  2. hahaha - next time, I'll play the offended, start crying, calling names, for the love of my ipad ;-)

    Things change fast, so show your portfolio if it is reasonably finished. A comment on the test site: very mac, but the hardware and tools of a designer is probably not very interesting for customers. In fact, it sort of makes a statement you may be better without. Like it though.

    First, I must say I find your blog post a little whiney. The problem of saying that, is that I then may classify as a snob. And if so, I have lost the discussion before it started. I'm with notbanksy, I cannot agree or disagree, and his is a good point about those that have honed skills for years, competing with photoshoppers. Snobbery is a rather subjective term, and maybe these people are snobs, maybe they are pig headed, or maybe they actually know their stuff. If they cannot accept other viewpoints, they are of course idiots. No argument there. But not everything could or should be a committee decition. Problem with graphic design is that everybody can have an opinion, and everybody has a nephew who did something cool in MSpaint. Few lay people stick their nose into how the busdriver, butcher, chef, plumber, architect or engineer do their work. You say that a majority of people are down to earth and "normal", and that is a statment I cannot agree with. Common sense is not so common, after all. If it was, this work would be an awful lot easier, and an awful lot more boring. For me, this is a classic: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/design_hell There is a lot of rubbish out there, and if you are not allowed to say that, then taste, design and choices becomes irrelevant, if everything is supposed to have equal value. You touch the never-ending form-function debate too. That is one that bores me, as to me it is obvious that neither form nor function is the most important part. Or, both form and function is essential; there is no contradiction there, if you want something optimal. They need to work together, they cannot be separated. You cannot develop something, and then add graphic design as a coat of paint - not with great success. I can of course understand that you find it frustrating working with people if you feel they look down upon you, your work, or others with opposing opinions. Yes, dear Mr. Customer, you can have a pink background with a lime green flashing gif. If that is what you think your users like. But I'd rather not make it. I would like to know what you (all) think about these two: http://barebente.com/blog/2008/07/design-observer/ http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2006/07/how_to_live_hap.html
  5. I agree, it seems the times they are a-changing. I am a rather erratic poster & lurker here, but yes, it has struck me too. Things change; is indeed the case. No point "pining for the fjords", it's how the world works. I miss a bit of nonsense, though.
  6. Hi there - eerrm.. I don't understand what you want to do, it seems to me that the ebay and your menu are fundamentally the same? You either got it working, or I don't understand what you want.
  7. Class! I have one. I am not a man, not in business, hopeless with money - I thought it was funny, and in a way makes sense.
  8. Doesn't have to be that tricky. Depends on how complex your exsisting site is, and if you can find a template that is structurally pretty close, it shouldn't be all that hard. Best of luck.
  9. CSS

    ......again, mind you, it will not work in a bunch of versions of different browsers.
  10. CSS

    boblet replied to craigpettit's topic in Frontend
    well. depends on what you want. You take this, and adjust the values. background-color: white; -moz-border-radius: 10px; -webkit-border-radius: 10px; padding: 10px; -moz-box-shadow: 5px 5px 50px #C0C0C0; -webkit-box-shadow: 5px 5px 50px #C0C0C0;
  11. CSS

    For it to work in all browsers, you should do it with images, but you can do it in CSS3 with code. Mind you, IE and Opera will not read it. http://www.webmaster-source.com/2009/09/02/css3-drop-shadow/

    ... a little post about travels before internet: http://barebente.com/blog/2010/07/travels-without-internet/
  13. I agree with that, in fact. That it all goes through iTunes annoys me a good deal, and though the one I have is mostly an experiment, I might end up doing some design on some apps and playing on the shadowy side. I know everybody gets all love-hate with apple, getting their knickers in a twist one way or the other. But it is in fact a nifty little thing.
  14. I have one. I don't use it all that much, but when it is useful, it is brilliant.
  15. Not entirely sure if I understand what you want, but if you increase padding, it would show the whole image?
