April 2, 200818 yr I've just signed up as a beta tester on searchme.com Just wondering if any of you guys had had a look at it. Basically its a new search engine where you get to see a thumbnail preview of the results to see whether or not it is of interest to you (relevant) The bit I like so far is the auto-category feature that splits your search term into relevant categories. They only have about a billion pages indexed at the moment so a lot of searches aren't so good but it has a chance I think. I'll let you know how it goes at the end of the testing!
April 2, 200818 yr Yeh I was looking at it last night. Nice idea if you have a decent connection, and it will be much better whne they're indexed a lot more sites. I had the crawler from these guys suck up 10gb data transfer on one site a while back so if you start gettings their crawler on your site keep checking your logs!

Do you think it places a greater emphasis on making your site look good to attract the average searcher or not?
April 3, 200818 yr I don't like this idea, it just seems to be jumping on the coverflow bandwagon. Personally I don't see what is wrong with text based searching, it's quick and it does the job. The amount of data it will have to scrape off your server is worrying as well, I bet people start blocking their spider. I'm also curious as to how often they update the images of the websites, as it will be pretty useless for searching often updated sites if the screen shots are days/weeks old.

June 27, 200818 yr Author After trying it on and off for about a month, I finally decided it wasn't for me and haven't bothered with it since. It certainly had a novelty factor but I guess I'm too entrenched in normal text-search for it to be a viable alternative. The fact that the number of indexed sites was quite low didn't help either but then it was in beta. Perhaps, as has been said, in a few years time something like this might take off but not just yet.
June 27, 200818 yr Anybody who wants to try this without this search engine could use the cooliris addon for Firefox. Does the same thing but it's built into the browser, to be honest it's not for me though.

Positive: Gives you an idea of how much effort is put into a site. The design will convince me whether it's worth taking a closer look. left/ right arrow scrolling Gives you time to think rather than opening tens of windows jut to find the one site you like/ want Negative: Old screengrabs Badly compressed screengrabs The wordpress error page is a classic example of how to loose business. The grab might be a few weeks old and only happened for a second but I wouldn't bother clicking to find out more Intensive power usage Fun for a while but slowly wears off Will I use it again? Nope.

June 28, 200818 yr It will only succeed if the search algorithms are powerful and can come close to matching those of Google. It doesn't matter how well presented your results are if the content isn't what you're looking for.
June 28, 200818 yr PicLens also does this same kind of featuring. Also there is clearly no algorithm for this search engine. I rank #1 in GOOGLE for Seth M. Goldstein and I'm at the end of the search in here. My company Goldstein Media doesn't come up #1 when I type in Goldstein Media which is total BS. It's 12 slides down. Oh and here's the clincher. It's my old site view. It hasn't be that design in at least 4 months! WTF this site sucks monkey ******.
