  1. Yes I had tried the $letter--; and didn't understand why it doesn't work. This method works for me though, thankyou!
  2. Sorry if there is a simple answer to this, but my PHP is poor at best I'm looping through a string incrementing characters as I go, and I need to be able to decrement them back to their original state later on in the script. Is there anyway to decrement a char so 'b' would become 'a', etc? I'm surprised you can't $letter--, as you can $letter++.. Thanks in advance.
  3. Hello all, I'm after some inspiration for diagonal line useage in backgrounds and other webpage objects. See http://nicole.cfwebtools.com/images/bg15.gif for an example of the type of lines I mean. Does anyone have any nice examples that spring to mind that they wouldn't mind posting? Thanks!
  4. I'm interested to see what steps other people here take when designing a new website. In the past I have coded alongside designing, but wish to start concentrating purely on the design first, and then code it to suit. I'm thinking something along the lines of sketch out general layout/ design on paper -> photoshop (to maybe get a feel for the layout etc, and possibly for any graphics) -> code ? Would be nice to see what steps other people take when designing their websites, as I understand a lot of this is down to personal preference.
  5. Ah that makes sense, would help see how everything is going to size up against everything else I guess.
  6. Thanks for the advice - I have a starting point now Still open to extra advice though of course!
  7. I've never designed a website in photoshop, but I have a little bit of experience with the software... I'm looking for some helpful tips into designing my main page.. *I'm not looking into creating a photoshop template, I just want to get a feel for my designs* How big should the canvas I'm working on be etc? ANY help is appreciated as I'm still new to all this and eager to learn more Thanks Edit: due to tired typing
  8. That's great, thanks
  9. How would I go about implementing an option for users to increase/ decrease the text size on a web page for accessibility reasons?
  10. Thanks The little demon thing is from a stock image site, thought it would give the design a bit of character
  11. Anyone else got any ideas on colour? I'm really not sure, I've changed the body text to black and it looks better imo...
  12. I also agree that design 2 is the nicest. Love the navigation bar in the 3rd also!
  13. I like the second two, maybe the last one is my favourite - look like steering wheels . The first one doesn't look right to me not sure why . The text doesn't look in the dead centre of the circles on the last ones?
  14. I'll take a look at colour lovers and try and sort something out, I know what you mean about the 'best viewed in' thing. Cheers for the advice everyone!
  15. Thanks Gordon - I've still got a lot to learn and that's a great help. You're right about the whole code needing to be tidy Any suggestions on a bit of colour to compliment it all?
  16. Ok so hoping it's not too bad in comparison with some I have seen on here, because standard seems to be very high on this forum Known issues: - Coding is... well just don't look at it or your eyes will bleed - It's on my to-do list - Needs more colour - any suggestions? I like subtlety - Internet Explorer doesn't like the adverts - Hm? Demon CSS Thanks for looking
  17. Clearing floated divs Seems you can just use overflow: auto in most cases, according to that link?
  18. The path was also wrong in addition to the dodgy element bocaj. Ok so it's displaying now, but it doesn't want to position how I tell it to... .background { background-image: url(../images/test.jpg); background-position: bottom right; background-repeat: no-repeat; height: 110px; width: 111px; position: relative; visibility: visible; top: 0px; left: 0px; } Gah
  19. It still doesn't like it I put and still nothing. Checked the URL and it's valid etc, and I can't see anything else that would be stopping it from showing. EDIT: Never mind got it to work.. seemed to be the element background-attachment: fixed; that was stopping it from displaying... Thanks guys
  20. I want a little image in the bottom right corner of a div. I've tried .backgroundimage { background-attachment: fixed; background-image: url(images/test.jpg); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position:bottom right; height: 110px; width: 101px; position:relative; top: 0px; visibility: visible; left: 0px; } and put <div class="backgroundimage"></div> It creates the space for the image, but won't display it. What's going wrong? Thanks, James.
  21. Quite interesting to see how different people layout their CSS
  22. Dub James posted a topic in Website Hosting
Does anyone have any experience with one.com's web hosting? It's only a small website I want to host, the 3000mb will be plenty. As it's my first I'll be actually hosting, I just want to see if anyone has any opinions on the service etc. Thanks ! James.
  23. That's great information, thanks for the concise explanation Gareth In terms of capitalizing your comments, does that adhere to strict XHTML validation? I have only used one CSS file for my markup up until now, with all elements placed in that one file. Multiple CSS files for different parts of the web page definitely looks like a better way of doing it! Thanks all, great help
