Wots the point, to be different you have to be the same. #

This page is deliberately against the principles of good web design; firstly it is very big, secondly every page is really the first page, it is not in Frames just looks like it and that is so nineties, third, its got words in it, 10,000 of my own carefully considered words, images behind those words and a naff movie to brainwash readers into thinking symmetry has everything to do with the way you think.

I already know what you think.

The design is appalling and the code is horrifying.

I think that is rather uncalled for.

Whilst you may not agree with Meshach's comments, personal attacks like that are unnecessary, and just lead to arguments etc.

Bizarre way to ask for feedback. The site is definitely designed against the principles of good web design - but I don't know why? Is there a reason for why not? What is the site trying to achieve?

Do you want constructive advice?

Do you want constructive advice?

I've had all the unconstructive advice I can stomach. It is supposed to be different. I deliberately chose to do things I was told were wrong in a stupid course where I was not rated as the best, but after re-assessment by a university was the only one considered to have passed.

I can tell the difference between constructive and unconstructive, and some here give worthwhile advice while others are just pretentious; for instance writing to W3C strict document types really requires that portfolios pass validation.

Two questions:

1. What kind of reaction are you hoping for? Your initial post isn't really clear about why you started this thread.

2. Why post if you already know what we think?

I'm slightly miffed by this whole thread.

If I understand correctly;

You've dared to be different by doing everything you were told was wrong?

P.S. I agree with Scott 100%. That personal attack on Meshach was uncalled for.

He is a very very talented web designer and saying he has no understanding of coding or design is unnecessary. I think he deserves a full and frank apology. If anything we should be saying that to you by the look of that site. It's plain bizarre what you've said. But hey, I suppose I could apply your logical thinking to lots of fields eh? May I also ask, what has Mathematically Retarded got to do with anything?

Also, If you've had all the unconstructive comments you can stomach, why post a thread provoking that kind of response?

P.P.S. How can you say we're being pretentious if we don't know what feedback to give you? We can't give you constructive criticism because the thread you've posted seems to be a total joke to you.

Just shows you the education system is going to pot.

The important thing you said is; it is full of mathematics, 10,000 of my words and proofs. When I went to university you needed 3 A levels and at my university they had to be first attempts taken simultaneously at double A grade in maths. I got four when A levels were harder and passed the university entrance exam which is harder than A level.

The degree of Pure Mathematics was a 48 hour a week three year course where I passed with highest scores ever seen in many subjects including a computing course.

[i should point out I suffered serious brain trauma when I was run over ten years ago, but I am still above average IQ just]

Now I tried to do a tosspot course in Internet studies at the local tosspot college where I was confronted by bigotry and even asked to leave very early as others were, but I continued in one course I paid for where I found favour being given to the middle classes already employed in computing. But the teacher was a trainee, and when she was assessed they found I was the only one to have actually passed and since the course was validated at HND level the others had to repeat the course.

I decided to do an OU course at a higher level instead, they allow people like me to start at the top level and I passed with ease.

I came here for IDEAS of how to make MY DESIGN work, and a few have been helpful but I don't think just 'it looks awful ' is constructive advice, considering the time it has taken and I've even had to design and build a computer to do it.

But some in here remind me of those local college students who thought they were superior simply because daddy bought them a computer when they were three, but are unable to see that even with all that financial help were unable to pass A levels sufficiently highly to get to a proper university, like Oxbridge.

your images are of terrible quality and are highly pixelated, this gives the design a very unprofessional look.

The background image you are using sometimes distorts the text, so that isn't good for the usability of the site

The design aesthetic of the site isn't that great because nothing really matches each other, as has already been said there is a difference between trying to be different just for the sake of it and being different because it works...you may be trying to be different but the site still needs to work on a visual aspect and be user friendly...for example what is the point in the fake frames, why should people be forced to have your menu a the top of the page when they click on the w3c validation link.

Just because your site validates to even a strict standard doesn't mean that your site is coded well...validation only marks it up against some things and as such just because you meet that criteria doesn't mean that your site is accessibility friendly....in fact your coding is far from it.

If this was just some sort of test to prove to people that you don't have to follow rules that were set out to help web accessibility, I am sorry to say you have failed on both a design and coding side. As what you have created is neither that usable, designed well or meet good accessibility rules. It may look how you want it to in a browser but you have missed the bigger picture. Yes there are words on your page, but what is the point in having 10,000 words, if the design of your site gets in the way of reading those words

Actually looking at your code in more detail, just because you are using JS to create your frames doesn't mean that you aren't using frames....so stop deluding yourself, you are using farmes, they are just called something different in the code  Plus you have taken away my ability to open up links in different windows, so I HAVE to have your menu at the top of the page...well done on taking away the users right to choose how to view other sites that you have linked to, great to see user-friendly sites still exist.

I would now go on to how I feel you could improve, but from your responses above you already think you know it all and also what other people are going to say, so I won't bother. Good luck with your site, and hopefully you will soon see that you should think about the users and not just your desperate need to be different....by all means be different just think of your end users instead of just your self.

EDIT: I just read your post above mine and if you want help on ways to make your site better and will listen then people here will happily give you that. You are right people just saying it looks crap won't help you. But your attitude to that will annoy people, and reading some of your posts in here did annoy me and made me feel as though you were a know-it-all who didn't really want help. So I am sorry for my assumption :)

The trouble is Dizi, I have a sneaking suspicion that he isn't actually posting to get ideas for changing the site's design or coding. I don't think he has any intention of making changes or learning/applying good design & coding practice - he's posting to see if he can wind us up (I think that's sometimes called trolling). And he seems to have succeeded...

If I'm wrong, I'll happily admit it, but I have a feeling I'm right.

You are right that you are wrong, and I don't pretend to know it all; but the first time I put it up the first replies were not helpful at all.

I am learning javascript from the suck it and see method and I made a lot of mistakes at first, I was trained in fortran on a mainframe so long ago it is ancient history, later I did a course in C++ and I would like to bring the principles of OOP to my coding, but most things are specific and procedural methods adequate.

The menu; I wanted to give the feel of only one page and the ability to easily navigate plus hitting the back button gets you straight out.

I have as a result of this forum faded the backgrounds, but I don't want it to look like any other math site like Wikipedia and I'm not exactly the best graphic artist; the tools I have to learn to use as well.

Another good feature of this site was the pointing towards Gimp 2, but I've only managed to draw a tin of baked beans in Inkscape.

As for the other coders; I'm just giving as good as I get, I'm just showing I too can be a pig and just say something is rubbish without any reason whatsoever.

So am I right in assuming that you see this site as a way of proving to the bigoted education system that even though you have suffered major brain trauma, you can still be inteligent, articulate, and produce something that is cutting edge and different showcasing your mathmatical theories?

Help us out, we are all trying to understand but you are not making it easy. Tell us in black and white in a short sentance what you want to gain from this thread.

None of this has anything to do with web design whatsoever so why are you even posting it in this thread? It seems like you just want to boast about your education. If you really were such an enigma then surely you would know not to have "Page 1" and "Page 2" as a navigation, not to use images for navigation, but oh wait you were being quirky right?

Other than this I'd just like to echo what Dizi had to say.

Yes quirky. It is a narrow minded monologue and I wanted to create something different I could be proud of. I have been away from mathematics and embarrassed that I can no longer do what I previously found relatively easy. It is a relearning exercise that failed because my brain injury impedes any new original thought, and everything in there I did a hundred years ago in my own way.

In fact my definition of symmetry is too restrictive and somehow I have to make it much more general and talk about endomorphisms, trouble is that I only glossed over endomorphisms at university and now I have to come up with a definition and explanation.

Then apart from a couple of proofs I can't be bothered to do much more than copy and give credit of course it is done, and with the useful bits of advice about image implemented this will be the last web page I will do.

So after a years struggle I thought I might get some good advice about presentation, but from some I only got attacked without any helpful comments at all.

Some are very helpful here although I get the impression they don't want to be, such as the one with the nodding cat, you see I can't even remember names longer than a few seconds.

Oh yes one sentence, yes it is to prove to myself I can still think.

yeah I don't want to be helpful at all that is why I posted a long post in your thread, telling you what was wrong with your site.

I just don't see the point in wasting my time saying how you can improve when obviously you think your site is great... you want to be different with this site and that is great, but you shouldn't sacrifice usability for that.

You mentioned how you thought people posting in here were pretentious, well I think that the most pretentious person in here is you. You feel like you are owed something, you come in here asking for advice and then you blow it off like you know everything, you go on and on about your education, yes it is something to be proud of, but you have to understand that a lot of people on this forum are also educated and some of them are even educated in web design and development. So it isn't as if you are getting advice from people who don't know what they are talking about....so stop acting like the almighty know it all. If you want advice people will gladly give it to you, if you just wanted to come here to get your ego stroked I am sorry but with that site you have there is no way that many people who are educated in web design are going to stroke it for you.

You will find you were attacked, because you took it upon yourself to attack an upstanding member of this community first.

Yes what he said may have been a little harsh, but being a person of high intelligence, I would think it beneath you to "fight fire with fire"

Am afraid attacks like this will not be tolerated here, and I suggest maybe you apologise to some of the members and get back to the topic.

I said I thought you was helpful; in fact the abrasive style of the posting was an attempt to get useful help such as yours, where previously I got a lot of attacks like the first one.

Now I've got to take a nap and the posting is closed.

Sorry to have been irritating but it was to get some constructive comments beyond what some said.

I'll even apologise to the first poster who I am sure is a very fine coder.

#The content of the site is not relavent, whether it be about sports, my little pony or mathmatics.

# This is the web designer forum and we pretty much base our apinions on the way you display your content.

# The sight lacks any modern concept of web design (i.e. web2.0)

# check out http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/01/31...ive-web-design/ the simplest of styles can easly be achieved to conform without being a webmaster. Its adapting these styles that makes a site unique.

- Stay happy

EDIT: dont let people get you down its not what they are trying to do.

This is how a website supposed to look like, when it's done by a mathematician. U gotta respect their gift of numerical thinking and lack of creativity.

In this subject I can only advise you to be like everyone else.

arith,

I would like to get 3 things across right now.

1. I am by no means an expert.

2. I was absolutely not attacking you. It was nothing personal.

3. I was just telling you what I think of your site.

Perhaps I should have gone in depth but there was nothing I liked about the site and I think it should be re-done.

So, it's nothing personal. I've had people say "What the hell is the meaning of this!" and "It looks like crap" to my designs.

I would at first take the critique personal like they had something against me but I soon learned that the person is trying to help me not attack me.

Good luck with your web design endeavors.

OK not to jump on the band wagon but should your code be strict and yet you have <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="StylesheetButtons.css"/> no space between href="StylesheetButtons.css" /> ending tags ...

If your trying to go against the grain! then AT LEAST make it prove a point all you have done is prove that principles of good web design is right. i spent 3 seconds clicking your links and i closed your page i did not read the wording or content as your page said skip! if you spent one year on this then thats a year waisted in my eyes nothing personal but i would be scared to post this let alone create it! ...

Hope you dont find me rude but you posted as you wanted replys and im giving it to you as i see it..

Good luck with the redesign you cant get much worse !!!

I might add that your idea of trying to tell peoeple they have been brain washed into nice style clean sites with balance is wrong i think you could go about this maybe by using exsamples that work not trying to create something thats not nice on the eye and exspecting them to read it as it stands ...

I would have used the wise words you did and made the site more easy to read as its the message in your site thats key and not the look you done you could have done this site as a exsample and put the main aspec on wording!

The main reason behind principles of good web design is to keep the people on your site and coming back... This has proved that your site will not hold peoples attention for long.....

Good point, I will attend to on my next update. It is much harder for me to adjust to the others criticisms but I will try, graphic art is not a strong point. The font-style similarly is hard because I have to choose something common to most PC's and I find it hard to tell the difference except in extreme cases.

A common theme I thought was the job of the menu, but I will think about that as well.

If you lack skills in graphic art, then perhaps concentrate on creating a layout consisting of mainly solid colours, using some kind of colour palette? For those with limited graphics skills, this kind of approach seems to work quite well.

Yeah you can get some nice colour combinations (and make patterns from them) over at www.colourlovers.com.
