May 15, 200818 yr I'm just curious if anyone else here is at University, and if so which one? I'll be going into the third year of my Multimedia Graphics degree in Septemer (*fingers crossed*) at Staffordshire University.
May 15, 200818 yr I'm just finishing off third year physics degree at Royal Holloway in Surrey. I kinda want to do a course in some form of multimedia/design though. Does yours have a lot of web related stuff in Cabbage? "pupil" would describe me better What year/grade are you then?

May 16, 200818 yr I'm a post grad, but only got my dissertation left now. I can't afford the debt that comes with being a student. Rachael, not that I know anything about you or your situation, and you didn't ask for my advice but, of all the loans and debts you'll get in your life (car finance, mortgage, wedding loan whatever) student loans are the cheapest. Plus you only ever have to pay them back if you make a certain amount of money, unlike other loans where you're roped in no-matter-what. I know folk who went to uni and took out student loans even though they didn't need them, whacked them in an ISA and made a tidy sum in interest cos student loan interest is lower. Not to mention that you can get all the free overdrafts you'll ever want (and they last for a while after you finish too so you can earn enough to pay them back). Maybe all that sounds too good to be true, but I just finished my 4th yr of uni, and I'm not feeling at all panicky about the money!

However be a bit careful about overdrafts, one of my housemates overdrafts expired as soon as his last loan payment came in which I thought was pretty bad. It's not nice seeing myself £12000 in the red on paper though. Should be £9000 at this point but I did one year of Computer Networking (Bsc) before doing my current course, I changed because I realised I was spending more time on my "hobby" than my actual course. My current course basicaly covers everything multimedia related; video, photography, sound, graphic design, web design, web programming and creating performance pieces. In the second year you get to specialise into one area, i've pretty much specialised into web design and web programming, although I still know enough about graphic design to hold my own. I'm absolutely terrible at video production though >_>.
May 16, 200818 yr I'm in my second year in a FdSc Web Design course at the University of Bedfordshire, it's not even funny how bad it is. I will be going into the third year of BSc Computer Science next year so at least I will come out with a full degree. When choosing a course I found the that the issue with web design is whether it should be a BSc or BA, and clearly it is a huge mix. I chose BSc because I thought I would learn more practical and commercially viable things such as programming languages etc. I figured the design side can't necessarily be taught, only practised (I was originally on an Art and Design course but found their 'airy fairy' thinking to be irritating, didn't actually teach me anything I could go away with and say I know this or that.)

May 16, 200818 yr I can't afford the debt that comes with being a student. I'll second what others have said, that the loan is the cheapest you'll ever get. I'm not sure if it still applies, but when I started you could also get extra grants (ie free money) depending on circumstances, including your families income. I got London weighting and the max possible loan, so am in more debt than most people I know, but am not worried as I only have to pay when I can afford to. I had a slight panic about my overdraft when I maxed it last term, but natwest are cool and said that they will actually increase it, while staying interest free, when I graduate! Provided I keep my account with them of course Yep, that's right, 6th Form, or A Levels you are in... I however am even lower I'm starting to feel old...

Bloody hell some people get all the skillz! How do you manage the work load with your hobbies? My med student friends never did anything but study
August 7, 200818 yr Currently studying part time for a diploma in IT apps at Birkbeck College University of London - moduels mysql, php, javascript, php and mysql part two, xml, flash & fireworls, flash & actionscript then finally e-commerce systems. They recommed two years part time for 8 modules, I'm covering 8 in 10 months because of the way the modules fall across the year, a late start this year and the fatc the diploma changes after 2008/09 year. so busy with the study had to turn down freelance work. It's a good course, did a post grad in web design and development also at birkbeck last year - really excellent course, very thorough, xhtml/css, usability, acessibility, project management, photoshop and image ready etc. Plan to then go on and do an 'airy fairy' design course to complete a fulld egree in CATS points. On the subject of 'airy fairy' design courses I do think they are more than valid if you want to be a serious designer. Theory, history of design, concepts etc are part and parcel. My other half was a very, very good graphics designer before taking redundancy after 20 years. Her knowledge of design begun at Art College and her advice to me is often invaluable, excuse the cliche but she wouldn't have got where she got without doing the airy fairy stuff. It's one thing to scan the social network and blogging sites and pick up onm the current vogue or trend, it's quite another to have an in depth knowqledge of graphic design that you can apply to different websites - hence why i'd like to go on and do such a course.
August 7, 200818 yr Im a student studying towards a BTEC in 3D Design at ThamesValley Univerisity in Reading. Just finished my first year and looking forward to the second and final year. The course has kinda sucked hard because 2 months into the course the head of program had a stroke which meant the course just crumbled. This was also mainly due to the present staff not following the curriculum and generally being compeletly disorganized. It was a real shame because I found the first 2 months to be a brilliant mix of Product, interior and digital design. So next year we are getting almost all new teachers who already teach Degree subjects in design. Should be fun!

August 23, 200817 yr I am an old hag doing the second year of digital media bachelor. Ahh... being a student is wonderful, and I am glad I am doing it now, instead of when I was 20. This term: media science, TV and film production, drama. Next term: game programming with flash, graphic design, intercultural communication..aaahhh...
