Inspiration? No idea..

Featured Replies

Hey designers,

I work about 12 hours / day and sometimes I feel I don't have more idea, inspiration. I would like to design nice and clean web site, with eyecatching details but I don't have any idea.

Did you feel that? What did you do?

We've all been there. I like bestwebgallery.com but sometimes I find it easier to browse themes on themeforest.net because of the categories they have makes it easier to find the inspiration I'm looking for.

Or sometimes its best to just take a break, go outside take a walk around for a bit and come back to it feeling a bit refreshed.

So we all do same thing :) I always browse dribbble for new ideas. Thanks for the answers.

yeah robbie is right, 12 hours later your brain is probably running on fumes right now. You cant be expected to do something to the best of your ability if your brain is fried.

Working for 12 hours is really horrible. You need to take scheduled breaks to keep your mind in working condition or else its no doubt going to be blank. You can take some small breaks in between if you think working 12 hours is a mandate fro you. This will help you divert your focus from work for a while and so getting back to work won't be a headache.

No doubt others will disagree but I'd say 12 hours a day is ridiculous, no wonder you can't think of anything, you're probably fit to drop!

Get away from your computer buddy, rest up, exercise, live your life. It's a job and like any job once you've done a lot of hours you need a break..if I was a driving instructor would you want me to teach you when I've been at it for twelve hours? Tired, hard to focus, imagination zonked from lack of sleep..?

Sometimes you simply don't have a choice and I don't think it's that clear cut! I have staff to pay, they have families to feed, they rely on me to man the helm and that often takes 10-15 hour days seven days a week.

We're slowing raising our rate to compensate i.e. less work, same income, but it's taking time to balance because we have a full order book for the year and beyond.

I can easily work 8am until midnight if I have to, but I don't do design all day long, I manage a small business, I tender, I write contracts etc.

If you're pure design I'd suggest you force yourself to take a mid-morning and mid-afternoon break of 15-20 minutes with a drink, stand outside and refresh your gills, if its raining get under an umbrella - I find rain oddly stimulating and therapeutic, for some people it makes them want to pee.

Speaking from experience you need to try to avoid working past midnight, it's better to get up early and keep a disciplined routine than to burn the midnight oil and sleep in the following day.

If you're really struggling to focus it's probably fatigue so change your scenery, take a break, go for a walk, visit a friend or family, but avoid staring at screens.

The reason I say this is as per my above post, I work hard and I work long hours. From experience I've found people need to avoid working past midnight as it's detrimental to their performance.

I agree with you that its better to get up early and work rather than working late in the night. The human body is balanced in that particular way only to work during the day and sleep during night. But I believe there are situations when you do not have any other option but to go against the natural system and subsequently people face the outcome.

@MMMEdia My comment was aimed towards the guy who started this thread; I understand (and do it myself sometimes) long hours when you're working on admin etc but would never design for so long because the attention to detail, ideas..they would just be embers and not the flames I prefer and my clients pay for.

You're quite right, my post sounds a bit like someone's parent telling them off .. and I don't even have any pesky kids!

Design as you say shouldn't be a strained task, if it becomes that way do yourself a favour and do something else or take a break.

Rightly have you said designs should come to your mind on their own. If you keep chasing them then I believe it will not be called creative.
