I'm a web developer. One graphic designer that I contacted proposes to send to me every client approaching him for web projects (which he cannot do as he doesn't do web dev) in exchange of a referral fee specified in a contract between him and I.

 

How much do you think this fee should be ?

No more than 5%, given that they're approaching him and he only has to forward them on to you.

 

Also make sure it's specified that you only pay referral for projects you actually take on, otherwise you'll be stuck paying for "I want the next Facebook for £20 and a packet of nuts".

Only ever offer a referral payment for successful job referrals.

 

I currently do a lot of jobs from several people dotted about Europe but always make sure you set the terms, the job must be completed and payments made to yourself before you even think about giving any money to the referee.

Whilst it can work, I much prefer people to recommend me because I do a great job, NOT because they may get a few quid.

I always give people 10% of the project total for all referrals - 10% isn't a huge amount off the total considering you may not have had the work without the referral and if the job is say £2000, then £200 in their pocket is a nice little bonus and they're likely to do it again

 

I only pay up once the initial invoice (deposit) has been paid and the job has started.
