Hi I have a large e-commerce client with 2 dedicated Apache servers. I am looking for recommendations for a very experienced freelance server tech / comany. DO not recommend your self. Please post in the thread, why you recommend them, and broadly speaking what tasks they have done for you Tasks: Initially: to advise on a "what hardware/infrastructure/setup" basis Secondly: to do any implementation / server moves Thirdly: good long term support & development (will need to be avail in and out of office hours) Outline: The server tech will need to know how to load balance Apache servers, manage a large MySql database, deal with maintenance and backups, and be intelligent with the suggestions. They will need to understand data-flow, and the like. Even better would be someone who is a PHP expert too, especially someone who can understand real time syncing. The real-time sync application may need re-writing. A total understanding of server security, compliance, firewalls and the like is essential. Current set up: 2 Apache servers running mySQL, syncing (2 way real time) to a offline SQL database server in a B&M retail operation I am not looking for a developer who does server I am looking for a server tech, that can also do PHP development East midlands preferable, but not essential, as this will for sure be a face to face relationship at times

I am a professional photographer & web designer, and I have several solutions for this: Free: Gallery 2/3 (google it) It will do most of what you want, and you can "embed it" Not free: http://www.stockboxphoto.com/ - this does all you want and more The issue with all of these big scripts is you need to be able to deal with the templating, and that requires a fairy high skill level. Every things possible. If you dont have the skill, it will cost you I personally use gallery2, with zencart. I mainly shoot weddings, and there is a desktop facility (gallery remote) that allows me to upload 1000's images using drag and drop

Why not post a sticky with what are reasonable industry rates for regular jobs as a guideline (or include it on the existing guidelines sticky) I.e. (plucking figures out of the air) £600 - £1000 for a 10 page static site £800 - 1200 for a moderatly designed and speced "mini CMS site e.g. wordpress) £2000 - £3500 for a Full on CMS site £2000 - 5000 for a E-commerce site £5K -10K for ecommerce integrated wiuth a CMS £60 minimum value of any order £80 - 150 per day for a day rate etc If it helps, we could have a poll for the comon jobs (pricing) and we could uyse the results of that as a guide

If you are used to Joomla, look at Virtuemart. Do watch out - it has limits that are had to het arround, pay attention to postage and payment gateways, and you will need to now if you are offering bundles or grouped products (another limitation) Magento is pretty easy when you get your head into it

That is the sensible fine line However it is open to a lot of abuse to use an example from the wedding photography industry... If you went on a wedding phootgraphy lighting course, where they supplied professional models, makup artists, and a shed full of expensive lighting gear. Then spent 1/2 hour setting it up, and then you took a photo.. would it be right or wrong to use it in the portfolio - I say wrong because there was a lot of input from the team around you, which doesnt repersent what you could do in 20 seconds on the day Same applies to webdesign.. If you colaborated on a site, it would be quite easy to miss the bit where you had nothing to do with the PHP or JS that actually makes it work (as an example)

Its just a tool, however i see photoshop/dreamweaver/fireworks/light-room all part of the same system (CS5). Once you learn to use all of them together, you soon figure some packages are better than others for different tasks Like the poster above, my starting point often isnt a PSD, but a blank sheet of paper, followed by a hand coded DIV layout, followed by the constituent GFX

I would recommend Magento.. mainly because of the ability to bundle products, and its superb atribute system. If you want a quick run through, drop me a pM, I will walk you through a front and back end etc.
