Company Sick Pay

Featured Replies

Morning Guys and Girls

Just a quick poll really to see how many people don't get sick pay.

This is company sick pay rather than SSP.

I recently had to take 2 days off which included a doctors visit and antibiotics which I later found out would result in 2 days deductions.

Is this normal?

Pretty normal I'm afraid. A lot of small companies will say sick pay is discretionary. Public Sector companies tend to be the most generous when it comes to sick pay - I think teachers get 26 weeks full pay and 26 weeks half pay!

Really depends on the company, I can't say I've ever worked anywhere that didn't pay me sick pay in full but then I've never worked for a 'small' business other than my own.

The last bank I Project Managed for paid up to 2 years ... nice, if that's your sort of thing.

Ha! Well, being contagious isn't a reason not to go to work; it's easier to get to the "office" - there are legit reasons as well as the prospect of being skint.

I'm pretty sure that most companies will only pay sick pay after a set amount of days off?

That's normally smaller businesses.

The smallest company I ever worked for had circa 80 staff and my contract was up to 3 months on full pay, 3 months on half pay.

I was a contractor (middle and project management) for a long time so I hear you, two members of my staff took upwards of two weeks a year, looking at the records they were doing this for many years running. In fact one of the guys had a freakishly high 'Monday sick' record. Funny that.

When it comes to minimum service requirements it usually applies to the minions.

On the flipside the same is true of notice periods, most of mine were 3-6 months (permanent posting) whereas my staff a mere month.

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't get sick pay. I think the only place I have ever got sick pay was on my university work placement.

Seems reasonable, most places of employment have a 3 day rule in which you have to be off for the first three days then you usually get company sick pay depending on how long you have been an employee

I get paid 26 weeks full pay, then nothing, I would for a private sector company,

I also get paid from day one, if i am also off for more than 26 weeks then i get private health cover, so it does seem to be down to company and sector you work in

Thanks for all the replies.

Sorry I didn't reply myself sooner.

I hate taking time off sick. Previously I was self employed and apart from a really nasty case of tonsilitis didn't have a day off in 5 years. Above anything else it's really boring sitting around the house.

The days off I had recently were again for something particularily nasty. I absolutely despise taking antibiotics so thats how bad it was. It seems stupid that if I'd had the week off I would have got sick pay.

I'm a freelancer and never had known about sick pays, but if it does requires days just to get paid then I think it would be really awful.
