a 3D application, you can achieve plenty of awesome art using it and there is a big bonus -> Its totally free ! I can understand at first you are afraid when you open Blender with its buttons & UI, but if you have a good tutorial to follow to learn the basis, it comes really quick ! Plus, there is the fact you can use it as a tool for your webdesign, as exemple, I use it to design mascot, It's really helpful ! :-) @Nillervision : Your model and its topology look clean, could be awesome if you could add some more modeling details, It'll stand out your ship, at the same time it depends on the purpose of this one Keep it up Edited June 17, 201313 yr by Azuk
June 18, 201313 yr Author @Nillervision : Your model and its topology look clean, could be awesome if you could add some more modeling details, It'll stand out your ship, at the same time it depends on the purpose of this one Thanks for your interest. Here's a few details: The model consist of 7410 verts and 7128 faces (without subsurf modifiers). I've managed to keep all faces as quads. I actually did make my deadline but I'm not happy with the UV-layout as it causes to much distortion on the textures so I will give the texturing another go. I will post some renders as soon as the textures are done. Edited June 18, 201313 yr by Nillervision
June 21, 201313 yr Good luck, obviously UVS aren't the funniest part of the job, but well, It worth the pain at the end when you have all your layouts ready to be textured under photoshop/gimp, It's just a pleasure !!! It's a bit similar when we have to rig a character or anything else, that's something I really dislike, however when you have a nice rig, that's as well a pleasure to animate, a part from the fact I'm really bull**** when it comes to rigging lol ! So I rarely animate
June 22, 201313 yr The blender model, created by you is professionally incredible & technically accurate. Although Blender is a difficult 3d graphics modelling software, you did a great job!
June 22, 201313 yr Did you work to a scale Niller? I've heard it's very hard to work to a scale in Blender. Looks fantastic.
June 25, 201313 yr Did you work to a scale Niller? I've heard it's very hard to work to a scale in Blender. Looks fantastic. Why would it be difficult ? As any other 3D application you can setup the unit scale. Once you have chosen one unit, It's up to you to keep things scaled correctly or not ...
June 25, 201313 yr Author Did you work to a scale Niller? I've heard it's very hard to work to a scale in Blender. Looks fantastic. Thanks. I simply imported a blueprint of a galeon (top-,side-,front-, & back-view) I found in google, imported it as a background image and lined the verts up to the blueprint as close as posible in orthographic wiev. The scale is not acurate but its easy to fix. As Azuk pointed out: it's not harder to get the correct scale in Blender than in other applications, but earlier versions of Blender only had a measure called "blender units". I guess thats why you have heard that its hard to do acurate scales in Blender. However newer version features metric units as well as blender units. Edited June 25, 201313 yr by Nillervision
June 25, 201313 yr Why would it be difficult ? As any other 3D application you can setup the unit scale. Once you have chosen one unit, It's up to you to keep things scaled correctly or not ... Thanks, I have never used Blender. I tried it for five minutes and it seemed a headache. I'm only at basic level with Sketchup and was considering learning Blender, but was advised to leave it alone. The reason being I use it for architectural purposes, and was advised to stick with Sketchup as Blender was more for graphics and drawing to scale was apparently awkward in Blender.
June 26, 201313 yr Thanks, I have never used Blender. I see, but honestly you can use as well Blender for architectural purposes, just google it, and you'll see plenty of awesome renders ! About having headache to learn it at first, I understand you, It looks a bit frightening at first because there are plenty of buttons on the screen. But keep in mind that you don't need to know everything to start doing projects. And I honestly don't know everything yet. I highly suggest you to start learning with videos from cgcookie as exemple. At first, you should learn the basis as the interface, then how to model with basics tools (poly modeling). Then how to texture, using materials, unwrapping objects... Go step by step, and you'll be able to learn that application as anyone. Just one thing however... You'll need some free time as 3D is really time consuming...
August 31, 201312 yr Author Some progress now. There's still a lot of detail that needs to be modeled and textured. The textures on these images will be completely replaced.
April 20, 201412 yr Author I did some work on textures and compositing: Please let me know what you think
April 23, 201412 yr Simply adorable man. No word to say. You make me crazy and teach me so that I can make the quite similar for me.
April 23, 201412 yr Author Thanks Arianna ( I think - Wouldn't want to cause to much craziness ) If you are interested in learning how to create something like this here's a list of resources. Blender - The 3D application that I use. It is such a fantastic piece of software and absolutely free. Blender is more than a 3D modeling application. It even has a game engine and a video editor with camera-tracking and masking effects much like Adobe After Effects. It will take you some time to learn to master Blender but I promise you will have fun all the way. Blend Swap - Free models, materials textures etc. Turbosquid -Thousands of 3D models (some free) Neal Hirsigs tutorials - Beginner tutorials Blender Cookie - Tutorials and resources Edited April 23, 201412 yr by Nillervision
May 29, 201511 yr Author Done! (sort of) Animation here: Thanks for all the comments The model will soon be available for purchase Edited May 29, 201511 yr by Nillervision
