Design Challenges & Practice Thread

Featured Replies

Need ideas for a personal practice project? Why not create a WDF topic full of them?

Many designers who are entering the field of web design often ask for project ideas and concepts they can use to build a portfolio. I know that I personally am always looking for concepts I could use to create new designs and add to a portfolio and I'm sure I'm not alone, so....

Post random creative ideas and challenges in this thread for practice. If everyone contributes just one idea in each post, it should grow fairly quickly. Furthermore, if any one actually designs a website based on an idea posted by a user, they can upload it to these forums for show and tell in this thread or in the "critiques & feedback" section.

I'll start with a new post below as an example. Maybe actually implementing these ideas can become a game and add some fun to these forums.

So I'll go ahead and contribute a design idea. Don't laugh, I'm genuinely trying to be creative here :D

What a great starting post :D Must...avoid...reading..more - too distracting! Totally agree with you though. The creative juices are flowing on high now and thinking of some ideas already. I think it's an excellent idea. Maybe this could be set up as a new category? Not a competition as such, but exercises to keep the old grey matter pumped when no work on/waiting on client decisions.

Anyways, aside from the above ideas. I'll throw in another one. This one is a little ambitious so you can water down however you see fit. Creating a new social media platform. Not building it, just a concept and as to why it stands out (as much as it can) from the others. Not a new Facebook or Twitter - maybe something even local for a particular demographic. Let's see... come up with a social platform for tribute bands. That is, a community who can log in, upload videos and music and rate venues. But only for tribute bands. A choice of 80's, 90's or a particular genre such as Mods, New Romantics, etc...

Perhaps the challenge would be to knock out a comp in Photoshop (other graphic software is available) in three formats - mobile, tablet and desktop. A page of your choice, as is the theme and palette. Each challenge could be voted on too, commented on so we can all learn from it (holding hands and teaching the world to sing in adequate harmony). Excellent post - cheers Pete.

I'm off to get 40 winks to the power of 10 as I'm getting a bit delirious. Nighty night :lazy:
