So my girlfriend has just bought hosting with justhost, and after paying £35 for the years hosting, she was taken to a screen saying that Domain Privacy, Spam Assassin and a few other things would cost extra (how annoying).

 

Can anyone tell me if Domain privacy is recommended, and what it's for?

And is charging for spam assassin a bit tight or is it common practice? I'm sure I didn't have to pay for it.

 

Either way I don't like Justhost's way of doing things, extras should be configured before checkout IMHO, not thrust in front of you after you've paid

When you register a domain name, the contact information can be seen via a WHOIS database. See http://www.whois.net/

 

Domain privacy will basically prevent your details from showing on WHOIS databases.

 

It's not common to charge for SpamAssassin.

 

Are you looking for a better offer?

Some sites offer free WHOIS protection such as 'namecheap'. WHOIS basically tells someone who owns the domain such as microsoft.com would be owned by the microsoft corporation, It might show the address aswell of the buisness / customer, I'd suggest you get it, but it's not VITAL.

 

Spam Assassin would most likely be a e-mail anti-spam I would assume, Again not a vital feature.

Domain privacy often referred to as "ID Protect" will hide your personal details (name, address etc) on a WHOIS lookup. If the domain you are hosting is going to be offering a service/selling a product you should not enable it. It's entirely up to you if you want it, are you bothered about your details being made public? They can be easily obtained anyway, without having a domain name

 

Spam filtering usually comes as standard with hosting, SpamAssasin is free software

No real reason for going with Justhost to be honest, just the luck of wading through what turned up on google.

Providers that offer "unlimited" should be avoided, as no such thing exists (you couldn't order a hard drive with unlimited space could you?)

Just a little extra note, if you don't want to purchase spam protection from your web host but want good anti-spam software, I can recommend Google Apps (Free Edition) which has good anti-spam software inbuilt, you just need to move your mail solution over to them.

Charging extra for spam-assasin is a damn liberty, especially as its part of cpanel, is free already and carries pretty much no overhead unless your expecting 10,000 emails a day???

 

Especially as they host out of the US, and not the UK and seemingly just like all the others in the U.S, they oversell like crazy..

 

Echo what others have said too, the "unlimiteds" dont exist, and while you might not be worried about your own usage, its what your hosted neighbours will be trying to do that can affect you and selling an entire server for the cost of a coffee often attracts the "undesirables"

 

At least they offer an "anytime refund" so you can switch to a UK host and get your money back..
