Im currently working on a school website and have been working on this design i came up with about a month ago or so.

Can you please please please let me know exacly what you think of it, harsh or nice. I done care

 

I have uploaded my pervious look of this site on here about a week ago but i thought i would spice it up a little. Make it look alot happier lookin site!

UPDATE: This website is now live at www.st-pauls.surrey.sch.uk

for me it is too artificial. its definately happy looking. the navigation is whimsical, jubulant and bouncy and the site in general is fresh however overall i would say a little too cute i would estimate that this site was aimed at 2-5 yr olds and their parents from its aeshetic however i suspect that it is actually for older children who may find it a bit childish.

I have to say that I really don't like it. Sorry.

 

My thoughts are that while the navigation was a brave idea and does follow some of the trends of 2009, it is over the top and just too in your face for me.

 

The background is also a bit bold and could be a bit duller to let the content be the main focus.

 

That is my 2pence worth.

 

What I always do when starting the design for a site is think "Ok; what is the main proposition of the site?" - The proposition is really important, it is what you want the user to do when they first get to your page. That is your focal point and then build the site around that.

I actually prefer your old background. It was darker and flatter so the focus was entirely on the main content. Agree with the above 2 essentially... but I am a fan of the buttons. I'd say keep it fun, but not too cute. Kid's want cred these days!

I agree its very childish but they wernt a big fan of the old background they said it was cold and depressing, hmmm!

 

Ahh well, im starting to export the images tonight to make it live tomorrow at work, there happy so im happy i guess.

If the client is happy, you can't really alter it. You're obviously looking to deviate from the usual style of a school website, which I guess can be pulled off, but I personally don't like it.

 

Content looks fairly well laid out - not too sure how you are going to tackle the background as other web pages might be longer in depth.

 

I would also expect the school badge/logo at the top of the site.

When i was creating the banner i didnt have a good quality school logo on me so opppsie. Putting it on tomorrow

Hi Chris

School web sites can be rather difficult (as are all other sites). Normally the head teachers want something different, lending towards "childish". Kids can have interesting ideas too. I think if the school and teachers like it, then well done to you. I like your navigation idea by the way.

I don't mind it at all. Agreed with the very 'kiddy' appeal. I think that the background can be less saturated so there's more focus on content, and make the nav bar a little smaller and less shiny.

Agree with a lot of the comments, but I think it would be a lot better with a different choice of background. I'm not sure if I like the navigation or not, looks a bit too detached from the main content but that could be a nice option.

 

I think it's definitely a nice approach to a more 'comfortable' school website, and as said if the client is happy then that's the main thing!

I like your theme very much, but I'm not sure on your left bar menu it's too much colors and graphics or not, but if your client loved it this mean it's OK

The staff may like it, have you asked the parents and children?

 

I worked on a company intranet a while back and the ceo and the marketing director both had very different ideas about the design and one design would not keep them both happy. As a resolution I developed two skins and the user could choose which stylesheet they wanted to use on the site. Both very different designs and both people were happy, just a thought anyway.

Much appreciated, im affrade i couldnt take action on many of them because i didnt want to upset the headteacher

 

I've been putting it together for the last 2ish 3ish days now and i was copyin over all the old school text and going though it all make sure its all the same font etc. There is soooooooom much of it

 

It should be finished tomorrow with a bit of luck and i will most deffo post a link on here to show you all.

It's called FROG 2.0 and you can find them at http://www.frogtrade.com/.

 

Its was only built on this so that the staff that work at the school can update the website very very easly.

Ha, Learn Solid CSS , and HTML to the latest spec and ditch WYSISYG's you get nothing good out of it. and use notepad. If you write good enough code, updating the site should be easy anyways.

Hi, i agree its a mess, i dont get involved with code when using frog, the program does it all for me

 

I have solid skills in HTML/CSS and wanted to build it by typing it from scrach but NO, school wanted it in frog for the ease of editting by teachers

 

Shame really :'(

the site has a nice feel its clear but the site lacks something but cant quite put my finger on it keep up the good work

Sorry I dont like it at all. The links are too big, eyes are drawn away from the content due to excessive graphics usage, feels really dated and chunky, unlike the new web 2.0 trend.

I also know about the CODE!!!!! If any of you have even sufferend in life by using frog (myself, boo hoo) you will know that you cant change or edit the way the code looks.

Myself and the PHP/SQL etc coder want to get together and completely update the website as we both HATE it sooooooooo much and it looks cheap, tackie and also looks along the lines of a free template that has been found in a skip
