August 15, 200917 yr Hey all, Some time ago I made a basic 'hobby' website for my wifes car, www.pamsghia.co.uk and it is hosted by heart internet. I have had no issues with Heart at all and am now looking to host my website, which again is another car site. I will basically be using the same layout as for Pams site but it will have far more pictures and possibly some video content. I just want a no frills, unlimited host that will hopefully cause me no problems. I see heart are offering a package for £2.49 p/m which looks good. Just wondered if you guys knew of any thing similar but cheaper? I know you usually get what you pay for but I saw something for £1.98 p/m with a free domain name....cant remeber where now though! TIA.
August 16, 200917 yr I'd honestly be careful with unlimited hosting providers, there is always a catch and eventually it catches up with you - normally when you least expect it! We can provide you with hosting for less than £2 per month take a look at http://geeksrv.net/packages.php - We do domains too but not free
August 16, 200917 yr Hi Tia, You may be better off looking at what we can provide as freelancers. Alot of us have resellers/VPS (im just about to get mine) and as your site is very unlikely to use alot of space or bandwidth, we could probably come to an agreement. I personally wouldnt have any problem hosting both of your sites (so £5/month with heart) for £40/year or £25 for just the one. Reaper

Reaper Reaper, so for £25 you would basically give me what Heart are offering for £2.49 pm? Im new to all this but I assume I still get full control over my account and log in the same way I do with pams site to upload or modify it in any way? if so, sounds pretty good. BTW, the TIA above was just me saying Thanks In Advance, lol. Cheers jotto.
August 16, 200917 yr Hi Jotto, take a look at the link in my signature, they offer fantastic hosting for £14.99 per year .
August 16, 200917 yr Hello Jotto, Sorry for the TIA mistake, it was early in the morning Yes, i would offer you enough space for yourself, and your own login area, exactly how heart is. The big difference would be speed. You get what you pay for. You will find alot of companies "oversell" their space. If you have 200 clients sharing a connection, or 20 clients sharing a connection - it can make a huge difference. Reaper
August 16, 200917 yr Hello, I would be able to offer reliable hosting on my Direct Admin (www.directadmin.com) server, located in the Gigenet Datacenter, US. If you want, shoot me a PM or email me (contact @ rydgroup .net) and we can work something out. Peter

Just to ask how is it that you guys can afford such good offers at such low prices? Is there a catch?
August 26, 200917 yr Nope no catch, you purchase you get what you ordered We've been providing hassle free hosting for 12 months now so we must be doing something right
August 30, 200916 yr Nope no catch, you purchase you get what you ordered We've been providing hassle free hosting for 12 months now so we must be doing something right Looks highly oversold given the amount of bandwidth on offer for those prices. No offence intended, but if your using HP DL380(g5)'s, with lets say 300GB drives maximum x 8, in RAID6, then that gives you 6 drives of 300GB max, so thats a maximum of 36 clients per-server, at £2 each minimum...., or less than 36 clients per-server should any of them upgrade. Do you know how busy one of those servers will be if you actually had 30+ clients using 50GB+ a month of traffic, even with dual quad core CPU's? So where do you make any money if your only taking a minimum of £72 per-server, per month as you "dont overload or oversell" your servers??? 1 rack in LHC costs a lot per month, and even if you did somehow manage to squeeze in 21 servers into a 42U cabinet, thats still only making you £1512 a month (Gross), for managing 21 servers. So where exactly do you make ANY profit at all, as from your figures, you really will need to jam a cabinet full just to barely cover the DC costs, so then you need wages, your own office costs and more... I'm just curious as to how you break even without any overselling, let alone make any profit? Also, why the name change from Bubblerack to geeksrv after only 11 months?
August 30, 200916 yr Looks highly oversold given the amount of bandwidth on offer for those prices. It's not highly oversold, but you are welcome to believe the service is highly oversold No offence intended, but if your using HP DL380(g5)'s, with lets say 300GB drives maximum x 8, in RAID6, then that gives you 6 drives of 300GB max, so thats a maximum of 36 clients per-server, at £2 each minimum...., or less than 36 clients per-server should any of them upgrade. Do you know how busy one of those servers will be if you actually had 30+ clients using 50GB+ a month of traffic, even with dual quad core CPU's? Yes, we don't claim to own our own hardware We're open an honest about that fact. We use Virtual Dedicated Servers - The VDS's we use out perform some of the dedicated servers available from some providers for £40+ p/m who use dedicated servers provided by the likes of PoundHost and Rapidswitch and those over the pond who charge more than what we do for a so called "premium service" We've no problem about being open with our users, they don't have problems with our servers or any performance issues as you will find from the reviews on WHT, UKBF, FWS and other places. I know it was late also when you posted, but how do you work out that we can only get a maximum of 36 clients on the server? If we base the product offerring on what you quoted and using our GS-1 package as an example diskspace wise 36 x 1.5GB is 54GB so that's well under the specifications you mentioned. Based on what you quoted 300GB we could get around 185 sites on that offering without overselling and leaving 20GB + for the Operating System. That would then be an income of around £368 p/m per server if we we're basing things on your maths, that's not a bad return from those accounts But alas, that's not our specifications so we don't make that per VDS we use. We do give large amounts of data transfer, we don't currently used over 30% of our available allotment per month on any of our 3 VDS's, what we claim is not to over crowd servers - and frankly we don't - but i'll allow you to make your own mind up on what we do and don't do. We could certainly make more money by taking one large dedicated server for £100 p/m but we prefer to give our clients a decent service, and that is what they get So where do you make any money if your only taking a minimum of £72 per-server, per month as you "dont overload or oversell" your servers??? Our VDS's are evenly balanced, we have 3 currently serving our clients and have plenty of resources available Diskspace, CPU and Data Transfer wise. We get dedicated resources, and according to our cacti graphs we currently under utilise these dedicated resources by 60% - so yes, our prices are low but our clients do not suffer due to low prices. Mercury currently is using on average 35% CPU, 23.7% RAM, 49% of diskspace - We aren't adding anymore to this VDS. Simba currently is using on average 15% CPU, 38% RAM, 29% of diskspace - We aren't adding anymore on to this VDS. Tia currently is using on average 5% CPU, 17% RAM, 5% diskspace - Current server being used for adding accounts. We use a highly respected provider of VDS's and not some low end provider who crams lot's of OpenVZ containers on each node to make a quick buck 1 rack in LHC costs a lot per month, and even if you did somehow manage to squeeze in 21 servers into a 42U cabinet, thats still only making you £1512 a month (Gross), for managing 21 servers. So where exactly do you make ANY profit at all, as from your figures, you really will need to jam a cabinet full just to barely cover the DC costs, so then you need wages, your own office costs and more... I'm just curious as to how you break even without any overselling, let alone make any profit? We do not have the same overheads with using VDS's provided by our provider Not everyone needs an office, a large number of providers, including a few that are bigger than WESH don't have offices. We are a small family run setup, no wage is currently drawn from GeekSRV and as we are not large enough to be full-time (we're a startup, and not all startup's draw a wage from the start ), which doesn't mean our clients suffer before you jump all over that subject We don't punch above our weight, we do not claim to be a big provider - we just get on with providing a decent service to those who choose to use us. We might not be every bodies cup of tea, we seem to be right for those who use us though Also, why the name change from Bubblerack to geeksrv after only 11 months? Because we prefer the name and since the change it's been far more successful for client signups Hopefully i've answered your questions

And this has exactly what to do with the original post? What gives you the right to question another members business? Well done to Ed for being so honest, I'd have personally told you to keep your nose out!
August 30, 200916 yr I have to side with Ed here. Looks highly oversold given the amount of bandwidth on offer for those prices. I recall you also stating the same about us when we first started out publicity offering hosting. If I was Ed in this situation I would be infuriated with the following comment: Do you know how busy one of those servers will be if you actually had 30+ clients using 50GB+ a month of traffic, even with dual quad core CPU's? Its as if you are talking down on him as if he is some fly-by-night hosting provider knowing nothing. GeekSRV has an excellent reputation in the budget hosting market and is one of the few companies of this type that actually provide a decent service with a HIGHLY knowledgeable admin team.
August 30, 200916 yr Hi Jotto. I offer a very simple package. £1 per month for 20MB server space and 200MB bandwidth. From looking at your previous project website, this would probably be plenty for you. I'm offering very cheap hosting because I provide very little server space. But it would be ideal for your requirements. Full MySQL, PHP, unlimited email accounts and even Cron support included. Follow the link... http://www.goodworkjim.com/hosting/

Well done to Ed for being so honest, I'd have personally told you to keep your nose out! Thanks, I could of - but being honest about our setup is what we have no problem with. I have to side with Ed here. I recall you also stating the same about us when we first started out publicity offering hosting. Thanks Rob Wesh, I'd also like to add - just because your price for 1/4, 1/2 or full rack with your supplier is that amount doesn't mean ours or our provider would be that amount. Our provider may have a much better deal with Gyron than what you have with UK Dedicated or any other supplier you use Not everyone is on standard pricing / feature sets - so working out costs based on your own may not be 100% feasible. I'm sure lots of providers have custom solutions / deals with their provider and honestly, we're no different
August 30, 200916 yr I think that's more than enough host banter - can we keep this thread on track to what the OP wants. @jotto - if you were happy with Heart for the other site why not use them for your own site as well? Just over £30.year is not a bad price
August 30, 200916 yr Does Heart not offer parked domains? Can Jotto not just register a domain name and point it to a parked domain on his existing Heart package? I think £30 per year is alot of money for a site which looks like it only requires a few MB...
August 31, 200916 yr I was actually referring to it being oversold based on the bandwidth allocations, not the disk-space. Disk space isnt the major factor, its bandwidth that goes hand in hand with resource usage such as CPU/Memory, and again, its not intended as any sort of "bashing", it was purely a question out of curiosity. Rob, I wasnt questioning the admin knowledge at all, nor their reputation, as long as they are happy doing what they are doing then thats cool.
