its currently a freewebs site until i get it finished and up and running

*please note there isnt many links to many other pages as im still in the process of making thm*

*and if u find urself on a blank page theres not an error its just that im still trying to make evrything*

so far this has been pretty easy to make and i kno it doesnt look very professional and its a triples site

this is the best i can do at the moment as i dont know how to use flash or css

please tell me wht u think and how i can make it look better or more professional

I am really sorry but I don't like it .

 

The images are good for the theme you are using them for but I really suggest you take on some css learning. You can create a much better look than using tables. CSS really isn't very difficult and there are lots of resources.

 

HTML dog is the bees' knees!

I can see where you are heading with your design, and I like the concept. It is however a little fussy and needs a little bit of simplification.

I would maybe lose the rose and/or lace backgrounds. Too many elements detract a users attention. (My eyes felt like I was watching tennis and were darting all over the page)

this actually my second attempt and a hell of alot better to the 1st 1 lol if u think u were watching a tennis match with this thn u realli dont want to see the 1st 1 lol

atm im no good a css and if i was id prob try and fix it and make it better tht way but ive tried using it and my brain just doesnt want to soak up wht its being told its a bit of a lost cause.

i dont think i want it to look realli sharp and professional im just concertrating on these style of pages atm as tht wht i kno and thts also wht i hope to sell, but i wud love to have something tht looked a little more put together and thought out realli as im just starting i dont kno everything and ppl like u who have been making sites or pages for alot longer kno wht ur doing and how to get the look u want

i made the site in dreamweaver so i set up the tables in the design view but i coded just about everything else like the pics and the dividers and tht

ive tried several other tutorials and my puney little brain cant seem to understand wht its all about

If u like I'll type-up a really simple html and css file so u can see an example of a basic css layout. I'll do it either tonight or tomoro and pm it 2 u.

Even if you find it hard to learn css, having the attitude that you're to dumb to learn is a very bad way to think. You'll never accomplish anything like that. Effort and hard work is how you learn, not your IQ level.

Pink, ( i like the name btw reminds me of my fav singer) I know exactly where you are coming from. I was the same when I started but like everything that is new, it takes longer when you are new. Now, about three months down the line (newish mum with lots of other things going on so prob if you don't have that one month max) I can put a simple site together much much quicker (a day or two).

 

I have offered a little help; it is entirely up to you.

did u do the graphics yourself or did they come from a source? if so what program did u use or what was the source?

im quite interested in your brand, Vintage Elegance... i am thinking jesus can this person really think this will attract people, then i thought hang on think about all of the florists, etc who who want sites, this person may have spotted a gap i the market.

thank u for actually being interested in something for once some1 out side of the target audience has found something good to comment about.

vintage elegance.. . yep im not 100% sure it will attract a huge flo of ppl but i know it will attract people, mainly people that like the same things as i do. i kno ppl that like the vintage style and the other aspects. i am a member of another crafting forum and a few of the ladys on there have actually brought stuff from me so i do have an audience.

And plus my stuff is sorta out of the ordanary its not every day tht u see vintage style webpages, i meen u can go almost newhere for a professional css webpage/site but something like mine is a little harder to find!!

Ok, you put a week of good work into the site, and its better than the one you did last time. That's making progress. I'm sure all the talented designers on this forum have put countless hours and nights over years to get where they are today.

yea i am trying realli hard and its hard to not be put down when ppl are basically saying tht wht uve done isnt very good or tht they dont like it, i suppose some ppl just find it hard to take bad critiscium aka me lol

Just to add to your woes (just to help make you aware) - there are many spelling mistakes in the text - don't forget to check the text as you might get the design all good and then be let down by silly little things you didn't notice!

Your big title image, is almost 2MB in filesize... it is a png file... try saving it as a JPG.. this will reduce quality a bit but it will greatly reduce loading time.

hi thanks ill try tht i didnt realise it was a big file size the only reason i saved it as a png was because its the better quality and there are lots of faded edges and so it looks better as a png well thts just in my opinion

oh man... You're going to have to lose the transparency with the JPG... So add the pink background to that image before you save it as a jpeg.

I don't mean to be ruder still but, I kinda threw up in my mouth looking at the design, and the codes given me salmonella.

 

 

And to the colour-blind nunty above who hasn't calibrated his monitor(s), the background isn't pink it has a texture to it!

Ok I'm not going to comment on the design or coding as that has been done already

 

I just wanted to give you one bit of advice and one thing to think about

 

 

 

Advice:

Not everyone will like your work, to do any form of design you need to develop a thick skin and fast. You said yourself that from the first site to this site you have improved, so version 3 should be better again, as you are learning new skills and developing all the time . What you should do is take what people have said and use it to your advantage, look at how they say you can improve and take from it what you agree with, and use that to make your site better. My reason for saying that is what has been said here isn't that bad, my designs have been pulled apart, people tell me I am a crap designer, that I am a bad web designer and loads of things like that, but I never listen to all of that, just listen to the people who are being constructive and giving you advice, and not the people who just tell you that it is crap...yes they may think it is a terrible design, but they are entitled to that opinion, yet if you keep listening to these people and not those trying to help you then you will get nowhere.

 

 

 

Thing to think about:

So you want to be a web designer? then why do you not want to make a website? Coding is the very basic thing a web designer needs to know, at the very least HTML and CSS. As lets face it a website is just made up of code, without it you wouldn't have a website. So if it is something that you are interested be it as a hobby or as a possible job, why don't you actually want to learn how to do it?

I completely agree with Dizi (hold up is that allowed?) , everyone needs to know you will make site upon site upon site, your own website will soon be **** whilst your making good stuff for clients, and then you will look at your own site and think, "Christ was I on crack when I designed that?" And recode it, that's why a web designer tends to recode their website at least twice per year.

 

Also don't forget that your own website is a showcase for YOUR SKILLS (hence why a designer updates their sites alot)

Ok, I'll say something that hasn't been mentioned already seeing as people have pretty much pointed out where your technical faults are.

 

It's your content. I had to scroll down more than half a page just to find out what it was you were selling. Even then I had to look twice because the design of the site and the product you sell go together like marmite and custard. My personal views on your products not withstanding (I think those Reborn babies are the creepiest thing known to man) I can't see who would want to buy from you... you might sell the odd logo or eBay shop template to a like-minded person but this is by no means a business.

 

Your site and business idea is certainly unique... but I don't think that's a benefit in this case. The reason i don't think it's really been done before is because no one really wants it.

and then u need to actually have the confidence to say yea u kno ill let ppl pull apart one of the best pieces of work tht i have done.

i have no other knowladge other thn html and the code for the pictures its the best way i find of adding thm it may not be wht u use.

First up - ignore minutedesigns he/she's a blight on the forum.

Just take as much of the advice as you can and just try your best to learn from it - just remember the vast majority of us here have spent some time looking through the site and trying to help - we wouldn't if we didn't care! It's always hard to take criticism but it's constructive and there's great advice here that you'll really benefit from. And it's criticism of the site and of designing not you as a person!

Everyone started somewhere and everyone has had their work dissected and weaknesses exposed - painful it might be, but it's the quickest and best way to learn!

Keep going with it and don't be afraid to ask for help and opinions - the guys here are knowledgeable and give advice freely.

First of all, welcome pink-punk, to the exciting and ever-frustrating world of web design!

 

Learning CSS would be a benefit, but to be honest, CSS is nothing more than paint. HTML is the carving of the wood and the way the wood's stuck together. I'm not disagreeing with the others on this site, but I think you're better off ignoring CSS for a little while and concentrating on HTML. When you understand the tags (<table>, <div>, <p> etc...) you can start playing around with all the useful and down-right bizzare ways you can paint them.

 

So, on that note, I'm going to offer you two pieces of advice that I think you may benefit from:

 

Files on the internet don't like spaces... and they tend to get twitchy with capital letters. You might find it a bit easier to name your web pages in lower case and use underscores, so "Contact Me" and "People who use my designs" would become "contact_me" and "people_who_use_my_designs" (or maybe "clients")

 

Secondly, you've got 3 tables before you get to any content, and I really don't think they're necessary. I think that if you get rid of your background of roses, the pinkish box and the wallpaper-like background as well, and make your remaining table stretch to the whole page (width="100%") your site will look better. The contents in the middle (everything from your banner down to ~Becky~) is all that potential customers would be interested in, so should be all that's on the page in my opinion.

 

You've actually got a very good first site there. The background for the main text isn't offensive in any way, or so striking that it makes reading hard. I like the style you've got -- you've got the makings of a pretty tallented graphic designer

Its what you expect when you get peopl to review your site. Its not nice, but you didn't put a site up expecting to get just praise?

 

You have a lot to learn, but thats what happens when your new to something.

 

Trends change all the time, and its best to try and keep up with them, learn about them and keep up to date. Then adopt it to your own style. Thats what its all about, keeping fresh and different.

 

You'll have to have a thick skin and accept what people, what if you make a website for a client and they dont like it? or think its not very nice, they'll tell you. Take it on the chin, go back and make something they want.

 

It just seems like your not quite prepared to take web design on. You cant just make a website and call yourself a designer, you'll get shoot down and trampled on.

 

I hate sounding harsh, but its the truth. Im far from a pro, but I think im good at what I do and it took some damn hard work and a long time. People put up any old stuff and call themselves pro, i dont do this for the money, i do it because I enjoy it. I love learning new ways of doing things.

 

Learn CSS and xhtml and you'll be a fraction of the way there..

I like your passion, you have the drive to learn. It'll take you a while, but you'll get it. And its nice to see someone turning to webdesign and admitting they cant do it, but want to learn.

 

I just hate when people say they're pro, set up a website, and then hget upset because of no clients. Or people that get a website together and call themselves pro.

 

You have great passion, and determined to prove people wrong...But dont get so defensive with people, they're only trying to help.
